Life was great! The boys of Karasuno volleyball club were still on cloud nine the Wednesday after they won the game against Shiratorizawa and became the Miyagi prefecture representatives for the Spring National tournament, afternoon practice was just about to finish and the boys were doing their cooldown stretches when the gym door banged open and Takeda-sensei rushed in, out of breath.
“Sawamura-kun! Gather everyone around, we have a problem!” he panted out clutching his knees.
At the sudden commotion everyone quickly gathered around their teacher waiting to see what the problem could be.
“What is it Take-cha… I mean Takeda-sensei” asked Tanaka and got a glare from Ennoshita, while Kinoshita and Narita were snickering behind them.
“We have been so focused on training that the volleyball club forgot to hand in their culture festival plans, which takes place this weekend and as a punishment the Vice Principal decided we cannot do a sport demonstration display like last year, we have to open a cosplay café and worst of all we have to accept the theater club’s leftover costumes.”
“This is definitely payback for the toupee incident” sighed Sugawara.
“We agreed to never mention that!” hissed Daichi while the ones who witnessed it were snickering into their fists.
“This is a disaster! The whole school will laugh at us!” fretted Asahi and Nishinoya was trying to pacify him. The chaos was increasing by the minute. The first years were just standing by not knowing what’s happening. Kageyama was completely clueless while Hinata and Yamaguchi had a basic understanding of the situation but didn’t know why it would be a disaster, Tsukishima was just ignoring the whole situation while Yachi was having a meltdown ala Asahi style next to Kiyoko, who was calmly taking in the chaos.
“That’s enough!” Shouted Daichi. “As we are tight on time, we should brainstorm on what we will need and where will we get them from. Any ideas guys?"
“As we are forced to open a café, we will need chairs and tables” said Suga and Kyoko started writing down the suggestions in her notebook.
“We will need drinks and some kind of cake or cookies to serve.” Said Ennoshita
“Shimizu, could you and Yachi go and talk to the theater club about the leftover costumes, sometimes tomorrow?” asked Suga “And also, we will have to put some money together to buy supplies like paper cups and napkins.” Slowly they compiled the list of supplies and they handed out tasks. They asked every member if they could talk to their parents to bake some cookies or cake to sell in the café and they roughly estimated how much they have to spend on the drinks, tableware with the help of coach Ukai. The second years were responsible for the tables and chairs, Daichi and Suga would do the shopping while Asahi would help the girls pick up and check the costumes the first years were responsible to make some signs and clean the gym and prepare an area near the entrance for the café and other odd jobs the older students came up for them. They spent their Thursday and Friday morning practice keeping in shape and the afternoon practices with their respective tasks. Friday night they locked the gym that was transformed into a small cafe and a preparation area, all that was left the next day is to get into their costumes and survive Saturday.
Bright and early as always, although later than usual, Shouyou arrived at school, only to notice that he was alone, the gym and changing room still locked. He carefully untied the box from his bike and sat down on the steps. Shortly after his team started showing up one by one and they started setting up. The last to arrive were the girls and Asahi, bringing the clean and ironed costumes.
“I hope you have something cool in there for me.” Shouted Nishinoya.
“We have exactly 4 costumes, that were somewhat usable so we will have to set the schedule up that we have 4 waiters all the time and 2 responsible for the preparation of orders and the rest of the team can have free time util their shift.” Said Kiyoko calmly, directing Asahi to take the costumes into the changing room. “Asahi and I will help you put them on.”
“Who will be in the first shift?” asked Hinata excitedly.
“Suga has the list and he will be here with Takeda-sensei in about 10 minutes. They needed to go to the teacher’s lounge for something.” Said Daichi, putting down the box he was carrying. “Yachi, could you look at the cake and cookies everyone brought and count them, so we know what’s on stock? Everyone, bring your offerings to the preparation area.” They all got to work with the deserts.
When Suga arrived, he announced the schedule for the groups. “Now in the morning or first group we have the third years plus Ennoshita as waiters and first years on snack duty and the remaining second years are free until 12pm, then we switch second years are servers third years in the kitchen and first years free, then at 3pm first years as servers, second on snack duty and third years and Enno have their free time.” Schedule explained, the third years went to the changing room to get dressed and the second years went off to look around, he first years awkwardly stood around until it was time to open the doors for the guests.
The costumes were a hit with the visiting schoolmates. Daichi was dressed as the prince from Cinderella, Asahi was a really awkward and shy pirate with his hair let down under the hat, Ennoshita was dressed as a doctor and Suga as a butler with a tailcoat. Their recent win meant everyone wanted to come and see them so they were all quite busy.
Time passed by quickly and the second years switched with the third and the first years went on their break. The last the first years seen it, Noya put on Suga’s butler outfit, Tanaka went for the pirate suit, Narita became a doctor and Kinoshita the prince.
The second shift was running smoothly and nearing its end. There was a large group of second year girls, they even asked if two tables could be pushed together for them, which Kinnoshita and Narita gladly did. Tanaka quickly took their order and asked Noya to help carry the large number of drinks back to the girls.
“Of course I would help you, bro. I am the best man for the task” as he said this, he pumped his fists into the air and knocked the tray out of Asahi’s hands and the milk coffee landed on Noya’s back.
Ennoshita just shook his head at the next bout of chaos.
Shortly before 3PM all 4 first year arrived to see the second years sauntering out the changing room with Yachi and Kiyoko waiting outside. Noya and Tanaka barely holding their laughter. Odd, but not unusual.
“Tsukishima, you’re the tallest you get the pirate costume, Yamaguchi you get the medic outfit and Kageyama you dress as the prince. Go, go, go. We don’t have much time.” Ordered the older manager and pushed the boys into the changing room. Yachi stopped Hinata from entering with the rest.
“The king gets a regal outfit. Fitting!” came Tsukishima’s remark from inside and you could hear the bickering as the door closed behind them.
"Uhm, Yachi-san? Don’t I have to change too?” asked the ginger confused while looking at the panicking blond.
“Hi-Hinata-kun, there has been an accident with the butler costume, that you were supposed to wear.” Said the blond nervously while pushing the ginger to the other door. It was the girls/managers changing room, that the volleyball club shared with other sport club managers.
“Eh?! Then what am I going to wear? Should I put a sheet on and dress as a ghost?”
“Don’t worry Hinata-kun. There was a spear costume lent to us by the theater club, but it was rather small, so it would have only fit Nishinoya and you.” Said Kiyoko, closing the door behind them. “As Nishinoya has already finished his shift and consequently ruined the butler outfit, we have to go with plan B. Now strip!”
“EEEhh!?!” scream the ginger and the two girls pounced on him to help him undress quickly and forced him into the new outfit.
“Can’t I just go as a ghost? I can still serve drinks like that!” whined the ginger, pulling on his well fitted, but short outfit.
“No, you know we have to follow the Vice Principal’s rules or he will cut club funding.” Said Kiyoko firmly and pushed the ginger out the door and marched him down the stairs and into the gym. The loud cacophony that reigned inside stopped, as if someone pushed paused on every person inside.
There stood the short ginger haired boy between the two managers dressed in a rather short, black and white maid outfit, that you would expect from a Tokyo maid café, but not the countryside Karasuno high’s smaller gym’s volleyball club café. Hair fluffy and skirt puffy with proper Mary-Jane shoes and tight high stockings, Hinata Shouyou blinked at everyone, then a huge blush spread over his whole body and he screamed “why”. Then the spell broke and chaos descended on the gym again.
You see at the moment all the visitors at the volley café were volleyball players. Sometime during the morning, a relative of a Karasuno student invited her friend from her school via text, who was watching the Aoba Johsai volleyball team having their Saturday morning training and as it happened to be she was talking to the team captain and mentioned that Karasuno has their culture day festival today. Oikawa being the cunning but petty person that he was, covertly asked about the volleyball team’s activity and found out that they are having a cosplay café. He then roped Kindaichi and Kunimi into visiting after practice to laugh at Kageyama and Iwaizumi tagged along to somewhat prevent major chaos. That would have been the end of it, if Oikawa wasn’t feeling extra petty after the tournament and he sent a couple of messages to some other chaotic and/or petty players like Tendo and Futakuchi. Who in turn dragged their available teammates with them, namely, Ushijima, Goshiki, and Aone respectively.
On the other hand, Shouyou did mention to Kenma on their regular chatting time Wednesday evening about the punishment from the Vice Principal and Kuroo happened to see the content of the message and immediately messaged Bokuto, then they both jumped on Daichi trough chat to find out the details, so here they are Saturday afternoon at Karasuno and they dragged Kenma and Akaashi with them, just for the fun of it.
So back to the present chaos enfolding, people laughing, loudly calling for Hinata using various names and some even trying to approach the said ginger. Daichi and Ennoshita were trying to make everyone quiet down, Asahi, Yamaguchi and Yachi were panicking, Suga and Kiyoko were extremely amused, Tendo and Oikawa were almost touching the skirt and so on so forth, and our little ginger exploded.
“All of you shut up!” shouted Hinata on top of his lungs “You,” he pointed at the first years “get to work and take the customers’ orders! Second year kitchen, third years out! An you dear customers sit and enjoy your tea or get out.” Said Shouyou with a dangerous smile. Nobody moved as they were all frozen as deer in headlight “Now! Move it!” came the final command and everyone scrambled to comply.
As if the last couple of minutes hasn’t happened Shouyou plastered a big grin onto his face and went to talk to Kenma.
“Hi Kenma, Akaashi-san! Not that I’m not happy to see you, but I wasn’t expecting you to come. Didn’t you have to prepare for prelims for the Nationals?”
“Hey Shouyou!” Kenma smiled at the ginger
“Hi Hinata-kun” came the quiet greeting from Fukurodani’s setter, but was drowned out by Bokuto.
“Agaashi! My disciple is ignoring me” whined the overgrown owl.
“Chibi-chan is angry” grinned Kuroo
“Bokuto-san, Kuroo-san.” Shouyou looked at them with a sharp smile “Shouldn’t you be in Tokyo training? I was expecting more from the captains of Fukurodani and Nekoma.”
“Agaashiii, Hinata is mean to me!”
“Bokuto-san, behave.”
“Chibi-chan is feisty today!” grinned Kuroo.
“Kenma, Akaashi-san, would you like to order something? I can recommend the apple pie cookies my mum made.”
“That sound lovely, Hinata-kun with some tea.”
“Same for me Shouyou!” answered Kenma quietly. With that Hinata started to walk away.
“Hey! Chibi-chan, what about us.” Whined Kuroo, while Bokuto sank under the table.
“You can have some water Kuroo-san. You need to keep hydrated, like a good athlete.” The ginger gave the blackhead a dangers smile, then went to get the order to the kitchen. Kenma couldn’t hold it anymore and snorted at his oldest friend’s dismissal. Soon after Shouyou was back with the goods and he brought a consolidation cookie for Bokuto to cheer him up a bit. After all the ginger crow didn’t want to cause trouble to Akaashi-san. Which meant that Kuroo and Bokuto now moved on to trying to get Tsukishima to react to them.
Next, he went to the Date tech table, that was just served by Yamaguchi. He then exchanged the usual silent greeting with Aone and completely ignored Futakuchi, who started huffing and puffing next to his quiet team mate.
Shouyou stirred clear of the Seijo table, because Kageyama was giving off dangerous vibes, instead he went to the Shiratorizawa table.
“Ushijima-san what chaos brings you here to our humble school?”
“Hinata Shouyou, from the concrete! Tendou heard from Oikawa, that Karasuno has their culture festival and that we should attend. Goshiki-kun tagged along.” Said the stoic volleyball player.
“Wakatoshi-kun, we came to have fun!” exclaimed Tendou, Goshiki looked like he had something to say too, but he was ignored.
Hinata shook his head then took their order and went on about his duties. The rest of the first years got their fair share of teasing and annoying their visitors back, especially Tsukishima and Kageyama were targeted by their sempai from other schools. Shouyou caught a glimpse of Kuroo and Bokuto trying to cage in his blond team mate in, just to be stopped by Akaashi and Kenma. In the end he had a good laugh. Even with these complications life was great!
