The Fastest Way to a Man's Heart

Summary:

ˏˋ°•*⁀➷🕷

• .

One of life's greatest mysteries: What was the fastest way to a man's heart?

Miguel O'Hara was a stoic man. He lost his temper often, lashing out and yelling at other Spiders and lesser employees at his HQ in his universe. The only people even allowed near him were Jessica Drew and Peter B. Parker. And he already despised Jess for persuading him to allow civilian workers from his universe to work at HQ.

So what happens when a sweet civilian worker unknowingly wanders into his office on one of his off days?

Not what you'd think.

Miguel O'Hara was decidedly in a bad mood today.

A slow, early morning followed by mission after mission; possibly getting his ass handed to him by a particularly powerful Green Goblin anomaly. To top it all off, he was drowning in work, sifting through orange screens in an attempt to balance his disaster of a work day with his sanity.

All in all, people knew to avoid their boss at all costs when he was clearly having a tough day.

Until...

The softest knock on his office door made Miguel's furrowed brow furrow even more. He almost hadn't heard it, the gentle rapping against his door a stark contrast to the stressed pulsing of his head. After another knock brought him out of his thoughts, he heard his own voice reach out into the silence.

"Come in."

Outside of his office, a young woman inhaled deeply, gripping the folder in her arms with a nervous air about her. Miki was an... an errand girl of sorts. Ever since she started working here, the woman was determined to help out wherever she could. This was the biggest job she'd ever had after all, so she was dead-set on making a good impression.

And that meant on everyone.

She thought it unfair that her boss she'd never actually had an actual conversation with was so... attractive. She'd seen him only in passing, and every time she did, she grew more infatuated.

It was the way he held himself: tall and strong, not only in physical terms but also emotionally and mentally.

After hearing the authoritative 'come in' from the other side of the office door, the woman stepped forward and pushed the door open, peering in with an absorbed look in her eyes. "...Mr. O'Hara sir?"

Miguel paused and moved his screens out of the way with a wave of his hand when he heard her... soft, hushed voice.

He silently watched her; from the way she awkwardly shifted her weight to one foot to her holding that small folder against her chest.

And god, was she absolutely tiny compared to him. Soft eyes, polite smile, the slightest little tilt of her head to the side...

Miguel cleared his throat, reminding himself that this was just some random employee. "...What?"

To Miki, his voice was... impossibly deep and clear. He had an air of authority around him, and it made a slight coiling feeling start forming in her stomach.

She gave an awkward, lopsided smile to him as she responded. "R... Right, sorry for the intrusion sir...! Um, Mrs. Drew asked if I could run this file up to you?"

Holding out the file to him, she began stepping closer to his desk. Miguel narrowed his eyes, analyzing her with a judgmental yet undeniably curious look. This woman was... definitely no Spider. No, she looked too soft and timid; too easy-going to be any sort of Spider. Was she one of those civilian workers that Jess forced asked him to hire?

Miguel looked her up and down before taking the files from her hand.

Definitely not a Spider-Person, he commented offhandedly to himself, before leaning back in his chair to sift through the folder handed to him.

He couldn't help but let out an irritated breath the more he read. Another mindless report? That was the fifth one just today. Miguel shut the folder, placing it on the desk with a murmured 'joderme' under his breath.

Miguel was close to losing it. He needed to calm himself down, and quick.

Instinctively, his eyes trailed to the small woman still standing politely in front of him. He grumbled, standing and rounding his desk as if he was ready to leave. "You... what are you still doing here?"

She looked up at him, bewildered. This man was... absolutely enormous when he stood; a hulking, muscular unit of a man. Though, her mind did wander to how it might feel to run a hand against his chest.

Quickly realizing that she was losing her cool, the woman shook herself of her stupor with a shaky, panicked smile.

"Oh! Yes, um-... I'm leaving now!... bye!"

Miguel narrowed his eyes, noting her skittish behavior as she practically tripped over herself rushing out of his office. What was her problem?

He let out a stressed sigh, pinching the wrinkle of skin between his brows.

Just another day at the Spider Society...

For him at least.

The woman from before sped down the hallway, her cheeks tinted a soft pink.

Miki heard it. No, not the clacking of her Mary Jane's against the hallway floors. Not the distant chatter of Spider-Men. No, Miki could hear the thumping of her heart. It vibrated in her ears, the sound shivering up and down her spine.

She stopped a little ways down the hallway, face pale.

Oh no.

Miki placed a trembling hand on her chest, right above her heart.

...Oh, she was definitely fucked.
