Work Text:

saying goodbye to harry is the hardest thing you will ever have to do.

it sounds overdramatic but as you sit here with him the heartache is all-consuming, pressing down on you as you meet his gaze. his expression is serious, his eyes carrying the heavy finality of what he came here to do. there's no anger, no accusations—just the silent weight of an ending neither of you wants to acknowledge.

"so," you say softly, breaking the silence that has filled your living room. your voice feels foreign, wavering in a way you didn't expect. harry turns to you, his eyes heavy with sorrow, yet there's a quiet, heartbreaking resolve. the realization stings: he's already accepted this. you try to swallow down the bitterness that rises within you, the part of you that wants to scream that after everything you've been through together, he won't even try. he won't fight for you. maybe it's hypocritical of you to expect him to considering you haven't tried either but the ache of knowing that this is the end, without a single attempt to hold onto what you shared, cuts deeper than you thought it would.

harry sighs, shoulders slumping, his lips pulling into a faint, trembling frown. "so," he echoes, his voice barely a whisper. the small sound of it is like a crack in the silence, a fissure in the solid wall you've tried to build against the pain. you watch as he looks down as if he can't bear to see the sadness in your eyes that mirrored his own.

you want to say something—anything—to make him stay. you want to remind him of everything you've shared, the late nights spent tangled together whispering secrets that no one else knew but you. you want to tell him that you memorized every freckle and blemish on his face, every nervous habit he still has yet to break, every way he tries to conceal his emotions from the world but never could from you. but the words are lodged in your throat, stuck between your pride and the painful understanding that he's already chosen to let go.

harry seems to know you're holding back too. His eyes flicker up to yours and for a brief moment, you see a glimpse of something raw, almost like regret but he looks away just as quickly, letting that unspoken moment end like your relationship.

you take a shaky breath, your fingers brushing against his hand, hesitating before you pull back. the quiet hurts, the absence of an argument, the lack of blame. it's like you're both clinging to the edges of something that has already slipped through your fingers.

when he finally reaches for you, his hand cups your face with a gentleness that makes you want to break. you close your eyes, leaning into the familiar warmth of his touch. it's such a simple gesture, one you know so well. however, tonight it feels like a final farewell, like he's trying to commit you to memory one last time.

his thumb brushes your cheek and when you open your eyes, you see tears glistening in his own, though he tries to blink them away. you feel tears descending your cheeks but he catches them without a word, his hand lingering as though he can't bear to let go.

he leans in, pressing his lips to yours in a chaste kiss filled with all the love you're both too afraid to speak aloud. the kiss isn't about desire, it's about memory, about knowing each other so well that you don't need words. it's a gentle, aching reminder of everything you had and everything you're losing. his lips are warm and familiar; the quiet consolation of the action nearly undoes you.

your heart clenches painfully as you pull back, feeling the loss even before you open your eyes. harry's hand drops from your face, his touch fading and you see the sadness etched into every line of his expression. he swallows, his eyes fixed on you as though he's trying to memorize every detail of your face and bracing himself to live without you.

you both sit there, neither moving, your breaths mingling in the quiet. then, with one last glance, he stands, his hand slipping from yours completely, leaving your fingers empty and cold. he pauses at the door, looking back one final time. his eyes meet yours with a silent apology he'll never say nor do you want to hear it.

he's gone before you can take another breath in, the door closing softly behind him. you sit in silence, the ache settling deep within you, knowing that this is how it ends: quietly, painfully, and without a fight.
