Work Text:
She is twenty-four, and she is still that wildfire, that star swallowed into a black hole, that seventeen-year-old too selfish and stupid to recognize a different kind of love until it hit her dead in the face in her brother’s arms in the middle of the night. She is twenty-four, and she is thirteen in a car on the side of a road. She is twenty-four, and then, in the dim passage of a day, she is twenty-five.
Breathe, she thinks. Breathe, Nadine, you motherfucker, breathe.
Feet on the stairs. Back to the wall. Five senses, ready to count.
Breathe.
