Chapter Text
Chloe heard the machines that were supposed to keep her alive beep away from a distance. With them everything else, pain, weight, the beating of her heart seemed to grow more and more distant. Until it all was gone.
Except for the machines that started beeping even louder, she knew this sound from movies, someone was dying! She went to get a doctor, or a nurse, luckily someone was already running into the direction, she took a step to the side to not slow them down but didn’t fully make it out of the way in time.
The guy went right through her leg just before she could pull it away. Literally. Probably just a trick of light. She went back into the room, she didn’t know where else to go, how had she even gotten here? The doctor didn’t stop her, so it was likely okay. More medical professionals filled the room, so she stayed back, to not disturb them.
It was a wonder that nobody had sent her out of the room so far. She probably should still go. She didn’t belong here. As she made her way to the door, she saw Lucifer standing in the frame.
He stared at her wide eyed.
“Detective- you are-”, he began cheerfully, then towards the bed and ended subdued: “Not fine.”
“What are you talking about Lucifer?”
And why was he here, come to think of it, why was she here?
“Quick detective, go back into your body over there.”
“What?” He really was crazy.
“Don’t ask questions, just trust me detective!”
“I’m not going to disturb them any further”, she hissed. And tried to push him back.
She didn’t feel any resistance.
Because her hand went right through him.
“You see, detective, you are a ghost!”
“A what?”
“A ghost, and if you don’t get back into your body over there, you will never get it back!”
“You are crazy.”
“Trust me.”
Trust him, as if she would trust a wackjob like him! Begrudgingly she made her way to the bed, not because she trusted him, but … but to show him he was wrong. It wasn’t her lying there. She wasn’t a ghost. She ignored the fact that she went through multiple people on her way to the bed.
The she took the last step to the bed and looked at… her long lost twin sister? Had Lucifer played a prank on her? That had to be it.
Despite her doubts she tried to touch the arm of … uhm the really good replica but felt an impenetrable wall around it. That was odd. She tried to touch her somewhere else but failed again.
She took the steps back to Lucifer who looked at her with grief: “It’s to late.”
He just was a great actor; this was a prank. Had to be.
“Great prank Lucifer, how could you even do this, no, hold on, tell me later. Why, did you do this?”
“I didn’t do anything, Detective, I- I have to go.”
Maybe not a prank then. A dream?
She followed Lucifer he was the only person in this dream so far, she recognized. The hospital she knew all to well.
Lucid dreams were usually fun. Maybe she could try to fly? First Lucifer then flying, she decided.
She caught up to him. “This is a dream, right?”
“I wish it was”, he didn’t look at her.
“Of course, it is, I can reach through people!”
“Yes, because you are a ghost. Extremely rare occurrence to last for longer than a few seconds. Azrael must be sleeping on the Job.”
“If anyone’s sleep is responsible for this, its mine, and who are you talking about?”
“My sister, Azrael, the angel of death, she collects souls, to bring them to hell, or heaven- the place where you will undoubtedly go”, he added warmer.
“I don’t believe you.”
He raised an eyebrow: “That is a remarkable amount of denial detective.”
He was a truly annoying fantasy, her brain got him just right: “Alright, I’ll play. How did I die then?”
“You were shot”, he pressed out.
Memories came rushing back. Jimmy Barnes, them confronting him, the pain, Lucifer, red, nothingness.
She shook herself.
“Alright, so I’m in a coma. And dreaming all this.”
“Whatever you choose to believe.”
They had reached the parking lot.
“Goodbye Chloe”, he quickly looked at her before he started walking towards his car.
Chloe didn’t follow him this time.
Ghosts were impossible, right?
Had to be.
She sat down on a small wall, at least she could still do that.
Which didn’t make any sense, if she really was a ghost that could walk through people, why could she sit down on anything? Why was she even able stand on anything?
Further proof, that it was just a comatose dream.
That was when a new feeling set in. It felt as if she was becoming lighter, than a burning headache set in. And her stomach- it felt as if she had gotten drunk, eaten loads of chocolate cake with her daughter and then gone onto a roller-coaster with ten looping’s. She swayed at looked down at herself. She really looked like a ghost now, transcended and a bit blurred.
Bad bad subconscious.
And it got even worse. Small slivers of color left her body. She was falling apart!
What was happening? And why now all of the sudden? What had changed?
She looked over to Lucifer who was still walking away from her. It was the only thing that had changed as far as she knew. But why would she- the throbbing pain in her head convinced her to just go for try and error. She ran after him.
And everything went normal again.
This really was a nightmare.
This parking lot was ridiculously big Lucifer thought. As he made his way towards the car, how many sick people are there even?
Finally, he was at his Corvette. As he opened the door, he was interrupted by the voice of the detective who was shouting for him to stop.
Azrael really was lazy today. He thought and his heart did not at all squeeze together at the thought of the detective being dead. He was going to break Barnes out, and torture him personally until his pain made up for- for all this.
The detective was still running into his direction. He decided to wait. Couldn’t hurt to chat a bit before she would be out of his reach forever.
The detective had caught up to him. And immediately started talking.
“I have to stay near you!”
It took dying for her to want sex with him?
“I was falling apart over there!”
“Well, detective, maybe we can still squeeze some one-on-one time in until Azrael decides to do her job”, Lucifer responded with a suggestive grin.
The detective rolled her eyes: “Why is everything about sex for you- Don’t answer that. I mean literally, my body was all transcended and losing its form when I was over there and everything went back to normal when I followed you.”
“That is odd”, he had never heard of something like that.
“Just don’t drive away, okay? I didn’t like the feeling, at all.” The detective shivered at the thought.
“Well then pop in there”, he gestured towards the car: “I’m not going to stay in a hospital parking lot all day long.”
He opened the door for her, closed it behind her and got into the driver seat himself.
He would never admit just how good it felt, that she was sitting next to him.
