Chapter 1: close your eyes and blow out the candles

Chapter Text

It was Shippo who remembered that year. And it wasn’t like anyone else had forgotten about Kagome’s birthday, but he specifically remembered what she wanted. For demons, it was almost arbitrary to celebrate one’s day of birth, given their longer lifespans.

Years felt differently.

Obviously, demons experienced the same amount of days within a year. Experienced the same seasons. The same passage of time.

But Shippo remembered a conversation he had listened in on that was between Kagome and Rin, where the elder of the two asked when Rin’s birthday was.

Rin had said she doesn’t remember much, besides a faint memory of her mother saying something about it being cold when she was born.

“What if we pick a day during the winter to celebrate it?” Kagome had offered, already pulling out an annotated calendar she had made after a trip to her present. It had taken Kagome several weeks to compute and to cross reference to create an accurate calendar. It seemed to be working well, if her dates were right.

Shippo decided at that moment to make his presence known and tiptoe into what was known as Kagome’s office within Sesshoumaru’s Shiro. It was just down the hall from the Demon Lord’s personal office and bed chambers. Unlike Sesshoumaru’s pristine and spotless walls, Kagome’s walls were covered with drawings from both Rin and Shippo.

“Of course, it would be nice to know the exact date you were born, Rin-chan, but it’s still a good idea to honor your birth mother for giving birth to you. Because in a way, you celebrate one’s birthday as a thank you to the one who birthed you.”

Shippo settled himself on one of the vacant floor pillows beside Rin and tucked his legs underneath him. “My mother mentioned that I was born in autumn.”

Kagome looked over to the kit with an indecipherable look upon her face, as if she was trying to figure out the exact date. Which, in Shippo’s experience, was highly likely.
