Work Text:
Another cap of thunder sounded and Elise huddles further into the bed with whimper.
She hated storms. They reminded her too much of memories Mori had made her forget. Of gunpowder and smoke and blood.
So much blood.
Dazai’s head pokes over the edge of her bunk.
“You know I can hear you even with my headphones in, right?” he looks unimpressed and she glares at him.
“Shut up. You’re the one who forbade me from going to Mori like I usually do,” she huffs and he rolls his eyes.
“Yeah, because he’s not been getting much sleep recently and I refuse to let you interrupt what little he does get because of your stupid fears. He’s annoying when he’s sleep deprived.”
The last part is a clear lie, Dazai’s attempt to hide his concern for Mori. Elise doesn’t call him out on it because he could just call her out as well. Afterall, she could have easily ignored Dazai’s threats and gone to Mori but she hadn’t. Because the truth is she also cares about him.
Not that she would ever admit it. Not unless they were in the direst of circumstances.
Instead she chooses to point out something else.
“You don’t like storms either,” she reminds and he rolls his eyes again. Rude.
“I don’t like storms because they’re wet and make my bandages and clothes uncomfortable. Plus, the thunder is annoying. I’m not scared of them, unlike you.”
Elise doesn’t have a retort for that so she just glares until a another clap of thunder makes itself known and she ducks under the blankets again with a squeek.
Dazai sighs.
“How about this,” he suggests, “You come down here on my bunk and we can watch one movie of your choice on my laptop.”
She mulls it over. The thought of watching one of her favorite movies is extremely appealing. But. . .
“What’s in it for you?”
But Dazai isn’t usually this nice. Not without an ulterior motive, even if it’s extremely stupid and clearly a farce, like the one he just gave about Mori.
“For you to shut up,” is the blunt answer.
“Deal.”
She ends up tossing down her pillows and plushies to Dazai including the blue whale that he loves to steal. Mori keeps offering to buy him his own but he claims the entire fun is stealing them from Elise.
She then scrambles down the ladder and they end up squeezed together on Dazai’s bunk with her pillows in between to avoid skin contact so he doesn’t accidently use his ability on her. His laptop is propped up on said pillows and they each take an earbud both because Mori is a lightsleeper and because Dazai hates watching movies on his laptop without earbuds.
True to his word, Dazai lets Elise put on a movie of her choice which ends up being Tinker Bell and the Secret of the Wings. As is custom for him, Dazai makes snarky comments about the movie and Elise whacks him with a plushie and the two bicker. At some point near the end of the movie, Elise ends up drifting off to sleep, with Dazai eventually following.
In the morning, when Mori pokes his head into their room to find them fast asleep, still in the same bunk surrounded by plushies, he smiles and takes a few pictures before quietly leaving to start the coffee.
