Chapter Text
Gellert Grindelwald sat in his dim, dank cell. Each breath was a bitter reminder of his fall from power, the weight of his failures suffocating him in the oppressive silence that had become his normal existence. The once-imposing figure of the Dark Lord now sagged in tattered robes, his frame gaunt, his once sharp eyes dulled by decades of confinement. His world was reduced to the grim view through a small, magically sealed window which fractured the limited light into mere slivers on the damp stone walls.
As he sat there, he could hear the guards in the hallway outside, their voices carrying echoes of mockery and disdain. They spoke of Voldemort's triumphs, of how the Dark Lord had managed to conquer where Grindelwald had failed. They taunted him, calling him an inferior Dark Lord, a relic of a bygone era. He longed to see the light dim from their eyes, to show them exactly what real power was.
Inside Grindelwald’s mind, a storm raged. Sinister thoughts swirled, fantasies of revenge and domination over those who dared to decry him. He imagined their bodies broken and their bones crushed beneath his wand, a cruel satisfaction of the magic he could unleash on those who would dare contain him. It would not just be Muggles he suppressed, reigning superior over, but anyone who had ever dared to question his right to rule and stood in his way.
Outwardly, he maintained a mask of solemn resignation, playing the defeated and aging wizard they thought him to be. While inwardly, a fierce blaze of defiance and yearning for what should rightfully be his still simmered.
Memories of Albus, his once dear friend and partner, haunted Grindelwald. The aging headmaster used to visit him every year, a small abet taunting beacon of light amidst the dull shadows that consumed his day-to-day existence. He hated him, yet longed for that visit, the only being he could tolerate, even after his betrayal.
Grindelwald felt a pang of sorrow for Albus' loss, a brilliant mind extinguished by the relentless march of time. Fate had not granted him the destiny he deserved, one unblemished by the world's expectations that ultimately led him down the path of betrayal, influenced by a tainted vision of good.
The Dark Lord was shocked to hear rumors that Albus had supposedly fallen victim to something as mundane as trespassing and succumbing to ancient wards. Knowing Albus, he dismissed this as a fabrication. It was inconceivable to Grindelwald that such trivial dangers could defeat the Light Lord, especially given the power of the Elder Wand he wielded.
It had to be this newly resurrected Dark Lord, the one calling himself Voldemort and claiming the title of Lord Slytherin, allegedly seizing control not just of Britain but also the world. Deep down, Grindelwald couldn't muster surprise at the outcome. Albus's Light ideals, once fervently believed, were feeble and inadequate compared to the raw power of the Dark that had proven itself superior. Grindelwald scoffed internally at Albus's notions of love prevailing, it was a joke that only fools could take solace in. Such idealistic notions had no place in a world governed by control and ambition.
Rumors also spread that the one Albus had groomed to be the new leader of Light, the successor to the aging headmaster, had betrayed him and turned to the Dark side. Gellert found it surprising that this young man had pledged complete loyalty to the Dark Lord who had murdered his parents. However, if the rumors were to be believed, this new Dark heir possessed significant potential in dark magic, a potential wasted by Albus's naive ideals and reluctance to fully embrace power.
The thought of his dear friend stirred something within him, something he forced down. It was pointless to waste senseless trivialities hoping for what would never come to pass again. Grindelwald certainly preferred when Albus was alive and visiting, even with his idealistic views, to the forgotten void he now existed within. He would take Albus and his naivety over the incessant chatter of ignorant guards any day. Perhaps fate would someday smile favorably upon him, and he would be granted success in finding the Hallows and could summon him back.
He pushed that thought aside too; he’d been stuck in this castle he’d created for decades. He wasn’t one to give up hope, believing in destiny, but even that thought was beginning to dim after waiting seven years and not receiving a single visitor since Albus’ passing. Was he destined to rot here alone? In his youth, at his height, he’d felt fleeting glimpses of what he always thought were premonitions, a sight inspired. He had always believed he was still destined for greatness. Perhaps he had been wrong and Albus was right all along, that he was guided by delusions, not the gifted inspiration of a future that was meant to come to pass.
A noise snapped him out of his musings. Sharp and distinct, it was unlike the usual sounds of guards changing shifts or the arrival of meals, which were the only breaks in the routine of numbing boredom that usually enveloped him.
Grindelwald's ears perked up at the sudden commotion outside his cell. The usual chatter of the guards gave way to shuffling sounds, followed by raised voices echoing through the stone corridors. There was an unmistakable pulse of power, a surge of magic that made Grindelwald's senses tingle with curiosity and anticipation.
As the shouts subsided, a heavy silence fell over the prison. Grindelwald could feel the tension in the air, a palpable energy that hinted at something significant unfolding just beyond his reach. He cocked his head, listening intently as the echoes of the disturbance faded into nothingness.
Then, like a whisper of fate, footsteps approached his cell. The rhythm of the footsteps was deliberate, purposeful, sending a shiver of anticipation down Grindelwald's spine. Who could it be, interrupting the monotony of his days with such fervor?
The footsteps stopped just outside his cell door, and for a moment, Grindelwald held his breath, waiting for the next development in this unexpected turn of events. A voice, authoritative yet tinged with a hint of curiosity and not a small amount of fear, spoke from the other side of the heavy metal barrier.
"Lord Grindelwald," the voice called out. He did not recognize it.
"Who goes there?" Grindelwald responded, his voice hoarse but laced with intrigue. He rose from his seat, expectancy stirring within him like a dormant flame flickering back to life.
He sensed a wand, a hint of magic against the door blocking him from the life he was meant to live. The cell door creaked open, revealing a figure silhouetted against the dim light of the corridor. He shifted awkwardly under the Dark Lord's gaze. In the dim light of his cell, Grindelwald's eyes narrowed as the figure stepped further into view and dropped his hood.
As the wizard stood before Grindelwald, his features came into sharper focus. His sharp, angular face was framed by a mane of dark, unruly hair that fell in disarray around his shoulders, adding to the air of unpredictability that surrounded him.
The wizard’s eyes, deep-set and piercing, held a glint of determination and intelligence. His high cheekbones and chiseled jawline spoke of a certain aristocratic bearing, despite the raggedness of his current attire. He wore a cloak that was once rich in color but now faded and worn, the symbol of his former status as a wizard of influence.
He dropped, taking a knee before Grindelwald. "Lord Grindelwald," he proclaimed, his voice carrying a mixture of reverence, determination, and most deliciously, fear.
Grindelwald's expression remained unreadable as he regarded the man before him. "And who might you be?" he inquired, though a faint recollection stirred in the depths of his memory.
"I am Igor Karkaroff," the wizard replied, his tone wavering. "Former Headmaster of Durmstrang, a student of the Dark."
Grindelwald's mind raced as he pieced together fragments of information. Igor Karkaroff, a name he’d heard before, a dark practitioner who would have just been coming of age, finishing his studies, when Grindelwald was defeated. Yet here he stood, before the imprisoned Dark Lord, hinting at a newfound purpose and allegiance.
"What brings you here, Karkaroff?" Grindelwald asked curiously. He sensed the hand of fate at play.
Karkaroff raised his head from his bowed stance. "At long last, the Dark reigns, yet it is led by the wrong master. You embody everything a Dark Lord should be. Do you still wish for the vision you once fought for to come to pass, my lord?"
Igor Karkaroff's words hung in the air, carrying with them a weight of significance and intrigue. Grindelwald regarded the former Headmaster, his mind racing with possibilities.
"True freedom and enlightenment shall never be contained," Grindelwald acknowledged, his voice measured. Eagerness coursed through him, that he held at bay. "What makes you believe that I am the one who should be leading?"
Karkaroff's gaze remained steady, a glint of determination shining through. "I have long studied you from afar," he explained, "and I see a strength and sight that far surpasses what our current leader embodies. Our future lies in your hands, Lord Grindelwald. Do you still have the fire within you to seize it?"
Grindelwald's eyes narrowed as he considered Karkaroff's words. The allure of reclaiming his former position of authority and influence tugged at him, a tantalizing prospect amidst the confines of his prison cell. He had been right; fate was not done with him yet. Destiny still called.
"I may have been dormant, but the fire still burns," Grindelwald declared, his voice resonating with purpose. "Take me to those who share our vision, Karkaroff. For the Greater Good, we will rise again."
With a nod from Karkaroff, the cloaked figures behind him stepped forward, their faces hidden in shadows but their allegiance clear. They all dropped to a knee in submission. Grindelwald stepped to the entrance of his cell, the spark of ambition reigniting within him as he prepared to step back into the tumultuous world of magic and power. It was time the world saw what a real Dark Lord could do.
