Chapter 1: RSVP

Chapter Text

It was a normal afternoon for Carson, planning out her coaching for the weekend of softball games ahead. Since marrying Charlie her days consisted of working a half day shift at the local bookstore, getting home around two to do whatever laundry she needed to do and then prepping dinner for when Charlie arrived home from work, but her weekends belonged to the local girls' softball team, The Saints. Carson wasn't sure on the name as it didn't really have any healthy aggression to it when shouting, unlike The Peaches, but it was a church team so she couldn't really argue for a name change.

The Peaches were Carson’s old college softball team back in 2011.

“Shit” Carson said snapping out of her daydreaming.

“What is it?” Charlie frowned while trying to swallow the remaining of the food he had just shoved in his mouth.

“I forgot to RSVP to the reunion!”

“Oh, I didn't think we were going to that. When it arrived, you said you couldn't think of anything worse.”

“Well, I changed my mind.” Carson shrugged.

“Do you think they’ll still have our photos up?”

“Don't you mean your photos Charlie; you know I avoided every camera possible at college.”

“I'm sure they’ll have a sneaky one of you somewhere.” Charlie smirked.

“Meanwhile your face will be slapped all over the walls of the reunion.”

“Well Cars, I can't help it if I was a star football player” Charlie winked as he approached Carson.

“Oh, how lucky I am to have you as my husband.” Carson joked.

“I always knew I'd marry you Carson, you were the one.” Charlie smiled.

“Charlie during college, you had about fifteen different girlfriends.” Carson rolled her eyes.

“Well yes, but Carson you were and are my best friend, you just, well...”

“Spit it out Charlie.”

“Well, you were kind of a nerd and kept yourself to yourself, you came to like three parties the whole of college.”

“Four.” Carson stated. “And I wasn't a nerd, I played softball. I was captain and we won the championships every year until I graduated, graduated at the highest level i must add.”

“Agreed, you're the smartest person I know, and I love you but the fact you were the captain of the softball team and there isn't one photo of you is enough for my case to be won.” Charlie laughed.

“Anyway, I've RSVP’d. It's on Saturday.”

“This Saturday? I have a massive client at work, I might have to meet you there.”

“That's fine, just don't leave me stranded for too long, I need everyone to know I married the king of Rockford.” Carson smirked.

“You best get polishing my crown” Charlie winked as he chased Carson down the hallway.

Saturday had arrived and Carson had just got in after coaching The Saints, she hadn't looked forward for an outing in so long but she couldn't wait to meet up with old friends, especially Shirley who had been travelling the world as a natural health guru, her and Carson had exchanged a few Instagram Dm’s about the reunion and May, who had opened her own beauty salon the last time they spoke.

As Carson stepped out the shower her phone started to buzz over and over, message after message. It was Shirley.

“Carson Shaw, you'll never guess who's just this minute RSVP’d to the reunion?”
"Carson!! are you there?"

“I'm here, Max? But aren't they out of the country right now...I don't know. TELL ME.”

“Gorgeous Gill. Greta fucking Gill Carse.”

Carson froze, she had forgotten her. How did she forget her. Greta Gill was the it girls of all its girls at Rockford. Tall, red hair to match her red lips. Carson had never thought about a woman as much as she did Greta during college. She didn't really know what those thoughts were, jealousy? Envy? Admiration? Lust? She thought them all and now she was going to be back in the room with her, thirteen years later.

“Carson are you there. Have you fainted? I wouldn't blame you; you crushed on Gill hard.”

“I did not have a CRUSH on her, I admired her.” Carson lied.

“Sure Shaw. Do you think she’s still the definition of beauty or? Anyway, we shall find out later, I'm just about to have a mud facial. See you later, don't be late.”

“See you later.”

Carson didn't know what to do, this changed everything, and she was beginning to think maybe she should have left the reunion well alone.
