Work Text:
You are an absolutely, absolutely, worthless child, without a doubt the most worthless kid in this whole world.
Rick and Morty just came back from a mission that went bust because Morty messed up the negotiation. Morty gulped and rubbed his arm, wearing a long hoodie to cover the scars he's been leaving on himself. Rick wasn't saying anything, but his grip on his flask was white-knuckled, and when he looked at Morty...well, let's just say if looks could kill, Morty would be dead. Rick gritted his teeth and clenched his fists "Morty do you have ANY idea how valuable that was!?" "R-Rick! I'm sorry I just-" "Just what!? Just can't do anything with your grandpa holding your hand every step of the way!?" "I messed up! I'm sorry okay!?" "Sorry doesn't cut it! Sorry won't give me the materials I need. now will it?!" "We can just go back-" "No we fucking can't Morty, that planet only allows visits once in every 1000 years!" "Then why not use your portal gun-" "That planet only exists in our dimension you fucking idiot! You fucked it all up!" "I'm sorry ok!?" "Shut the fuck up!" Rick took a deep breath, pinched his nose, and muttered something so faint Morty could barely hear it "You're fucking worthless..." Morty gasped, his eyes shining with unshed tears. Rick turned his back on him and pointed at the door. "Go." "But-" Rick glared at him, rubbing salt in the wound "Now." Morty scurried out of the room, and Rick sat in his desk chair with his face in his hands.
"He's right y'know." Morty's inner voice confirmed "You really are, I don't know why he's just now realizing it." Morty sobbed softly as he prayed nobody would notice as he dashed to his room as the word worthless echoed through his head.
You are awful at studying, exercises, and speaking
Morty was tapping his pencil on his desk in an empty classroom during school lunch, while staring at his notebook. He was trying to focus, but all he could think of was Jessica's Instagram pics. What if she posted something new? He shook his head, all he needed was some excerise and he would be good. He stood up and began doing jumping jacks to get the blood pumping, but after 5 he was out of breath.
"Oh my god." Morty's inner voice laughed out "Seriously, you can't even do 5 jumping jacks! You're fucking weak."
Morty's cheeks turned tomato red and his face felt blazing hot with shame. No. That wasn't true. All he needed was a quick walk in the school hallway.
"You're just procrastinating. God you're pathetic."
Morty shook his head, attempting to silence the voices. Trying to swallow the lump in the throat, but he couldn't do anything about the sickening drop in his stomach that he felt.
He went out and saw Jessica. She gave him the sweetest smile Morty has ever seen. Morty felt his heart beating at least 2x faster. His face turned strawberry red "O-oh uh..." His voice came out even squeakier than usual. He cleared his throat "U-uhm...well J-Jessica I..." Jessica raised an eyebrow "Morty..." She tilted her head slightly and Morty cursed himself for thinking it was the cutest thing he's seen all day. "Are...you ok?" Morty nodded vigorously even though the word that left his lip was "No." Jessica walked backwards "Well...see you soon Morty." Then she strolled off.
"Wow...nice job pal." Morty's inner voice commented, laced with sarcasm. "Jessica will totallllyyyy get with you after this. God, you can't do one thing right. Worthless."
Morty will just cut himself when he gets home.
It will help.
Or at least that's what he told himself.
I mean, it made the voices shut up, and at least it was something Morty had control over.
All the time, Rick always made Morty do whatever Rick wanted. Rick had control over everything in Morty's life. But...cutting was his choice. Something he could do. He finally had something to hold onto. And goddamnit. He was going to clutch onto it and never let go.
It didn't matter if he always felt disgusting afterwards.
It didn't matter that the scars were so difficult to hide.
It didn't matter that he hated himself whenever he saw the scars.
He had control.
It was worth it.
You are just a destitute, dense and dirty child
"Morty!" Rick barked "C'mon we're going on an adventure!" Morty blinked his eyes open "Rick...it's 3am...can it wa-" before he could finish his sentence, Rick already dragged him out of bed. We need to get xanplop from dimension 343πalphaC" Morty whined "Rick...I have a test tomorrow." Rick groaned "School is a waste of time Morty, you're better off helping me." Morty sighed and stayed quiet. "And here I thought you grew some balls..." Morty's inner voice stated sarcastically remarked. The ride to it was quiet and when they got there, certain things happened, and to make a long story short, Rick was fighting with an alien and was yelling at Morty "Morty! Disarm the bomb NOW!" Morty's hands were shaking "I-I don't know what to do!" Rick groaned "Cut the green wire!" Morty's eyes darted. 10 seconds left on the clock, all the wires were different shades of green "Th-they are all green!" The bomb was about to go off and Rick dove into Morty, activating a bubble-like shield around them, holding onto Morty as the bomb exploded, killing the alien Rick was fighting. Afterwards, Rick released Morty and scanned his face, looking for any sign of injury, after deducing that Morty was safe, his unibrow furrowed "Nice job idiot. I ask you to do one thing...made me waste my last shield...do you have any idea how much work it takes to make one of those?!" Morty looked down to the ground "I'm sorry..." Morty muttered, rubbing his arm. Rick let out a long sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose "You're such a fucking dumbass" Rick growled out as Morty looked to the floor in shame.
"He's right. Worthless." Morty's inner voice repeatedly echoed that same sentence in his head.
Morty wished he had his pocket knife.
You’re a germy, crybaby, scaredy-cat
Rick and Morty were on another adventure, Morty squeaked in fear as a fireball nearly missed him, they were attacking a lava monster, trying to steal his heart. Morty shivered "I-I don't know about this." Rick commanded "Don't be a baby! We need this heart! Just man the fuck up!" Morty was about to talk, but a fireball barely hit his pants, causing a small fire, which Morty shirked as he tried to put it out. "Fucking Christ!" Rick bitched as he quickly went over to Morty and put out the fire "Last time I expect you not to be a fucking pussy..." Rick mumbled "Stay in the car." Rick demanded, pointing to the car. Morty got to the car, curled up into a ball, and cried, That wasn't even the meanest thing Rick has said this week! But he was just so tired...he was constantly insulted and forced to keep it all in...he had to let it out! That didn't make him a pussy...did it?
Morty's inner voice answered his question "Yes it does make you a fucking pussy. You've known Rick for 6 years...you should be used to it by now but you have to cry like a fucking pussy. Rick was right, you are worthless. Maybe you should just kill yourself."
Morty's sobs got louder as he actually thought about the idea.
(...) Come here, your guardian will protect you
Morty was on an adventure with Rick, his life was on the line as usual, he was running, but tripped, putting himself in the line of fire of an alien gun, Rick took his arm and pulled Morty behind him, quickly shooting the alien. "Don't do that!" Rick growled out "That was so fucking stupid of you!"
"Everything you do is stupid." Morty's inner voice spat out with a clear venom.
Morty looked down, twiddling his thumbs "Sorry..." Rick just looked away and took a swig from his flask. "Whatever."
"He should've let you die. You deserve it." Morty's inner voice explained.
Morty's fists clenched.
It was right.
Together, tethered, stay with me forever.
Rick stumbled to Morty's room, clumsily turning on the lights. Morty woke up, blinking multiple times "R-Rick...what...?" Rick hugged him and Morty stiffened. He was able to clearly smell the sharp, stale, and sour odor of alcohol. Oh. Rick was drunk. That explained it. Rick muttered "Y-you're my little buddy...y-y'know?" Morty looked to the side, wondering if those words felt as hollow to Rick's ears as they felt to Morty's. "G-grandpa loves you..." "Yep..." Rick broke away to stare at Morty, his pupils dilated due to alcohol, they were dilated so much there was only a small sliver of blue.
Morty felt a pit in his stomach, his eyes fell to his sheets. How much did Rick drink? He took the top of Morty's head "Y-you gotta promise grandpa something." Morty's face instinctively scrunched up at the bitter stench of alcohol on Rick's breath. "P-promise grandpa that you'll stay with him forever..c-can't...I can't lose you...remember, Rick and Morty, 100 years..." Morty sighed "I promise..." Rick laughed and hugged Morty "Heh...Rick and Morty forever..." Morty shivered at the hot breath on his neck as Rick spoke. "Mhm..." Morty hummed out. He hated the happiness he felt at that thought...Rick and Morty, forever.
You are an absolutely, absolutely useless child. A child who would have been dead if it weren’t for me
Morty was in his room, crying. He's been doing that a lot lately. He used to be so good at holding back, at acting like Rick's words didn't affect him. But it's been so hard...why was Rick like this? His inner voice growled in digust.
"Ungrateful." It stated bitterly. "That's what you are. Rick had to save your ass countless times!"
"He's the one who puts me in danger!" Morty told himself.
"Oh please." Morty could practically hear the eye roll in it's voice "You are such a fucking idiot you would get yourself killed doing something stupid."
"That wouldn't be so bad." Morty admitted quietly.
"Of course it wouldn't...because you're useless." Morty's inner voice said casually.
(...) You are a terribly, terribly, lonely child
Morty laid in his bed, looking at the celling. He's been having trouble finding reasons to get out of bed. I mean, Rick taught him thaat nothing matters, so why even go to bed?
Why even continue living?
Numb. That's the best way you could describe Morty's feelings most of the time.
His inner voice was repeatedly telling him to kill himself, and Morty become progessively more desensitized to the idea.
I mean he was no use to anyone anyway.
Worthless.
That word still echoed in Morty's mind.
Rick's voice was saying it over and over and over...
Rick was his only friend.
And even he wouldn't miss him if he was gone.
...
Morty knew what he needed to do.
Despite everything, that child won’t trust me at all and decided to run far away from my side
Rick was pounding into Morty's door. "Morty! Morty! Why did you lock your door you little shit?!" Rick growled as he knocked the door down. His legs felt weak as he collasped onto the ground at the sight.
And before I realized it, that child was bloodied. Even so that child ran away from my side
Morty was laying down, his arms covered in bloody scars. He wasn't moving.
Child
Rick's hand was shaking as he reached for Morty, lightly shaking him. Begging him to wake up.
CHILD
Rick grabbed onto Morty's arms, shaking him. "W-wake up you fucking idiot!" Rick begged "JUST WAKE THE FUCK UP!" He slapped Morty. Nothing. Rick felt his chest tighten as his vision went blurry.
"Crying over Prime's child being dead...fucking pussy."
"NO! He isn't dead!" Rick screamed in his mind. He could bring him back, he knew he could. He scoured his lab coat, bringing out a device meant to revive people. He connected the wires to Morty's temple and did chest compression as he used the device to administer a shock meant to start someone's heart.
Nothing.
Rick was shaking. He was hyperventaliting, clutching his hair. No...no...NO!
His body was hot, tears were streaming down his face, he clutched his chest hoping that his heart would stop beating so fast. He was asleep! He had to be asleep! That's why this wasn't working! He couldn't fucking be dead! It was meant to be Rick and Morty for 100 years! He can't be..
Rick broke into sobs as he felt Morty's skin, cold to the touch, and the pulse, feeling nothing.
I am an absolutely, absolutely worthless child. I’m a worthless child because mine lives on no more.
Rick has been staying in his lab since then. He couldn't eat. He couldn't do anything. He was just there with Morty's corpse for weeks on end. He needed a way to revive Morty.
"Worthless." Rick's inner voice.
"Look what you did to him, this is all your fault, you couldn't protect Diane, and you couldn't protect Morty either. You killed him. He did this because of you."
Rick clutched his hair. Gritting his teeth. He pulled his hair roughly, wanting to punish himself for what he did.
"You know there's only way to make it even..." Rick's inner voice continued.
Now I have nobody to save me from myself. I am a terribly, terribly, lonely child. I’m a lonely child because mine lives no more. I am a terribly, terribly, lonely child
Rick laid surrounded by beer cans. He didn't get up. He only got up so he could take Morty on adventures. But why even bother? Morty was dead. And it was all Rick's fault. Rick was alone. He pushed everyone away, wanting to soley focus on Morty.
"You deserve this. You deserve to be alone."
The voice was right.
He should just...
If only I could turn back the hands on the clock.
It should've been him. Rick knew that. Morty at least had some morals. Meanwhile Rick was here killing people and destroying planets without a second thought. He would do anything to see Morty again. His eyes fell on a gun.
...
Maybe he could.
"No you won't you sick old man. If God even exists, he's a dick, not a fucking idiot, and he hates you. As he should. Morty's going to heaven and you're going to hell."
Rick was desperate.
He didn't even believe in the afterlife.
But he would do anything ANYTHING to see Morty again.
Rick reached for the gun.
He placed it to his temple.
The last thing he heard was the shot from the gun.
