Learning through Fanfiction

Summary:

For my portfolio assignment, I decided to explore each week’s content through characters from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Fanfiction has always been my coping mechanism when times are difficult, and it felt fitting that such emotionally laden topics be explored through that same lens. I’ve always had a hard time understanding social cues, and it’s through both watching television and writing fanfiction that I have slowly improved my social skills. I find that fanfiction in particular, allows me to more easily explore the minute ways of communicating through body language and facial expressions. By having to take my time writing out and learning about the different ways characters express themselves through their body movements, I’ve been able to translate that into my own life, slowly learning to better comprehend when I’ve said something wrong or hurt someone’s feelings and it gives me a chance to recognize and change my wrongdoings.

Chapter 1: Week 1 - Class Introductions

Summary:

For my introduction, I decided to jump straight into the conversation surrounding abortion, but from varied perspectives as was discussed in this week’s class. This week features three original characters, as well as a character from Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Whedon, 1997), and focuses on reproductive rights, but specifically abortion, and some of the arguments surrounding abortion as well, though all four characters are fairly liberal, and all four are queer. The show itself takes place in California from the late 90s until the early 2000s, and around that time there was a proposed bill about parental consent needing to be obtained before minors could have an abortion.

Chapter Text

It was impossible to focus on the conversation. Tierney was trying her best, but all she could think about was that tiny little life, growing in her body. Angelica was, well- Angelica was going to kill her if she found out. They’d only just patched up their relationship, how was Tierney supposed to explain that she was pregnant from a one-night-stand she’d had just days after their break-up. It didn’t help that Jenny and Lucille were currently arguing over fucking reproductive rights of all things. Jenny was being, well, herself, and arguing with Luci about whether or not teenagers should be able to get abortions without parental consent. It was a topic that hit far too close to home for Tierney’s liking- her current circumstances aside. She was lucky enough to have turned eighteen just days after finding out she was pregnant, but the thought of her parents having to know? It would’ve ruined her family, and Tierney just couldn’t-

“Earth to Tierney?” Angelica called out, fixing her with a strange look that Tierney couldn’t quite place.

“What?”

“Should teenagers have to get their parent’s consent to get an abortion?” Jenny asked, eyes narrowed as if to say, “ Answer carefully.”

Tierney went to answer, already forming some thoughts about age mattering in these cases, but when she went to speak, the words she’d been hiding spewed out of her mouth. “I’m pregnant.”

“No shit, Sherlock.” Luci piped up, eyes zeroing in on Tierney. “I figured that out like, three weeks ago.”

Angelica’s face was like ice, frozen solid as she stared blankly at Tierney. Jenny glanced between Tierney and Ange, lips parting as she came to the only logical conclusion in her mind. “Um… Luci, can you help me in the kitchen? Now, Luci.”

The moment they were out of the room, Tierney cast a silencing spell. The last thing she needed was for Jenny and Luci to hear the argument that was surely about to go down. Tierney went to speak, to apologise, to say something- anything- that could make this better, but Angelica cut her off. “How long have you known?” Her voice crackled, barely more than a whisper.

Tierney stared at the floor, taking a beat before responding. “A month.”

“Were you ever going to tell me?” Tierney shook her head in response. She’d already scheduled the abortion, she just wanted everything to go back to the way it was before. Before Angelica was attacked, before their break-up, before that awful three weeks she’d spent all alone, taking strangers into her bed to cope with the loss of the greatest love she’d ever had. “ Why? Tierney, I- We’re too grown up for this. Please. Why would you do it all on your own?”

“I’ve done it before.” And there it was, the one story Tierney had never told anyone before, spilling from her lips. “I just, I thought that if you knew, you might leave again. Not about then, but this time. I thought if I told you I was pregnant you would hate me.”

Tears threatened to spill over the damn in Tierney’s eyes, and she cursed herself. Why couldn’t she hold it together for one fucking conversation? She’d always been a crier, but sometimes it drove her crazy.
