Dean was perched happily on his favorite spot near the window, his little beak busy preening his yellow and gray feathers. The sun streamed in through the glass, warming his small body and making his feathers gleam in the light. His cage door was open, as it often was when Sam was home. But today, Sam had stepped out, trusting that his pets—Dean the Cockatiel and Castiel the Ragdoll Cat—would behave.
Dean chirped a cheerful tune, his eyes closing contentedly as he sang. His song was sweet, a melody he had picked up from the music Sam often played in the house. But as much as Dean loved singing, he loved Castiel’s love and attention even more.
Castiel, with his soft, fluffy fur and striking blue eyes, was lounging on the couch, his tail flicking lazily as he watched Dean with quiet affection. Though they were different in almost every way, the bond between them had grown strong over the months they had lived together. Dean had always been drawn to Castiel’s calm and protective nature, and Castiel had found something irresistibly charming about Dean’s bright personality and sweet songs.
As Dean finished his tune, he hopped down from his perch and fluttered over to where Castiel lay. The cat’s eyes brightened at the sight of his little babybird and he gave a soft, welcoming purr.
“Hey, kitty.” Dean chirped, landing gracefully beside Castiel. “How’s my protective, sweet furball?”
Castiel smiled, a low rumble vibrating in his chest as he leaned down to nuzzle Dean gently. “Hello, my little songbird or should I say my sweet little angel?" Castiel purred in response, his voice filled with warmth. “You sing so beautifully, Dean. It’s like the sun itself is listening.”
Dean blushed, the pink tint barely visible beneath his feathers. “You always know how to make me feel special, kitten.” he said softly, fluttering his wings in a shy display.
Castiel chuckled, pulling Dean closer with a careful paw, tucking the small bird into the warmth of his fur. “You are special, my babybird." Castiel murmured, his eyes soft as he gazed down at him. “You’re the brightest part of my day.”
Dean’s heart fluttered at the words, and he couldn’t help but nuzzle deeper into Castiel’s soft fur, feeling safe and cherished. “I love you so much, my kitten.” Dean whispered, his voice filled with sincerity.
“And I love you so much, my angel." Castiel replied, his purr deepening as he pressed a gentle kiss to the top of Dean’s head. The two of them nestled together, content in each other’s presence, the world outside forgotten in the warmth of their shared affection.
But their peaceful moment was short-lived.
Suddenly, Castiel’s ears twitched, picking up the faint sound of movement from somewhere inside the house. He lifted his head, his body tensing as he caught a scent on the air that made his fur stand on end—other cats, and not the friendly kind.
“Dean,” Castiel whispered, his voice tight with alarm. “Stay close to me, baby.”
Dean, sensing the change in Castiel’s demeanor, looked up at him with wide eyes. “What’s wrong, Cas?”
Before Castiel could answer, three unfamiliar cats appeared in the doorway, their eyes gleaming with predatory intent as they spotted Dean. The largest of the trio, a sleek black cat with piercing yellow eyes, let out a low, menacing growl.
“Well, what do we have here?” the black cat sneered, his gaze fixed on Dean. “Looks like a tasty little snack.”
Panic surged through Dean as he pressed himself closer to Castiel, his heart racing in his chest. “Cas… what do we do?” Dean whispered, his voice trembling.
Castiel’s protective instincts kicked in, and he immediately positioned himself between Dean and the intruders, his fur bristling as he glared at the other cats. “Stay behind me, angel” Castiel growled, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. “I won’t let them hurt you.”
The other two cats, a gray tabby and a ginger with a torn ear, flanked the black cat, their eyes narrowing as they sized up Castiel. “You think you can stop us?” the tabby taunted, his voice dripping with disdain. “There are three of us and only one of you.”
“I don’t care how many of you there are,” Castiel hissed, his muscles coiled and ready to strike. “You’ll have to get through me if you want to touch him.”
The black cat’s eyes glinted with malice. “So be it.”
With a yowl, the three cats lunged at Castiel, their claws extended and fangs bared. Castiel met them head-on, swiping at the tabby with a powerful paw and sending him sprawling to the ground. The ginger cat darted forward, aiming for Castiel’s side, but Castiel twisted, catching the cat with a well-placed bite that sent him scurrying back with a hiss of pain.
Dean watched in terror as the fight unfolded, his heart pounding in his chest. He wanted to help, but he knew he was too small, too fragile. All he could do was stay behind Castiel and pray that his love would be enough to protect them both.
“Cas, be careful, kitten!” Dean cried, his voice filled with fear.
Castiel grunted as he grappled with the tabby, his eyes never leaving Dean. “Don’t worry, Dean. I’ll protect you, angel no matter what.”
But in the chaos, the black cat had slipped around Castiel, his eyes locked on Dean with a predatory gleam. Before Dean could react, the black cat pounced, knocking him to the ground and pinning him with a heavy paw.
Dean let out a terrified squawk, struggling to free himself, but the black cat’s grip was too strong. “Cas!” Dean cried, his voice trembling with panic.
The sound of Dean’s distress pierced through the noise of the fight, and Castiel’s heart lurched with fear. He twisted around, his eyes widening in horror as he saw the black cat looming over Dean, ready to strike.
“No!” Castiel roared, his voice filled with desperation. With a burst of speed, he flung himself at the black cat, sinking his claws into the intruder’s side and dragging him away from Dean. The black cat yowled in pain, slashing wildly at Castiel as he tried to escape, but Castiel didn’t let go. He fought with all the strength he had, driven by the need to protect Dean at any cost.
The other two cats, seeing their leader in trouble, hesitated for a moment before deciding it wasn’t worth the risk. They scrambled for the open window, disappearing into the night with angry hisses. The black cat, realizing he was outnumbered, twisted free from Castiel’s grip and followed, leaving a trail of blood in his wake as he leapt out the window.
The house fell silent, save for the sound of Castiel’s heavy breathing. The adrenaline coursing through his veins slowly ebbed away, replaced by a cold, sinking dread. He turned back to where Dean lay, his eyes widening in horror at the sight that met him.
Dean was lying on the floor, his small body trembling with pain. His wings were bent at awkward angles, feathers torn and stained with blood. His breathing was shallow, each inhale a struggle as he tried to hold back the tears that filled his eyes.
“Dean…” Castiel’s voice broke as he rushed to Dean’s side, his heart pounding with fear. “Dean, babybird, please, stay with me.”
Dean whimpered softly, his voice weak as he looked up at Castiel with tear-filled eyes. “Cas… it hurts…”
Castiel’s heart shattered at the sound of Dean’s pain, and he gently scooped the trembling bird into his paws, cradling him close to his chest.
“I’m so sorry, Dean,” Castiel whispered, his voice choked with tears. “I should have protected you better.”
Dean’s small body trembled in Castiel’s paws, his feathers ruffled and stained with blood. He could barely keep his eyes open, his breaths shallow and pained. But even in his weakened state, Dean managed to give Castiel a faint, reassuring smile. “You… you did your best, my kitten” Dean whispered, his voice barely audible. “You saved me…”
Castiel’s tears spilled over, landing on Dean’s soft feathers as he pressed a gentle kiss to Dean’s head. “You’re going to be okay, baby.” Castiel murmured, his voice trembling with desperation. “I’m going to get you help. Just hold on for me, please.”
Dean let out a weak chirp, his eyes fluttering closed as exhaustion began to take hold. Castiel’s heart clenched with fear, but he knew he couldn’t waste any more time. He had to get help, and fast.
Carefully, Castiel placed Dean on the soft pillow that Sam kept on the couch, making sure Dean was as comfortable as possible. He nuzzled Dean one last time, placing tender kisses on his cheeks and head, before turning and dashing out of the room.
Castiel raced through the house, his heart pounding with fear and urgency. He knew he couldn’t do this alone—he needed a human’s help. Sam wasn’t home, but their neighbor, Charlie, might be. She had always been kind to Castiel and Dean, and she had a spare key to the house in case of emergencies.
Castiel reached the front door and clawed at it, meowing as loudly as he could. When that didn’t work, he turned and sprinted to the window, leaping up onto the sill and scanning the yard for any sign of Charlie. He spotted her just as she was heading to her car, and without hesitation, Castiel let out a loud, desperate yowl.
“Charlie!” Castiel meowed, his voice filled with panic. “Please, help!”
Charlie froze at the sound, her eyes widening in surprise as she turned toward the house. When she saw Castiel frantically pawing at the window, her expression turned to concern. “Cas? What’s wrong, buddy?” she called, hurrying over.
Castiel jumped down from the window and ran back to the door, meowing urgently as Charlie approached. She quickly pulled out the spare key Sam had given her and unlocked the door, stepping inside. “What happened? Where’s Dean?” she asked, worry evident in her voice.
Castiel didn’t waste a second. He darted down the hallway, leading Charlie to the living room where Dean lay on the pillow. When she saw the state Dean was in, her face went pale. “Oh my God,” Charlie gasped, rushing to Dean’s side. “What happened to him?”
Castiel meowed anxiously, pacing back and forth as Charlie gently picked Dean up, cradling him in her hands. “It’s okay, Cas,” Charlie said softly, trying to stay calm despite her own fear. “We’ll get him to the vet right away.”
Charlie grabbed a blanket and carefully wrapped Dean in it, making sure he was secure and warm. She tucked him close to her chest as she stood, then turned to Castiel, who was watching with wide, fearful eyes. “Come on, Cas,” Charlie said, nodding toward the door. “You’re coming with us.”
Without hesitation, Castiel followed Charlie out to her car, leaping into the back seat as she gently placed Dean in a small carrier. Castiel pressed his nose to the carrier’s bars, his heart aching at the sight of Dean’s fragile form. “Stay with me, Dean." Castiel whispered, his voice trembling. “Please stay with me, angel.”
The drive to the vet felt like an eternity. Castiel’s mind raced with fear and worry, his thoughts consumed by the sight of Dean’s injuries. He couldn’t bear the thought of losing Dean, not when they had so much left to share, so many more songs to sing, so many more moments to spend together.
When they finally arrived at the vet’s office, Charlie burst through the door, shouting for help. The staff sprang into action, rushing to take Dean from her hands and whisking him away to the back room. Castiel tried to follow, but a vet tech gently held him back, guiding him to an exam table where another vet began to check him for injuries.
Castiel barely noticed the sting of antiseptic as his scratches were cleaned and bandaged. His thoughts were solely on Dean, on the small bird’s pained chirps that he could faintly hear from the other room. Every time Dean cried out, Castiel’s heart twisted with helplessness, his instincts screaming at him to protect his love, to comfort him, but he was forced to stay still, away from Dean’s side.
When the vet finally finished tending to Castiel’s wounds, the tech released him, allowing him to jump down from the table. Castiel immediately sprinted toward the door that led to the back room, his paws skidding across the tiled floor as he desperately searched for Dean.
He found Dean lying on a small bed, surrounded by soft blankets. His wings were carefully wrapped in bandages, and his tiny legs were splinted to keep them still while they healed. Dean was unconscious, his breathing shallow but steady. Castiel’s heart ached at the sight, but he was relieved to see that Dean was alive.
With a soft meow, Castiel jumped onto the table and gently nuzzled Dean’s head, licking his feathers and pressing a kiss to his beak, just as Dean always liked. “You’re going to be okay, Dean.” Castiel whispered, his voice filled with emotion. “I’m here now. You’re safe, honeybee”
Castiel curled up beside Dean, his fluffy body providing warmth and comfort as he kept a protective vigil over his love. He stayed like that for hours, refusing to move even when Charlie and the vet came in to check on them. Every now and then, Castiel would place a soft kiss on Dean’s head, murmuring words of encouragement and love, hoping that Dean could hear him even in his unconscious state.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Dean stirred. His eyes slowly fluttered open, and he let out a weak chirp as he tried to focus on his surroundings. When he saw Castiel beside him, a faint smile touched his beak.
“Cas… my kitten, you’re here… Are you okay?” Dean whispered, his voice weak but filled with relief.
“I’m here, sweetheart” Castiel replied, his voice trembling with emotion. “I’ll always be here. Also I'm okay. You're the injured one, angel”
Dean closed his eyes, leaning into Castiel’s warmth as a tear slipped down his cheek. “Thank you… for saving me, my kitty."
Castiel licked away the tear, pressing another kiss to Dean’s head. “I’d do anything for you, Dean. You mean everything to me, my babybird.”
Dean’s heart swelled with love at Castiel’s words, and he let out a soft, contented chirp. Despite the pain, despite everything they had been through, he felt safe and loved in Castiel’s presence. The warmth of Castiel’s fur, the gentle hum of his purrs, the softness of his kisses—it was all Dean needed to know that everything would be okay.
As Dean slowly began to recover, Castiel never left his side. He was fiercely protective, watching over Dean with a vigilance that bordered on obsessive. Every time Sam came close to check on Dean, Castiel would hiss and bat him away, blaming Sam for leaving the window open and causing the whole ordeal.
Sam took the hissing and swatting in stride, but Charlie wasn’t as forgiving. She showed up at Sam’s door with a stern expression, and after a few words exchanged, Sam returned with an apologetic look and a couple of scratches courtesy of Charlie’s fingernails.
Once Dean was well enough to leave the vet, Castiel stayed close as they returned home. Every night, he curled around Dean on the couch, keeping him warm and safe within the circle of his fur. Dean would nestle close, his wings carefully folded against his body as he sang soft, sweet songs just for Castiel.
Their bond only grew stronger with each passing day. Castiel remained Dean’s protector, always alert for any sign of danger, and Dean found comfort in Castiel’s unwavering presence. They were two different beings, from different worlds, but their love transcended those boundaries, binding them together in a way that nothing could break.
One evening, as they lay together on the couch, Dean nestled into the soft fur of Castiel’s chest, his wings wrapped around himself for warmth. Castiel hummed softly, his purrs a soothing rhythm that lulled Dean into a state of peaceful contentment.
“You’re my everything, Cas. I love you so much, kitten” Dean whispered, his voice filled with love as he snuggled closer. “Thank you… for always being there for me.”
Castiel nuzzled the top of Dean’s head, pressing a gentle kiss to his feathers. “And you’re my everything, Dean. I love you too, my lovebird. I’ll always protect you, always keep you safe, angel."
Dean let out a contented chirp, his heart swelling with warmth as he listened to the steady beat of Castiel’s heart beneath him. Safe in Castiel’s embrace, with his love’s soft hums filling the air, Dean knew that no matter what challenges they faced, they would face them together.
Because in the end, love was stronger than any danger, any pain. And their love, bound by feathers and fur, was a love that would last forever.
