The Devil You Don't

Summary:

What's better than the devil you know?

The devil you don't.

Notes:

completely flying by the seat of my pants with this y'all. I honestly wanted to make a Rook/Solas fic yet somehow like one or two tiktoks about Elgar'nan pushed me to just mash this out In a day. depending on how it's received this could become a long multi-chapter or just be a few (not saying this to pressure people into engaging just thought i'd lay out my possible plan) I'm already working on like two other fics but hey might as well start another. i have ideas... hm.. a lot of it will be first time writing experiences for me so please give me some grace haha.
also, I don't think I'll ever give Rook a name in this but it is a female Rook who will most likely be elven should the subject come up. early chapters may be subject to change later to fix spelling or story mistakes. hope you enjoy!!

Chapter Text

Invasion of the mind was becoming a new fad in Thedas it seemed.
Solas was quite the trendsetter.
When he prodded her mind she always made sure to bite back.
It was once on his volitation at the ritual site, now every time afterward it felt more and more like he was the one with his mind in a tangle. Rook enjoyed the power balance between the two of them. He could raise his prison of rocks as high as he wanted but in the end, only one of them ended their talks by leaving that dull place.

They often say- better the devil you know, than the devil you don't.
This saying loses meaning when you can't quite make out the nature of either devil. Solas is predictable in the way he speaks, carries himself, and the snarky comments he makes. His internal plans are unknown to all, unfortunately. One can guess that he would like to help but one never can guess when that help ends. If Solas is anything it is abrupt. He has a flare for the dramatic, the tragic, and where his limits lie Rook is sure even the gods don't know.
The gods did know one thing though. They knew Rook was a precious piece in their strange game and that she was a demise or something they would triumph.
How exactly this triumph would happen, was mixed between the two of them.

Ghilan’nain’s blight knew no bounds. It pulsed, sought, writhed, and thrashed until the world gave itself over. She knew how to weaponize nature's gifts and took full advantage. Seeking within the structures of the earth a new world built just of and for her.

Elgar’nan had been.
Quiet.

He had been described as calculating, not exactly cool, but calculating. There was a chance that years locked away dimmed the fire and allowed his patience to grow beyond the ambitions he and his younger counterparts once had. If Rook looked away for even a moment she feared he would take the chance to shake the board.
So distracted was she, with keeping her eyes on these imaginary pieces, that she had not thought that perhaps Elgar’nan was playing a different game entirely.
