Work Text:
Henry loved his friends. He really, truly did. But it was Halloween. One of the biggest party nights of the year for university students. And yet, for reasons unfathomable to Henry, they had all elected for a quiet night in watching B horror films over joining the rest of campus in their revelry.
Well, it wasn't really unfathomable, per say. Henry actually understood it rather well. He himself didn't particularly care for the loud noise or crowds of uni parties. But drunk students were horny students, and Henry wanted to get laid, dammit.
Pez had patted him on the back and reassured him he could survive one weekend without getting his dick wet. But his soothing tone had rung distinctly more mocking than sympathetic, so there wasn't much Henry could do but relent out of spite.
Their chosen venue for the evening was Nora’s flat. Nora was the latest edition to their small circle, and Pez’s current fixation. She was American and one of the smartest people Henry had ever met, attending Oxford on a free ride to get her Master's in something called mathematical modeling. Henry had politely nodded along while she had explained her course to him. He wouldn't say he was lacking in the intelligence department himself, but he was a bloody literature major, and Nora may as well have been speaking Cantonese for all he understood when she talked about her studies.
She was also, Henry had come to learn, surprisingly superstitious for someone so scientifically minded. When Henry has pointed out his surprise at her interest in the occult, Nora had simply shrugged and said, “magic is actually pretty mathematical,” as if that explained everything.
It did not, in fact, explain anything.
All of that said, Nora had the most extensive collection of shitty horror films and various other spooky accouterments, which made her place the ideal choice for their Halloween movie marathon. They'd made a drinking game out of the bad acting, corny dialogue, and stupid characters. Three movies in Henry, Pez, and Nora were properly buzzed and Bea was laughing at them as much as the films. Henry had to admit he was having so much fun he almost forgot about his initial reluctance.
Then Nora broke out the ouija board.
“Seriously?” Henry asked, eyebrow raised skeptically.
“‘Tis the season,” Nora replied matter-of-factly, “ besides, the hour after midnight is the time to try. Unless we want to wait until 3 am, and at the pace we're going so far, not sure any of us are making it that long.”
“I've never done it before,” Bea’s face was alight with mischief, “let's do it.”
Henry was slightly less convinced. He wasn't sure which outcome seemed less preferable: the ouija board being a load of bollocks and therefore a waste of time (admittedly the more likely outcome), or it actually working and…what? Summoning a ghost or a demon? It was a bit far fetched for him, but he was drunk, and his sister seemed excited about it, so he found himself sitting cross-legged around the coffee table with his friends, all of their fingers pressed to the little plastic planchette.
Nora was rather vague on the details, besides starting with a hello and making sure they said good-bye before they stopped. Other than that, she said, it was best to let whatever might be present drive things rather than trying to force a specific question or interaction.
So Henry closed his eyes and tried to buy into the whole thing, to believe that the slow inching of the planchette was the work of some spirit and not just one of them subconsciously pushing it with their fingers. But his heart just wasn't really in it, and his mind started wandering back to the possibility that he could be getting railed right now instead of performing a fake seance.
Then he felt a chill in the room, a spark of something shooting up his spine so sudden and jarring that he jerked his hands away just as they were reaching the ‘B’ in their good-bye.
Nora was frowning, clearly disappointed. Then Pez declared, “those prudish old ghosts were just intimidated by our collective beauty,” and he and the girls were laughing it off. Henry just stared at them, dumbstruck, because did none of them just feel that?
He could hardly ask, though. Besides not wanting to seem crazy, Henry wasn't even sure what it was he had felt. Surely it must have been his imagination, or a bit of static electricity, or something else equally mundane.
It certainly wasn't the ouija board. That would just be ridiculous.
Henry spent the walk back to his flat feeling the distinct tingling along the back of his neck of someone watching him. He was unsettled by it, but it was easy enough to write the feeling off: he'd been drinking, they'd watched to many horror films, despite the late hour there were plenty of other students still shuffling home or from one party to the next who could have been glancing his way. But loathe as he was to admit it, even privately, he'd gotten in his own head over the ouija board. He was glad to finally be able to shut and lock the door to his flat behind him.
He had most definitely been alone at that point. So he could hardly be blamed when, after washing his face and brushing his teeth, he stepped out of the bathroom only to let out a quite undignified shriek at the sight of a man laying atop his bed.
To be more specific, there was a naked man in his bed. An extraordinarily sexy, naked man. Perhaps the sexiest man Henry had ever seen.
Said man smirked at him, pristine white teeth a lovely contrast against his bronze skin, big, brown eyes sparkling with mischief, and said, “hey, baby.”
“How the bloody hell did you get in here?” Henry asked. He impressed himself with his ability to focus on what was probably the most relevant question, despite the many others floating around in his head. These including but not limited to: how do you possibly look like that , why are you naked, and would you mind terribly if I also got naked and then we could be naked together?
They would get to those. Maybe. Hopefully. Once Henry ascertained that he wasn't some sort of nudist serial killer.
“I came in with you.”
“You most certainly did not.” Henry replied confidently. He was confident because, even if he had somehow managed to pick someone up on his brisk walk across campus, and even if he had even more bizarrely done so without realizing, there was simply no reality in which Henry would have failed to notice this man in his presence.
He honestly looked like something straight out of Henry's raunchiest wet dream. A head of soft, dark curls that Henry was desperate to run his fingers through and tug. Big, brown eyes framed by the thickest, longest eyelashes he'd ever seen. A chiseled jawline. Washboard abs with just the right dusting of chest hair and an homest-to-god vee line. Thick muscular legs coated in fine hair.
And his cock…well, Henry best not think about his cock just now. He needed to stay at least semi-coherent while he figured out how this stranger got into his home. Although the logistics were starting to matter to him less and less.
“Just because you couldn't see me doesn't mean I wasn't there, Sweetheart.”
Henry considered the presence he’d felt all the way home, as if someone was watching him. He felt a pang of dread as he realized this man might actually be some sort of killer or at least have bad intentions for sneaking into Henry's flat. He felt a second pang of dread at just how little the first did to curb his libido.
“So what, you were stalking me then?”
For the first time, Henry seemed to have broken through the man’s composure. Although this really did nothing to alleviate Henry's confusion, and now he just looked…offended? “I think it's hardly fair to call it stalking when you're the one that summoned me.
“I did no such thing!” Henry asserted. It wasn't as though he were offended by the notion, Henry absolutely would have invited this man home with him had he been given the opportunity. But again, he most certainly would have remembered that.
“You sure did,” then the man let out a deep, resigned sigh. Like he'd finally decided that Henry was too thick, or maybe just correctly observed that he was too horny, to figure this out on his own, “With the ouija board.”
Henry blinked. He blinked again. Somehow, the first response that came to mind was, “How do you know about the ouija board?”
The man did not dignify his question with a response. He just fixed Henry with a Look, one that said, “please don't make me explain it again.”
And the thing is, Henry didn't need it explained. He understood the implications. He just didn't believe them.
“So what, you're saying you're some kind of sexy ghost or something?”
“you think I'm sexy?” The man asked with another smirk, as if he didn't fully well know that he was sexy and also that Henry thought so. “But, no. If I were a ghost, I probably wouldn't have been able to leave the building. Mortal tethers, and all that.”
For some reason, Henry continued the conversation as if it was normal, and made sense, and he believed any of it, “If not a ghost then what? A sex demon?”
“Technically the politically correct term is incubus, but you can call me whatever you like, Baby.”
Henry stared at the stranger, searching his face for any indication that this was some kind of joke. He waited for the other shoe to drop. For Pez to jump out from behind a curtain and reveal that this was some sort of prank he'd somehow roped this perfect specimen of a man into playing on Henry. But none of those things happened.
“...You're serious?”
“Serious as a heart attack.”
“But I didn't try to summon anything. I didn't even believe the damn thing would work.”
The man–demon–crossed his arms behind his head and leaned back against Henry's headboard. “Yeah, that's the thing with talking boards, they tend to play real fast and lose with interpreting your intentions.” Another smirk, and he looked positively like the cat that caught the canary. Henry couldn't even find it in himself to be bothered that he was the canary. “Unless of course I'm mistaken and you're not the one who was thinking about how badly you wanted to get dicked down while performing a seance?”
And well, that was definitely Henry.
“No, that uh, that tracks, actually.” He admitted, because what else was he supposed to do? At least his new demon companion didn't seem to put out about being dragged away from his–whatever it was he did–by Henry. “Well, terribly sorry for the mix up. But as you can probably tell I certainly did not intend to summon any demons tonight, so you can feel free to go on your way now.”
“I can't.” He answered plainly.
“What do you mean you can't?”
“You summoned me and you haven't dismissed me. I can't leave until you do.”
“But isn't that the point of saying good-bye on the ouija board…” but Henry's voice trailed off as he said it and he realized his mistake, “...which I didn't do because I pulled my hands away.”
“Now you're getting it, Sweetheart.”
“And I suppose a verbal dismissal won't do the trick?”
“Nope.” He popped the ‘p’ as he said it.
“Damn.”
“Oh come on, it's not really so bad is it?” He was up on his knees now, and started slowly making his way towards Henry at the end of the bed. He took Henry's face in his unfairly large hands, leaned in close so they were just barely not kissing. “I'm just here to give you what you wanted.”
Henry's eyelids fluttered shut. It took all of his willpower to resist closing the distance between their lips. He wanted to blame his desperation on some sort of demonic influence, but he was pretty sure it was just his own body betraying him, “W-won’t you kill me if we do…”
I could think of worse ways to die. Henry's brain supplied treacherously.
“No Baby, I won't kill you,” he chuckled, and he was so close Henry could feel the rumble, “way too much paperwork when I get back downstairs.”
That was just enough to shake Henry out of the moment, he pulled back so he could look the demon in the eye, “Ok, now you must be joking.”
He was grinning now, a playful twinkle in his eyes, “You got me, just kidding.” A pause. “About the paperwork anyway. I really won't kill you, promise.”
“And what reason do I have to trust you?”
He seemed to be done being patient. He leaned back into Henry's space, but fully closed the distance this time, pressed open-mouthed kisses along his jawline, and scraped his teeth gently along the sensitive skin just below his ear. His breath ghosted along the shell of Henry's ear when he spoke again, “You don't, really. Guess you just have to decide if it's worth the risk.”
Henry knew it was stupid, and reckless, and insane. But he was also very sure that it was worth the risk.
Henry woke up the next morning with the hangover of a lifetime.
His entire body ached. It was painful, but also sort of satisfying. Like the way his body ached after a really intense workout. Or like he'd had the best sex of his life.
He could do without the headache, though.
Henry groaned, rolling over onto his stomach and pressing his face into the pillow to block out the encroaching sunlight.
“Yeah, sorry about the hangover. that's my bad.”
Henry shot abruptly upright, and immediately regretted it.
“You're still here.” He observed, once the room had stopped spinning.
His–the–demon was laying on his side atop the covers, hand under his head as he gazed at Henry. He was still naked. He looked somehow even better than he had last night, sunlight highlighting his hair and glowing in the aftermath of sex.
It set in fully, in that moment, that Henry had allowed an incubus to fuck him and feed off of him the night before with absolutely no regard for his own safety. Christ, Henry might have actually taken his sluttiness too far this time.
“We've been over this, Sweetheart, I can't leave.”
“Well I just thought you might have, I don't know, been released once you fulfilled your purpose.”
“Again, not a ghost. I'm here until you send me away properly.”
Henry sighed. So, he was still stuck with a sex demon. Probably not the worst thing that could have happened to him.
“Well, um, I suppose I should apologize for the inconvenience then? And get your name, if you're going to be sticking around for a bit.”
Henry flushed, embarrassed at the realization that it hadn't even occurred to him to ask for a name before now. He'd really put the cart before the horse last night.
“You can call me Alex.” He answered, smirking like he knew exactly what was going through Henry's head.
Henry arched a dubious eyebrow, “You're a demon named Alex ?”
“Oh, Sweetheart, you really went into that seance half-cocked with no idea what you were doing, huh?”
Henry frowned. He absolutely had no idea what he'd been doing, but he still didn't appreciate the patronizing tone. He thought his lack of preparedness was justified, given he hadn't even believed in seances at the time.
He might not be an occult expert, but he was a literature major, and that did involve reading a fair amount of religiously inspired texts. He racked his brain for what he knew about demons from that.
“You don't want me to know your actual name because I could use it to control you.”
“damn, he's got beauty and brains.”
Henry rolled his eyes, but he couldn't quite help but smile. He was probably just teasing, but it was hard not to feel good about being called beautiful by a literal embodiment of sex appeal.
“So, I'm guessing to dismiss you I'll need to borrow the ouija board from Nora?”
There was a part of him, a tiny voice in the back of his head, saying, or he could stay here . But logically Henry knew that wasn't possible. First of all, Alex wasn't just some stray animal he'd picked up on the side of the road and brought home. He was a sentient being that most likely did not want to be stuck here with Henry. Furthermore, Henry really did feel like death warmed over this morning, and it definitely wasn't just the alcohol he'd drank last night; Alex had already admitted as much. This was clearly not sustainable.
But somehow Henry was still feeling a pang of regret at just the thought of sending him away.
Alex shook his head, “ouija board isn't going to do you much good without your witchy friend.”
“I’m sorry, what ?”
“The board’s just a hunk of plastic on its own. You really think Hasbro is mass producing occult paraphernalia and selling it to kids?” Alex paused as if considering his own words before adding, “Actually you're right, that sounds like exactly the sort of thing a soulless, money-hungry corporation would do. Good thing for all of us they haven't figured out how, huh?”
Henry was floundering, “No–well, I mean yes, I suppose it makes sense when you put it like that. But…can we go back to what you said about me having a witchy friend?”
“Yeah, what'd you say her name was, Nora? She actually made the seance happen, the board was just a vessel for it.”
“Does Nora know that she did that?”
Alex shrugged, “Don't ask me. I'm an incubus, not a mind reader.”
“Right.” Henry released a deep breath, “I suppose I'm going to need to ask for Nora’s help then.”
The idea, admittedly, held very little appeal for Henry. Negative appeal, even. He'd already been vaguely dreading coming up with an excuse for why he wanted to use the ouija board again. Involving Nora would mean actually telling Nora what he'd done, and Henry didn't think he could imagine anything more embarrassing.
“Best chance of success you're going to want everyone who was there the first time, but yeah, she at least is definitely going to need to be involved.”
Henry groaned, pinching the bridge of his knows as his headache gave an unpleasant thrib against his skull. It was starting to feel like Alex was out on this Earth specifically to torture him. Which, given the fact that he was a demon, was actually quite possible.
“Alright. Well, how soon do we need to get this done, do you reckon?” Henry asked, hoping he could at least delay the inevitable long enough to find a way for his ego to actually survive this ordeal.
Alex’s eyes gleamed. He was obviously far too pleased with the question, “Why, you hoping for a repeat performance first?”
Yep, definitely here for Henry's torture.
Alex did not wait for Henry to respond. When he continued, he was uncharacteristically serious, “We’ve got time, but I'm going to have to keep feeding from you as long as I'm here. As you can probably already tell, that's going to wear on you. You won't be able to do this forever.”
At least it would be an enjoyable sort of torture.
“So, let me make sure I have this correct. You were so ferociously randy on Halloween night that you've accidentally conjured up a sex demon?”
“He's an incubus.” Henry mumbled defeatedly, not having any actually valid defense for himself.
He'd decide on a bit of a soft launch for the reveal of his shame to everyone by just telling Pez first. Pez had already seen Henry at his most shameful, and while this was probably a new low, his best mate had never judged him before. They were now discussing his depravity over mimosas in a secluded corner of their favorite brunch place.
“Of course, incubus.” Pez looked absolutely delighted about the whole situation. While Henry couldn't say he was surprised by the reaction, he was still worried what it might mean for him. “I must start by offering my most sincerest apologies, Hazza; never again shall I underestimate your desperate need for a good shag.”
“I hate you so much.” Henry retorted, zero bite behind the words. Henry put his forehead down on the table in front of him, resigned to wallowing in his own patheticness.
“So?”
Henry lifted his head up just enough so he could look at Pez, “So what?”
“So, was it as good a shag as you dreamed of?”
Henry sat back up. Even as embarrassed as he was, he couldn't even pretend to downplay his answer to that question. “It was so beyond good, I don't think there are words in the English language for it. You should see him, Pez. He's so beautiful, so perfect, it's almost…”
“Inhuman?” Pez supplied when Henry hesitated.
And that was the rub. Alex was, obviously, not human. But the thing was…he acted so human it was easy to forget. Henry knew it was probably a facade, that he was a demon and manipulating humans was probably his whole shtick. But it didn't stop him from yearning.
Pez must have seen the conflict on Henry's face, having always been able to read him like a book. His expression softened. “You're a grown-up, Haz, and you know I trust you to be able to make your own choices. But please be careful, won't you dear? I do still worry.”
“I know, thanks Pez. I promise I will.”
Henry was not careful.
He wanted to insist that it wasn't his fault that Alex was so irresistible, that he couldn't possibly be expected to say ‘no’ to his advances. Except, Alex always seemed to wait until Henry came to him first.
And the further problem was, it wasn't even just the (admittedly mind-blowing) sex that Henry was hung up on. He liked Alex. Why wouldn't he, when the other was charming, and funny, and kind?
Henry understood the possibility, even likelihood, that none of it was real. That Alex knew how to be whatever the person in front of him found most charming, most wanted. That he knew he didn't have to come on to Henry, because he'd done what he needed to do to ensure Henry would one to him.
But the idea that Alex was just manipulating and using him simply didn't sit right. When Henry would wake up feeling drained the morning after, Alex would bring him a bottle of water and a tube of Liquid IV. It was a little thing, but one that Henry had a hard time attributing to self interest on Alex’s part–if Alex's goal in being kind to him was getting him into bed and feeding off of him, why would he bother with caring for him after he'd gotten what he wanted? One morning Henry even woke up to find Alex cooking him a full English breakfast.
So Henry was smitten, not to mention fully sated.
It made it easy to ignore the looming need to talk to Nora and his sister, and send Alex away. So he ignored it, and he let Alex fuck him into oblivion every night. And after a week, Henry was really feeling it.
He was tired . Henry was no stranger to chronic insomnia, or the bone deep exhaustion that came from days straight of barely sleeping. But somehow, it was even worse when he was sleeping like the dead and still waking up feeling like he hadn't slept at all. His entire body ached like he had a nasty case of the flu. And he was struggling to concentrate in class with his brain as foggy as it was.
Notably, Alex was also looking worse than for the wear. He was still impeccably, impossibly hot, and someone who had spent the better part of a week in increasingly intimate situations with him probably wouldn't have even noticed anything was wrong. But Henry could see the subtle signs, the way Alex’s eyes weren't quite as bright as they had been. He was obviously holding back, not taking as much as he needed For Henry's sake. Yet more proof that his goodness wasn't only self-serving.
Henry was but a simple, very gay man. He couldn't let go of this perfect man, consequences be damned.
The ultimate evidence that Alex cared for Henry in return came the night Alex finally came to him first. Henry had just returned home from his final class of the afternoon, and a nap was in his immediate future even though he knew from experience it wouldn't make any difference. He was sitting on the edge of his bed removing his shoes when Alex sat down beside him.
Henry leaned into him, ready for wherever this was going to go, but Alex just placed an unexpectedly gentle kiss on the top of his head.
“Henry, you can't keep doing this baby.” He said softly, what Henry thought might be a hint of sadness in his voice. “It's time to call your friend.”
Henry knew he was right, even if he didn't like it.
Strictly speaking, Henry still hadn't actually called Nora, having Pez handle things in his stead. He was just too tired, and maybe too sad.
So now they were all sitting around Nora's living room again, Alex added to their group. Nora was peppering him with questions while Bea sat off to the side, watching him with obvious suspicion. Alex was more fully clothed than he had been essentially the entire time Henry had known him. But even in his just shy of too tight black t-shirt, and jeans that perfectly hugged his ass, he still looked unfairly delectable.
They already had the ouija board set up on Nora’s coffee table. Henry stared at it with a sense of dread.
“Hey Alex, remember how you said the ouija board interprets our intentions?” Henry asked.
“Yes.”
“Even if those intentions are subconscious?”
“Yes.”
“So if, hypothetically, on some deeper level, I didn’t want you to go–”
“Then this would almost definitely fail, yes.”
The room fell silent. It was deafening.
“Henry,” Alex continued, once again unexpectedly serious. “You need to want me to go. It’s going to kill you if we keep this up. This is not a metaphor or a euphemism, you will literally die .”
“I understand that.” Henry answered. But he couldn’t help the way he felt, he was too afraid to say. “I’m just wondering whether there might be any other option?”
Alex hesitated. He almost seemed nervous –the emotion looked out of place on him. “Well, there is , but–”
“Of course there is,” Bea cut him off, the distrust obvious in her tone, “and of course you’ve waited until the final hour to mention it, so Henry is under as much pressure as possible.”
“I didn’t bring it up before because I wasn’t going to bring it up at all.” Alex retorted, but he didn’t sound very angry, like he understood Bea’s concern, “But I am a demon, so if you wanted we could make a deal. It would make our connection more symbiotic, so to speak. But it would also make it permanent.”
Henry was failing to see a downside to this option.
“...What sort of deal?”
“Hen, please think about this,” Bea continued before Alex could answer. “He is a demon. He’s manipulating you, it’s what they do.”
Henry knew Bea was looking out for him, and he appreciated that. By all means, he should listen to her, but that interpretation of Alex just didn’t feel right.
Alex frowned. “And your knowledge of demons comes from who exactly? Religious nuts who are so afraid of anything they consider evil they won’t even read a Harry Potter book, let alone actually talk to an actual demon?”
That seemed to humble Bea, who didn’t answer straight away.
“To be fair, they might be on to something with Harry Potter, that Rowling lady is at least as evil as any demon I’ve ever met,” Alex continued, “And yes, obviously I also stand to gain something if we make a deal. That something being easy access to your sexual energy, and being able to stay on Earth. What you get is up to you. It could be anything from a really great hair day to something much bigger than that?”
“You could have him get rid of your batty old gran,” Pez chimed in, sounding absolutely tickled with this most recent development.
“That might be a bit much,” Henry chuckled awkwardly, turning back to Alex, “Could you actually…”
“Kill someone? Of course I could. I’m a demon, not a genie, I can do whatever you want.
Alex shrugged, like the idea wasn’t at all a big deal to him, “But, actions do have consequences, and even if I’m the one actually doing the deed, you’re the one they’re more likely to come back around to. So I wouldn’t necessarily recommend that option.”
Henry nodded. That was fine, he hadn’t been seriously considering it anyway. There may be no love lost between him and his gran, but he didn’t want her death on his conscience, no matter how indirectly.
“I could make sure she has real shit luck for the rest of her natural life,” Alex suggested, a conspiratorial look in his eye, “less karmically impactful, and in my experience often worse for the recipient. Or you could have that good hair day. It’s up to you. And if you don’t want it, then I drop it. But, for what it’s worth…I also would like to stay.”
He sounded nervous again, pointedly wasn’t looking Henry in the eye. If Henry had any doubt left that Alex was being genuine with him, the look on his face in that moment would have erased it.
Henry looked over to Bea, who he realized was watching him. He recognized the intensity in ger gaze, like she was really trying to see right into his heart. For the first time that night her expression softened. “You really want this, don’t you?”
Henry was resolute when he answered, “Yes, I really do.”
Bea smiled at him, and he knew that was good enough for her. That was the last encouragement Henry needed.”
“You know, my gran has spent over twenty years making me miserable at every opportunity. It seems only fair that I return the favor.”
Alex looked surprised at first, like he really hadn’t been expecting Henry to accept. Then his more characteristic smirk returned, “I can make that happen. ‘Fraid we’ve wasted everyone else’s time, though. Henry and I can sort this one out on our own from here.”
Nora sighed wistfully, like this was the most romantic scene she had ever witnessed. “Damn, I wish I had a vengeful sex demon.”
“I could introduce you to my sister, if you want.” Alex answered plainly. Nora looked far too pleased with this idea.
They had ended up performing a seance, in the end. Then Henry, Alex, and Bea left Nora and Alex’s sister to their own devices. Pez notably did not leave, and Henry decided he would prefer not to know, so he didn’t ask.
Alex had explained that he and Henry would need to “seal the deal” together, in a word, so that was obviously best left until they were alone. When they arrived back at Henry’s flat he figured they would get right to it, so he promptly moved to make his way to the bedroom. He’d only made it a step or two before Alex took hold of his wrist, stopping him.
He turned to face Alex, who faltered for a moment before saying, “Listen, I want you to know that I’m serious about this, and that I would never hurt you, no matter what.”
Henry smiled fondly, “I already do know that, Love.”
“And I appreciate that you trust me with that, more than you could ever know. But, I want you to be sure , so…”
Alex leaned forward, and whispered something in Henry’s ear. It was very clearly not English, and at first Henry didn’t understand what Alex was trying to tell him. Then it hit him.
Alex had told him his real name.
