Chapter Text

Vash felt like he was about to vibrate through the floor, But not in a bad way he just couldn’t help how excited he was to be able to tell his husband the news.

That's right, the news! He Vash the stampede -Actually his last name was Saverem but only Nick, the insurance girls and some of ship 3 knew that- was pregnant!

Finally seeing the small house both he and Nick share, Vash wasted no time in throwing the door open and yelling “Nick!”

A thump and curse from the other room followed Nicholas running into the room, small pistol in hand at the ready. Seeing there was no danger, only an overly excited plant who was borderline glowing in excitement Nick sighed, placing the gun on the coffee table “Jesus spikey you nearly gave me a heart attack.”

Practically skipping towards his husband, Vash wrapped his arms around the man's neck. Cheeks aching with how large his smile got when he felt large hands rest on his waist. “Sorry but I have good news, Great news even!”

Nick lifted one brow “I thought you were going to ship 3 for a check up cuz you weren’t feeling well.”

“Well you're not wrong.” Admitted the former blonde “But it’s for a good reason. I Swear!”

With a sigh the priest poked his husband “Well? What's this supposed good news?”

Excitement back full force the former blonde practically vibrated in his arms. “So as you know I went to ship 3 cuz I’ve been super tired and a little nauseous and more achy recently?” Nicholas nodded “Well turns out I am not dying!”

“Okay that is good news but that don tell me why you're all excited.”

Vash huffed, leaning forward to rest his forehead against his husband's. Plant lines glowing softly at the contact, “You going to be a father.”

The former blonde counted the seconds as his words slowly sunk in. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 - “W-what?”

Grabbing one of the hands on his waist Vash placed it onto his stomach telling the shocked man “I’m pregnant, You're going to be a father.”

Hazel eyes were wide in shock, snapping to the still flat stomach “You're pregnant. There's a baby in there.”

Vash’s smile softened, pressing a kiss to his cheek. The plant nodded “Yes, Dr. Lea confirmed it today.”

A blinding smile was all Vash saw as he was lifted and spun. Nick laughing as he hugged him tight. Vash laughed with him until the dizziness had him calling “Wait! Stop put me down, I'm gonna puke if you keep doing that.”

As soon as the words left his mouth Wolfwood set him down peppering his face with kisses whispering “Thank you,” between each one. Pulling back slightly, Wolfwood placed one last kiss to Vash’s lips “We’re having a baby! God I love you so much Vash.”

Seeing the excitement that his husband had, Vash immediately knew that he was correct in thinking that everything would be fine and that Nick would have no problem in having a child with him. Soft hands fell to frame his stomach as Nick sank to his knees whispering to the little life nestled there. Tears burned at blue eyes as his sensitive hearing picked up what his husband was saying.

“I love you so much little one, You're never gonna doubt that me and your daddy love you. We’ll make sure you never want for anything.” Vash threaded his flesh hand through Wolfwood's soft hair, petting it back from his eyes as the man continued.

The tender moment was broken a few minutes later by the former blond's stomach growling loudly. Smiling sheepishly prosthetic rubbing the back of his head Vash admitted “I guess that snack on ship 3 didn’t do much.”

With a chuckle Wolfwood stood back up shaking his head as he pulled Vash into the kitchen by his hand “Whatch ya want to eat angel?”

“Hmm do we still have thoma jerky and that sour berry jam?”

+++++++

A light shaking roused the former blonde “Come on Vash time to get up.”

Vash whined, turning away from the hand on his shoulder and burrowing further into the pillows and blanket.

“Come on blondie, I have a cup of coffee waiting for you.” Bargained Nicholas “We have to leave for ship 3 soon, gotta make it there before noon for your check up.”

Another whine but this time Vash rolled over pressing his face into Nicolas’s side, his one arm wrapping around the man's waist. “Tired,” mumbled the plant.

Nicholas hummed, rubbing his husbands back “I know, You can have a nap later but for now it's time to get up.”

Slowly Vash dragged his tired body up, Rubbing his eyes with his flesh hand. “M up.”

Pressing a quick kiss to the sleepy man's forehead Nicolas told him “Good job now let's get dressed, eat and then head out.”

“Kay.”

Once up Vash slowly got ready, eyeing his prosthetic sitting on the bedside table before deciding to forego it for the now. Sluggishly making his way to the kitchen and dropping himself into a chair, Vash let his head fall onto the table biting back a groan when his head pulsed dully with pain.

Glancing over to where the former blond was seated Wolfwood couldn't help the small bout of worry at the man's behavior. Chalking it up to being just under 3 months pregnant and all the pains that went with it Wolfwood brought over a small plate of thoma eggs and toast.

Turning his head to look at the plate set next to him, Vash bit back a gag skin palling as he told Wolfwood through gritted teeth, “I don't think I can handle the eggs right now.”

Nodding Wolfwood took the plate, giving it back a moment later with only the toast still on it. “That okay?”

Pushing back the slight nausea at the sight of the food Vash nodded, Sitting back up as he started nibbling on the bread. Satisfied that his husband was at least eating something Wolfwood tucked into his own breakfast trying to appear as noclant as possible when Vash set his half eaten breakfast back on the plate. Leaning back in his seat as he took a deep breath and holding it, -skin earning a slight green palor- before releasing it in a rush, getting up and darting to the bathroom.

‘At least he had something,’ Thought Wolfwood as he quickly packed up the toast, filled a glass with water and went to take care of his husband.

Finding Vash crouched over the toilet always had him biting back a grimace. It was highly unusual to see Vash this sick -Even when hungover- grabbing a cloth and wetting it with cold water Nick placed it on the back of vash’s neck, sitting behind him and rubbing his back as the former blond emptied the contents of his stomach.

What felt like hours -but was only minutes- Vash leaned back into Nick's arms breathing heavily as he willed his stomach to settle.”God how do people do this more than once.” whined the plant voice horse as he accepted the glass of water Nick had prepped.

“Not a clue angel. Seems rough.” Pressing a kiss onto his sweaty forehead once he noticed the glass of water was empty Nick asked “Think you’re good to go?”

Vash nodded and with a little help stood up leaving the bathroom to go get ready to leave.

The jerk of the motorcycle hitting solid metal instead of soft sand had Vash jerking awake, Blearily noticing that they had made it to ship 3 the former blonde wondered when he fell asleep. Unwrapping his arm, from around Nick’s waist Vash leaned back giving himself a small shake before getting off the bike.

Giving a smile to Brad and Luida who were standing at the entrance to the loading bay.

“Vash, Wolfwood it’s good to see you again.” Called Luida as the two walked toward them.

“Luida, it's good to see you too.” The plant smiled, giving a quick hug to the small woman, Giving a small nod to Brad.

“Hey kid, Nicholas.” Greeted the man “How was the drive?”

“Not bad, Blondie knocked out pretty quickly so it was quiet.” Admitted the priest.

Greetings given the four made their way inside the ship, Brad and wolfwood hanging back from the mother son duo, as they caught up.

Stopping at the door to the infirmary “Dr. Lea should be waiting for you, we'll talk later?”

“Sounds like a plan.”

+++++

“Hello Vash NIce to see you again,” Greeted Dr Lea “You must be Nicolas D, Wolfwood.”

The doctor held her hand out to the priest who took it with a smile greeting her back, “I am, Nice to meet you.”

Pleasantries out of the way the appointment started, weight taken and blood drawn among many other things that were done until finally the three settled down for the ultrasound. Lying on the bed with his shirt lifted had Vash feeling a little silly. Fighting back a flinch when the cool gel hit his skin.

“Sorry, I know it’s cold. It’ll warm up in a minute here. “ Informed Dr Lea, while she turned on the machine.

The two expectant parents looked at the screen intently as she dragged the wand across his belly. The grey scale image made next to no sense to them as it dragged by until “Ahh here we go.” Freezing the screen the doctor pointed everything out.

Tears burned at Nicks eyes as he watched the screen. That was a baby, that was his kid! Oh god he was going to be a father. Fear and excitement warred against each other. A hand grabbing his, Had Nick looking at his husband who was smiling bright with tears glittering in his blue, blue eyes.

Dr. Lea quickly printed off the ultrasound giving it to the two before leaving to gather Vash’s test results giving the two some privacy.

“Why are you crying Spikey?” sniffed Nick,

“Me? What about you.” laughed the former blond, whipping his eyes Vash looked at the picture he was handed adoration heavy in his voice, “This is really real.”

“Looks like it,”

“You’re going to be such a good father.”

Pressing a kiss to the plants forehead Wolfwood told him “You’re going to be too Vash.”

Before they could say anything else Dr. Lea walked back in the room chart in hand. “So I am a little worried about some of Vash’s readings, So I am going to ask if you two can stay here at Ship 3 for a bit just so I can monitor you? This is nothing to panic about. I just want to be a bit cautious since we know next to nothing about independent pregnancies.”

Vash looked to Nick who nodded “We can do that, We’ll just message Ms. Melanie to let her know we won’t be around for a little bit.”

That decided they made a plan for the next appointment before relocating to Vash’s room for the nap that he was promised earlier.

Flopping onto the bed Vash groaned as he sunk into it. The plush mattress helped soothe his sore muscles. Nick set their bags in the small closet glancing over his shoulder at his husband lying blissfully on the bed.

“Nick” Vash was staring straight at the man, making grabby hands in the air. “Come nap with me.”

“I have to go radio the orphanage, tell Ms. Melanie we won't be coming by for a bit.”

“Please,” Pleaded the man face doing the thing meryl affectionately called the “sad puppy look”

Shaking his head fondly, Wolfwood crawled in next to his husband. “Fine, but only till you fall asleep.”

Vash gave a happy wiggle cuddling close to his husband.

A sharp pain in his stomach had Vash blinking awake. Biting back a groan -not wanting to wake his husband- Vash rode out the wave. While it wasn’t unusual for Vash to be in pain or even be woken up by it. Something about this felt off.

Slowly dragging himself out of the warm comfortable bed Vash walked into the bathroom waiting until the door was closed before turning the light on. Eyes snapping shut as the harsh lighting assaulted his sensitive sight. Vash stumbled to the sink turning the tap on to cold as he filled a glass.

Slowly opening his eyes as he became used to the harsh lighting. Refilling the small glass a flash of red from the corner of his vision had him glancing at the mirror behind the door.

Shaking Vash set the glass back on the sink, the large red stain on his pants couldn’t be good.

“Nick” Voice barely audible as he choked back his panic. Setting a shaking hand on his small stomach as another cramp of pain started to build, He cleared his throat trying again “Nicholas!” he called.

“Vash?” The priest called back sleepily, footsteps coming to the bathroom “What's wron- shit.”

Taking in the scene before him, his husband half bent over the sink in pain, arm clutching the metal almost hard enough to dent it. Blood covered his pants. Nicholas burst into action slapping the emergency button on the wall beside the door as he went to help his husband.

A sob burst from Vash as the tears began to fall “I'm sorry.”

“What? No no no you don't have to be sorry, not for this okay angel.” Soothed wolfwood. Helping remove Vash's pajama pants and guided his husband sit on the toilet quickly grabbing fresh clothes for him as they waited for medical staff.

Not knowing what else to do Wolfwood curled his arms around Vash’s shoulders in a loose hug petting the back of his hair as he comforted the shaking plant.

Soft sobs were buried into the worn cotton of his shirt as Vash leaned forward, flinching at every cramp of his abdomen. What felt like hours -but was only minutes- until infirmary staff were knocking at the door.

Pulling back from his husband, heart breaking at the distraught whine leaving him Wolfwood pressed a kiss to his forehead telling him. “I'll be right back angel. I have to let them in.”

Vash nodded, wiping his eyes as he tried to compose himself for whoever was on duty that night. As quickly as he could Nicholas ran to the door informing the nurse on the other side what he knew as he took them to where Vash was waiting.

Rushing to her patient the nurse quickly took stock, asking a few questions before digging through her bag and giving the former blonde a pill.

“This should help stop anything from continuing if we’re not too late.” She informed her distressed patient.

Vash nodded quickly, taking the pill and washing it down with the water his husband offered.

++++++++

Vash laid on the bed in the infirmary practically numb to the world. Wolfwood sitting next to the bed, hand holding Vash’s remaining one.

Gone , Their baby was gone. The little bundle of joy they had only known about for just over 3 months had disappeared.

“I’m sorry.” The first word Vash had spoken in the hours since they had discovered what happened. Weighed down with grief and anguish. “I'm so sorry Nick.”

Blue eyes were dull as tears fell clumping thick lashes together. “So sorry.” He cried.

Nick took a deep breath pushing back his heart break to deal with later. Placing a gentle hand on his husbands shoulder rubbing in soothing circles. “Its okay,” He breathed. “You did nothing wrong. These things happen, there was nothing you could have done differently.”

Vash shook his head sobs heaving out of his sore broken body. The devastating night finally hitting him hard as he curled into himself. Standing up Nicholas crawled into the bed gathering his husband into his arms as the man cried out his heart break. Pressing a soft kiss to his hair Nick told him “It’s okay angel, It wasn’t your fault.”

Nicholas didn't know how much time had passed until Vash cried himself to sleep. Soft hitching breaths following him into an uneasy slumber. Smoothing a hand down the scarred back Nick couldn’t help the few tears of his own that fell. Mourning the little life they had both lost.

The soft hiss of the door opening has the priest glancing over to the door seeing Ludia and Brad file in with somber expressions. Not moving away from his husband Nick watched as Ludia settled into the same chair he had sat in. Brad standing next to her.

“How is he doing?”

Nick shook his head, “Not good. We lost the baby.”

Brad expected as much but it still hurt to hear, “And how are you doing Nicholas?” Ludia spoke.

“Not good but I’ll be okay.”

The black haired woman nodded, leaning forward to pull a blanket up over the duo’s shoulders, “Let us know if any of you need anything okay?” She instructed “Either of you, Your just as much family as Vash is Nicholas.”

Giving the old couple a small smile Nick thanked them.
