Work Text:
Sun and Moon after being one for years have just separated. Moon left Sun in the daycare to tend to the kiddos, meanwhile Moon went out and explored the outside on his own. Coming across a forest he almost trips over something.
“Gah! What the hell?!”
Moon stead’s himself and looks down to see what he tripped on. A stick, not like a flimsy branch off a tree no, no. This stick was beautiful. The markings on it, the way it felt in his hands. Moon was in awe at it. Knowing that the stick would eventually fall apart and break he took it back to his lab and make it metal instead of bark. The stick may not be sentient of capable of emotions but Moon is and he’s in love. Sun however was concerned about Moon’s sanity to say the least.
“Moon it’s a stick! It can’t even love you back!”
“You don’t know that! The stick loves me and I love it! You’re in love with someone who’s basically a Barbie doll!”
Sun gasped in offense
“Roxanne is not a Barbie doll! She is beautiful and her hair is soft and her eyes-“
Sun goes on and on about Roxanne, getting lost in his thoughts so much that he doesn’t even notice when Moon walks away and into his room.
“Don’t listen to Sun…He’s crazy and doesn’t understand us…”
Moon puts the stick down, he stares at it for a while before a thought crosses his mind…
“Am I crazy…?”
No, no, no! He’s not! So what if he’s finding love in an inanimate object? There’s nothing wrong with that, people fall in love with objects all the time…right?
Moon just stares at the stick, questioning his sanity. Is he actually in love? Is he just looking for comfort for trauma? Is he capable of love…?
Moon picks the stick up and moves it off his bed to unearth it where Sun can find it.
***Months later***
It had been a while since Moon found the stick, he’s been using it in a way he shouldn’t…hitting the person he shared a body with. Not that Moon cares about hurting Sun. No. He cares about using the thing he loves as a weapon, he could never imagine making something a weapon that shouldn’t be one…so why is he doing this?
The thoughts and Sun’s words come running back to him.
*”It can’t love you back”*
*”Your crazy Moon”*
So what if he’s crazy? There’s nothing wrong with that…Right? Lots of people are crazy. But not the same kind of crazy…
“…computer?”
“Yes Moon?” One of the twins answer
“…”
“Moon?” The other asks
“I need to go into my head…one of you come with me.”
***Moon’s head:The Beach***
Killcode or KC as he’s called now towers over Moon. Only one of them is able to leave, the other looses their memory and dies, thanks to Sun blowing up Moon’s magic pool.
“I’m not killing you KC.”
“I have nothing more to do with my life, I’ve learned to be a good person and while I wished I could have been I know that is impossible because you are more needed than me.”
“No I’m not…I can’t change unlike you…I’m letting you live. You need to become a better person.” Moon doesn’t even let KC argue.
“Hey Sun?”
“Yeah Moon?”
“What’s this thing?” New Moon holds the stick and turns it around as he examines it
“Oh! That’s the old you’s stick! He was in love with it or something”
New Moon gags and throws the stick far under the bed where it can’t be found
“Ew! It’s a stick! Was he crazy?!”
“…yeah” Sun looks down and sighs, regretting his past words
“Yeah he was…”
***November 2023***
“God dammit our rooms are gone!”
New Moon groans in anger at the loss of his room.
“Actually! That means the stick is gone!”
“Oh…yeah I guess it does…”
***Old Moon’s return***
“Oh! Moon by the way! Your stick is in your room! I saved it before the fire”
“You did? I thought you told the other mean it was gone?” Moon tilts his head in confusion
“I did…Moon I’m sorry for judging you for loving it…I shouldn’t have called you crazy that wasn’t what you needed.”
“It’s fine Sun…don’t worry about it”
Moon heads up to his room seeing the stick laying on his bed. He stares for a while before picking it up and taking it outside. Moon stares out into the ocean before throwing the stick into it.
“No more hurting my brother…new life…new start.”
Sun and Lunar watch from the house
“Huh…didn’t think he’d do that” Lunar speaks as he turns to look at Sun
“Yeah…me neither…guess he really is a new person. I’m proud of him”
Metal does sink but bark doesn’t…the stick remains out there…floating as it waits for Moon, it’s love. To come back for it.
