Work Text:
Katsuki startles awake.
He glances over at the clock displayed on the bedside table. Seeing as there is still 23 minutes until the alarm goes off, confusion floods him as to what had woken him up. It’s, unfortunately, fairly normal for him to wake up due to nightmares. But he doesn’t feel any of that gross, mind stickiness that comes from experiencing one of those. Katsuki closes his eyes again and hums, feeling a little too tired to try and figure out what had happened. When he goes to turn into his husband, that’s when he notices what woke him up. The back of Izuku’s hand is pressed against Katsuki’s cheek. He realizes, with a quiet laugh, that Izuku had literally smacked him awake. Katsuki rolls his eyes. He lightly grabs Izuku’s wrist and pulls his hand off his face, settling it by Izuku’s side.
Katsuki sits up on his elbow. His husband is splayed across the bed, one leg is thrown over Katsuki’s while the other is close to hanging off the edge of the bed. The hand that Katsuki didn’t set down is twisted in a way that cannot be comfortable, palm up and finger tips pointed towards the headboard. His lips are slightly parted, breathing quiet and soft breaths.
He looks so much younger when he sleeps. The pinch of his eyebrows is gone, face completely relaxed. Katsuki brings his hand up to Izuku’s face. His middle finger is lightly pressed between Izuku’s eyebrows and he slowly brushes the pad of his finger down the bridge of his nose. Izuku’s face scrunches after Katsuki pulls his hand away, then it goes lax again.
Katsuki huffs, amused and fond. He pushes his hand through Izuku’s messy curls. Earning a hum and a head tilt from his husband. Katsuki detangles some of the strands before his hand goes back down to Izuku’s face. His fingers easily move across his face, mapping it out as if Katsuki hasn’t seen him almost everyday of his life. He follows the curve of Izuku’s cheekbones, pressing against the skin under his eye, trailing down to the corner of his mouth, down to his jawline, following along the sharp edge until Katsuki reaches his ear. He gently rubs at the skin there with his pointer finger before pulling away. Only a few more minutes until his alarm goes off. Katsuki turns it off, not wanting to risk waking Izuku. Though his husband can sleep like the dead on nights he had stayed up late. (Which he had, again. Because he’s an idiot.)
Katsuki presses a kiss to Izuku’s hairline, letting his lips linger for a few seconds before he pulls away from him. Izuku hums in his sleep, turning to face Katsuki now. An overwhelming part of Katsuki wants to just stay in bed, admire Izuku until he wakes up. Then continue to admire him, watching as Izuku goes red under the attention.
But Katsuki has a routine he has to stick to. So he begrudgingly gets out of bed.
The sun has yet to take to the sky. Just barely peeking over the horizon, casting minimal light into their apartment. Katsuki’s eyes are fairly adjusted to the light level, and the added knowledge of knowing his home like the back of his hand helps him traverse to the bathroom. He makes sure the door is shut before he flicks on the light. Katsuki hisses, closing his eyes and then blinking against the sudden brightness. He’s slow as he changes into the running clothes he left in here. Tiredness still clinging to him as he moves.
He turns the light off and exits the bathroom. Blinking again as he gets used to the darkness of the apartment. On the bed, Izuku makes a curious noise. Katsuki walks towards him and leans over. He pats down Izuku curls.
“Just going for my run, baby. Go back to sleep.” He presses a kiss to his forehead. Izuku hums and nods. His eyes stay closed, and not even a second later he seems to have fallen back into sleep. If he was even awake in the first place, that is.
Katsuki exits the apartment quietly. With his headphones on, keys in his pocket, and his warm up stretches complete, he begins a slow running pace down the sidewalk.
Slow, almost lovey music plays to his ears. Katsuki shakes his head but doesn’t skip the song. His damn husband has made him go soft, as of late. Though Katsuki knows he’s been soft for the nerd since high school. He’s been scared of it, back then. But now Katsuki embraces it so fully it feels like it burns. His love and affection for Izuku is damn near immeasurable. He couldn’t put words to it if he tried.
(They’re yin and yang, push and pull, twin stars, Hope and Victory.)
Katsuki’s muscles and lungs start to burn when he reaches two miles. He slows into a walk, settling his breathing before going back into a run. The sun is higher now, bathing everything in a soft golden glow. It shines through the branches of trees, reflecting off the dew sticking to grass and leaves. Katsuki’s feet hit heavy against the pavement as he wraps around a fountain and goes back the way he came, towards home.
Early risers, later than Katsuki of course, are starting to appear. Katsuki waves half heartedly at the people he passes on the sidewalk. The occasional car passes on the street, their headlights still on due to the slight darkness of the early morning. Lights are starting to come on inside of people’s houses. By the time Katsuki makes it back to his home, a few of their neighbors are leaving their own homes to head to work. Katsuki nods at them in greeting, getting waves and smiles back.
He enjoys the place they live, the people around them. It’s not a bad place him and Izuku have chosen together.
Going back into their bedroom, Katsuki isn’t surprised to see his husband still asleep. His position has changed again, completely star-fished out now that Katsuki isn’t occupying the other half of the bed. He smiles fondly at the scene before going back into the bathroom.
The hot shower is a nice way to help wake him up a little more. Katsuki indulges himself, taking an extra few minutes than he normally would under the warm spray of water. He cleans the sweat off himself, massaging his cinnamon shampoo into his blonde hair. He wishes Izuku was awake and would do it for him. His husband always touches him kindly, rubbing his fingers against Katsuki’s scalp in a heavenly way. But alas, Izuku is the furthest thing from a morning person.
Katsuki pats himself dry once he’s out of the shower. He walks back into their bedroom, pulling underwear and sweatpants from the top drawer of their dresser. He grabs one of Izuku’s shirts instead of his own, the soft fabric and lavender smell of it causing him to sigh.
He spares another glance at his husband before heading to the kitchen. Immediately putting on a pot of coffee before doing anything else. He leans against the counter as it brews, eventually the dark liquid pours into his chosen mug of the morning. A Deku mug, with his name plastered over the green and white colors of his hero suit. It’s one of the first merch things Izuku had put out, along with tshirts, hoodies, a pajama set, and baseball cap. Katsuki had bought all of it the minute it went live, even though Izuku said he could give it to him for free.
He puts two cubes of sugar and a splash of vanilla creamer into his coffee. Katsuki sips it, sighing at the pleasant taste that spreads across his tongue and the warmth that slides down to his stomach.
After that’s settled, Katsuki begins working on breakfast. He pulls an iron pan from the cabinet by the sink, setting it on the stove and turning the heat on. He hums when looking into the contents of their fridge, deciding that omelets sound good for the morning.
Katsuki starts cooking the bacon and that’s when he feels a pair of strong arms wrap around his waist and a chin resting on his shoulder.
“Kacchan,” His husband mumbles before turning his head to press a light kiss against Katsuki’s neck.
“Hey, Izu. About time you woke up.”
He gets a hum in response, and not much else. Izuku stays wrapped around him as Katsuki finishes making breakfast. Mirroring his steps when he has to move away from the stove. He sets their plates and then settles his arms on top of Izuku’s.
“You have to let go of me to eat, dummy.”
Izuku makes a noise of protest. He pulls his head away from Katsuki’s shoulder, opting to bury it in between his shoulder blades instead. “I don’t wanna.”
Katsuki laughs softly at him. He pries Izuku’s arms off of him, then turns around to face him. His husband is always a vision in the morning. His curly hair is a complete mess, eyes droopy from sleep, and that perfect, gentle smile he always wears when looking at Katsuki in the early times of the day. Katsuki hums and leans forward to kiss him.
“C’mon, baby. I’m hungry.” He hands a plate to Izuku and grabs his own. He locks his pinky with him and leads him to their dining room.
They eat breakfast in sleepy, on Izuku’s part, silence. The sun has reached the point where it leaks in through the window positioned behind Izuku’s head. Giving him a glowing outline as he eats. Katsuki forgets his food momentarily as he stares at him, overcome with pure love and happiness. Izuku takes a bit of his food before looking up, catching Katsuki’s gaze.
“What?” He asks with food still in his mouth and a smile on his lips. Normally, Katsuki would berate him for talking with his mouth full. But in the early morning, with the golden light of the sun, and the love of his life looking at him, Katsuki just shakes his head and smiles.
“Nothing,” He answers. He pauses. “I love you.”
Izuku beams at him. And suddenly he’s brighter than the sun illuminating behind him. Katsuki falls in love all over again. Just like he does everyday, like he will continue to do.
“I love you too, dearest.”
Katsuki abandons his food in order to kiss the life out of Izuku.
