Work Text:
The first time Red hears it she can't believe anything could sound like that, it was similar to some of the birds that plague Wonderland, seen as pests by the queen for their blasphemous singing.
Singing, she knew what it was, but it was banned, just like many things in Wonderland were that could be described as fun, sometimes Wonderland would shine through that anyone. Allowing a chaotic time that even her mom couldn't stop.
Red continues to sleep as Chloe sings, the sound of rustling paper signifying that she was probably doing her homework or coming up with a strategy for the next Swords and Shield tournament.
Whatever the reason, it was the first time she had heard Chloe sign, since coming to Auradon she'd found that if was... basically a recreational thing to just sing, sing, sing; It was slightly annoying to say the least.
But hearing Chloe do it, stopping to check on Red every now and then, she couldn't keep the affection from blooming into her chest. Like the roses she would so often cut just to peeve off her mom, she knew that it would return within hours.
It always did when it came to the blue haired girl, an affection that she both dreaded and found herself craving.
Chloe didn't hug her much, seeming to want to respect her boundaries, but Red didn't have any when it came to Chloe, everything she did filled her soul with a fondness, the few times she'd slip up and tackle her were scary, mostly because she would jump at her at full speed, and Red... wasn't equipped to catch her.
It often ended with both of them falling to the floor, Chloe wrapping her arms around her with a giggle that made her insides melt like chocolate.
The warmth of her skin against Red's as Chloe pulls her up spinning her around, the taller girl giggling happily at having won a tournament, or sometimes, for Red managing to avoid something that was such an obvious temptation for chaos.
Red couldn't make whatever was blooming in her heart wilt, they weren't like her mother's roses. Her mother controlled where those were places, and Red controlled when it left.
No, this was worse, like the dandelillies her mother would often scowl out, quickly pulling the out with a distaste that screams of her hatred for the wretched things that seemed to bloom everywhere in Wonderland.
Red hears the singing stop and is pulled out of her reminiscing, a hand slowly touching her throat. After a moment, Chloe hums and starts singing sweetly again, hand wandering up to cup her cheek.
Without thinking, she leans into Chloe's touch sleepily reaching her arm out to hold onto the other girl's arm with a soft hum.
The singing stops for a second, Red can hear the taller girl coo before continuing. Breathing out a deep sigh as she tries to lean closer, the bed underneath her seemingly disappearing as she hears Chloe curse hands quickly moving under her.
"Shit, no, don't fall, stay asleep." Chloe mumbles urgently attempting to push the girl up softly back onto her bed as Red tries not to crack a smile at her reaction.
She wraps an arm around the taller girl, taking advantage of the blue haired girl's panic to pull herself as close as possible. "No, let go Red, I need to put you down."
Doing the opposite she softly moves her head to hide in Chloe's shoulder, after a moment she hears a sigh and is moved from arms to lap. Just as planned.
Red isn't so sure how long they stay there, eventually falling back to sleep in the girls embrace. Curling as close as she could get away with while feigning sleep.
It was five in the morning, Red knew because of the alarm she was trying to ignore. It was too early for anyone to be functional, and yet, she could hear Chloe moving around the room softly humming to herself music quietly blaring out of her headphones.
She opens her mouth to speak, to ask the girl to turn her alarm off, but then Chloe starts to sing. Voice bouncing sweetly off the walls and Red can't bring herself to interrupt.
Opening an eye, she can see the girl goofily dancing as she cleans her area, singing softly to herself.
"I'll learn the piano and you can play cello, and every night playing La Vie En Rose."Chloe dramatically leans against her bedpost hand acting as if it were holding a microphone, holding her hand out to some invisible person.
A wave of affection overflows in Red's heart, almost like a tsunami as she watches, lips forming into a gentle smile. Chloe dancing and spins around the room eyes closed, a happy smile covering her face as she bounces around in a torrent of excitement
"Days pass, now all we do is laugh, never good at keeping score." She spins around with a smile stopping to stare at Red with her hand reaching out.
Falling to her knee as she spins back around, quickly jumping up as she picks up a towel tossing it in a trash.
The song ends and Chloe turns around a soft smile lighting up her face as her eyes land on Red, immediately widening at being caught, "did I wake you up?"
Red shakes her head, blinking the sleep from her eyes to point at the blaring alarm clock. How loud did she have her music that Chloe couldn't even hear its shrill screams?
Wincing, the girl walks over to the alarm hitting the button. "Sorry."
Red pouts softly when the other girl turns away, no longer singing along. Picking up her clothing quietly, music still blaring from the headphones, but Chloe made no noise.
She missed Chloe's voice already.
"So.... Why don't you sing as much as," Red makes a gesture to the royals in the garden, awkwardly singing at each other. "Well, them."
Chloe face makes a weird expression as she releases a breath of air, "don't have anyone to sing for, I guess." Red's eyebrows furrow in response, feeling like maybe this was another culture difference she wasn't sure of.
Here everyone sang, she didn't get why Chloe didn't since it wasn't against the rules, in Wonderland it was a punishment quickly followed by death.
Taking a quick breath, as if her mother may hear her say it, Red tilts her head at Chloe as she tries to figure out what it meant that she didn't have anyone to sing for. Deciding to bite the bullet she opens her mouth.
"You could sing for me if you want." The taller girls head swivels towards her so fast she worries her neck may break. Side eyeing her, Red takes a bite out of the sandwich in her hand, trying her best to ignore how that look seemed to penetrate her entire being as if Chloe were attempting to parse out her soul.
A sweet smile slowly forming on Chloe's lips as the girl shakes her head, whether it was in denial or agreement Red couldn't tell you. Moment's pass with Chloe just staring softly at her, trying to figure something out that she couldn't understand.
Taking a sip of her tea, she felt an earbud being pushed into her ear, the sound of music quickly following.
"How about... we work up to that?" Chloe's eyes are crinkled sweetly, the look on her face was a fondness that she felt she couldn't ever deserve, but Red can't stop herself from allowing it anyways because it's Chloe
Eyebrows furrowing, taking in what the other girl had said, she moves her hand to gently fix the earbud into a more comfortable position, Red wasn't sure what it meant to 'work up' to singing, but she knew that she could just pretend to sleep or sit in the bathroom quietly.
If she just bided her time, Chloe would sing, her voice soothing her as Red eavesdrops on something she isn't supposed to be listening to.
"Alright." Nodding her head, she scoots closer to the taller girl taking another sip of her tea as another love song begins to play.
Red sits on Chloe's lap as she listens to the other girl's music playing through the speakers, hands moving across paper as she silently draws.
It was their alone time, Chloe had taken it upon herself to show Red different genres of musicv until one 'stuck out' to her, but if she were honest, she just enjoyed the time since Chloe would pull her into her lap.
At first it had been awkward, then after a few days she'd grabbed her sketch book, quietly drawing as she could feel the vibrations of Chloe humming into her ear. Never singing, Red hadn't 'worked up' to that yet.
Though, she was still unclear on what that meant she was content to just sit there and draw.
It was probably weeks of this that had caused her to keep steady lines even as Chloe swayed her gently to the music, arms wrapped around her, and her head laying on the shorter girl's shoulder.
Red walks into their dorm to music playing, it was another one of Chloe's love songs. A smile spreads itself across her face as she notices the girl in the middle of the room, face filled with nerves that she couldn't quite understand.
A hand quickly shoots out towards her, the taller girl giving an awkward grin as Red takes it, eyebrows furrowing deeper. Until they start moving, Chloe gently leading her into a dance.
Elegantly leading her across the dorm room as she swayed, Red following along her heart bursting with an emotion that she hadn't quite been able to pin down, simply putting it as how much she enjoyed Chloe's taste in music.
But it seemed to explode as the other girl starts singing gently into her ear, "so this is love."
Red takes a quick intake of breath as her forehead lands against Chloe's, the only thing she can see is the other girl's soft brown eyes, an affectionate stare piercing her as she's gently lead side to side.
"So this is what makes life divine" She's slowly dipped down and brought up, Chloe's thumb softly rubbing her side as Red's led around, a soft environment surrounding them.
She wishes that she knew the lyrics, Red couldn't explain why but she wants to join in. To join the girl in a duet that she hadn't even thought she could do.
"I'll touch every star in the sky/"
Her bodies quickly lifted up and Red is spun gently and brought down into Chloe's arms, giggling as she stares back lovingly into the other girl's eyes, listening to her softly singing with a raspy voice. Red could listen to her sing forever, the soothing way that the words leave the other girl's lips leaving her feeling like just one whispered hum could inspire her paintings for days.
"So this is the miracle that I've been dreaming of" Falling into another dip, Red waits to be slowly brought back up, instead Chloe follows her down. Lips softly pressing against her own. Red's hands tighten on Chloe's shoulder, pulling herself closer.
The kiss lasts for what felt like too short of a time before the girl pulls away from her again, gently cupping Red's cheek as she continues to sing, this time Red joins in. Feeling as if she were floating.
"So this is love."
