Work Text:
Barry breathed heavily through the cramped cubicle while his best friend Patty waited for him outside, pounding the floor with her slipper as restless as the blonde.
"Have you given the result yet?" the woman asked for the fifth time after knocking on the bathroom door.
"Not yet," he replies nervously. "Do you think it was a false alarm?"
The beta sighs and shrugs.
"It could be," he murmurs.
They both fall silent until Patty opens her eyes, surprised when she hears Barry open the door and sees him walk out with a neutral expression on his face.
The girl looks at him for an answer and the blond simply sighs and shows her the proof he holds in his hand.
Patty immediately grabs it and gasps when she sees the two red lines indicating that his best friend is pregnant.
"Are you...?"
"So it seems," he whispers, visibly stunned by the news.
The blonde hugs him effusively while his best friend stares into nothingness trying to figure out what he should do or say.
"Are you okay?" Patty asks, seeing the boy's obvious lack of response.
The blond man breathes heavily and shakes his head as he leans against the sink a few steps away from him. Patty watches him frightened, ready to act if necessary.
"I'm not," he replies, confused. “I don't know how to tell Hal... This.”
"I thought Hal wanted to have kids."
“He wants to," he clarifies immediately, sighing and rubbing the back of his neck nervously. “But we had agreed to wait a little longer... We haven't even been married for a year yet and this is definitely out of our agreement.”
"Barry," the beta murmurs, reaching over to hug him protectively. “I don't think Hal got mad about this, it's just things that happen and I think he'll understand.”
He blondes in fright, but affirms trying to reassure his friend, who seems genuinely interested in his situation
"Do you think I should talk to him tonight?"
"That would be the best," says the girl. “How much do you think you have?”
He blondes, blushes and shrugs his shoulders in embarrassment at the thought of the answer.
"Maybe two months or less," he whispers shyly to which Patty affirms and continues to caress his back trying to calm him down.
The Omega sighs heavily and leans his head against his best friend's shoulder trying to figure out what her next move should be.
He hopes that Hal will really take the news of her pregnancy well and that this event will not affect her recent marriage.
He was too in love with the alpha and if Hal didn't support him in this, it would break her heart to have to divorce him.
***
Hal sighs wearily until he manages to open the door of his house, only advancing a couple of meters when the smell of freshly poured Bolognese pasta reaches his nostrils like a blow.
A smile quickly spreads on the alpha's face, who does not hesitate to take off his jacket and leave it on the couch along with his briefcase and tie.
He carefully advances through the house, trying to make as little noise as possible so as not to be noticed by his partner, that's when he arrives at the kitchen and the air gets stuck in his lungs.
His heart beats when he sees his husband standing in the kitchen, his back to him as he moves around the small island in the center, finishing serving the dinner he had prepared.
Discreetly, Hal walks over to her husband and hugs him from behind.
The omega jumps in fright when he feels Hal's arms encircle his waist protectively and bury his head in his neck, just above his binding mark.
"You smell delicious," whispered the chestnut without straying a little.
Barry melts at the touch, in part, adoring the closeness of his body to his husband's; Remembering all the nights they had ended up making love on the island. But on the other hand, the affirmation of the sweetness of her scent meant only one thing, Barry had to talk to Hal about his pregnancy as soon as possible.
"Go wash your hands," he orders nervously.
Hal snorts at the heaviness of her husband, but decides not to comment on anything, believing it could simply be due to the intimate moment they shared.
So he simply kisses his neck gently and walks away in the direction of the bathroom where he takes him time to lather up and rub his hands.
When he comes out of the bathroom and heads to the dining room, he stumbles upon dinner being served and his own husband sitting across from him with a distressed expression as he plays with his food.
"All right, Bar?"
The blond raises his head quickly and smiles tensely before affirming.
Hal frowns and feels even more restless and confused.
"Are you sure?"
"Absolutely," says the young man, smiling. “How was your day today?”
"Well..." he sighs before shrugging his shoulders and beginning to speak under his husband's watchful eye; however, Hal is smart enough to realize that no matter how much he talked and talked, Barry wasn't paying attention, he seemed too dismayed to pay attention to even his own food; This fact no doubt worries him.
He takes a closer look at his husband who has a sorrowful look on his face and his legs are shaking under the table, just as he did the first time they met and Hal flirted with him.
He has exactly that posture that screams at him that his Omega feels insecure around him and his inner alpha demands that he do something to fix that.
"Honey," he whispers as he reaches out his hand to touch Barry's, who starts to apologize for not paying attention. “What's going on?”
"It's nothing, I think I've just had a very busy day at work and..."
"Bear," he says, caressing his hand gently. “I know you better than I know myself, I know it's not that, what's the matter?”
The blond man lets go of his husband's grip and bows his head in grief.
"I don't know how to start," he explains. “I think it's best for me to show you.”
Hal nodes as he watches Barry shyly get up from the table and walk in the direction of the living room.
The seconds it takes Barry to return are eternal for the alpha who can't help but think the worst.
Maybe Barry had stopped loving him or had found a better alpha.
An Alpha who was smarter, had more money, and could make his wife happier than Hal did.
"Can you close your eyes and stretch out your hands?" Though confused, Hal obeys his Omega's request and closes his eyes as he extends his hands.
He feels Barry hand him a small plastic stick, which makes him feel more confused until he is allowed to open his eyes and understand everything.
"Are you pregnant?"
The man sighs heavily and affirms.
"I'm so sorry," he says, his head still bowed. “I know that we had agreed not to have children until two years after being married in order to have a little more savings and financial stability... But I really thought about this and I want to keep the baby…”
"Barry," he interrupts, brown, staring at him. “It's all right.”
"Aren't you upset?"
"Why should I be?" he asks discreetly as he stands up.
"Because that's not how we had planned.”
Hal laughs and shakes his head.
"Maybe it wasn't the way we had planned," he says, putting his hand around his waist to lure him into a hug, "But it's definitely still good news."
He Omega doesn't retort and enjoys his husband's gesture, feeling relaxed for the first time all day since he knows about his pregnancy.
"Is that why you were worried?"
He blondes and nods his head softly in fear of Hal's response, but Hal simply laughs and delicately kisses his head as he continues to protectively caress his back.
"I'd never be mad at you for something like this, Bar…Even if that's not how we plan things.”
"So, can we keep it?"
"Of course, honey.”
Hal smiles and feels happy when she hears the smell of her husband relaxing again along with his body, and then she can enjoy the rest of her evening daydreaming about the birth of her first child.
