“So I have some news, guys,” Ed said as he took his place on the bridge. “My parents are going to be with us for a couple days.”
“Oh, cool!” said Gordon. “I haven’t seen them in ages!”
“When?” Kelly asked.
“Tomorrow,” Ed replied. “They need transportation back to Earth, and we’re close enough to pick them up on our way. And it’ll be an easy way for me to have a quick visit with them.”
“Great,” she said. “When they get on, can I get off? I think I just got transferred to a ship on the other side of the galaxy.”
“Kelly…”
“Your mother hates me.”
“She does not.”
“Um, yeah, she does,” Gordon interjected.
“Gordon,” Ed said, “not helping!”
“Have they ever been on the Orville?” Talla asked.
“Nope,” said Ed. “I’m pretty excited, actually. I hope they’re impressed!”
“Of course they’ll be impressed,” Kelly said with a reassuring smile. “You’re an amazing captain. So amazing that you won’t need a first officer for a couple of days, right?”
“Kelly…”
Kelly sighed. “I’m kidding. I think.”
Gordon chuckled. “The only thing that scares Kelly. Her mother-in-law!”
Kelly rolled her eyes. “She’s not my mother-in-law. And she doesn’t scare me! I just know she doesn’t like me. Didn’t really like me when I married Ed, definitely doesn’t like me now.”
“Ex-mother-in-law!” Gordon teased. “Even worse!”
“She does like you,” Ed argued, then added under his breath, “underneath the hostility and aggression.”
“Sure,” Kelly said. “I’m going to send out a message to the crew. Anyone who does anything stupid or unprofessional before we reach Earth will feel my wrath later. And Klyden can attest to exactly how painful that is.”
