Work Text:
Percy was hanging out on the beach at Camp Half-Blood when Annabeth stormed over.
“I can’t believe I missed this before !
- What’s happening, what did you miss?
- Did you know that in the myths, Heracles killed Chiron?”
Percy got up “He what?
- Well he was doing his tasks right? And Chiron helped him, because he is nice like that. Well long story short, he drank wine that belonged to the centaurs, and when they came after him because of it, he shot at them with his bow, and he had dipped his arrows in hydra’s blood, so any wound was fatal. And he shot Chiron. By accident, but he shot him all the same!
- What the Hades? Chiron obviously didn’t die, but what happened?”
Percy got an idea. He turned toward the ocean and said “Hey dad, we’ve got some questions about something that happened in Ancient Greece, do you think you could answer them for us?”
Poseidon appeared next to his son, and asked him what questions they had. Percy summarized what Annabeth had found out, and asked what actually happened. Poseidon started talking : “Well, Heracles did shoot Chiron with a poisoned arrow, and I do know that even if the poison wasn’t fatal to him, Chiron spent the next two centuries in agony.”
At that, Percy was up in arms : “Two centuries of pain because Heracles was a thief? That’s so awful”
Annabeth paled “Percy...I already met Heracles. He is always on Olympus for the meetings, and he introduced himself as the gods of heroes. He always want to talk with Chiron, and Chiron is always uncomfortable in his presence but none of us understood why!”
Percy was fuming : “Let’s spread the word. Next winter holidays, everyone come back to camp, and we all go to Olympus. We won’t let Heracles force his presence on Chiron”
Poseidon, seeing that Percy and Annabeth were focused on their plan, went back to Atlantis.
---------------------Time Skip : Winter Solstice------------------------------------------------------------------
Chiron was, of course, suspicious when the entire camp insisted on coming to Olympus for the meeting. He was even more suspicious when all the campers stayed by his side instead of going to explore Olympus. When he saw Heracles come toward him to once again talk to him as if they were friends, he tensed. And suddenly all of his campers were between him and Heracles, hissing at the latter. Heracles stopped walking and started talking : “Hey, little dudes, what’s going on? I just wanna catch up with Chiron, nothing more!” Percy was the one who answered, because of course he was : “And what makes you think that Chiron wants to talk with you, after you made him suffer?”. A soft sound of understanding escaped Chiron, because of course that’s what it was. He was about to tell them that he could bear it, that they didn’t need to do that when Annabeth shot him a look that screamed “don’t even think about it”. The gods were starting to look at them, confused (except for Poseidon who, for some reason, seemed to already know what was going on). Heracles was angry now “Careful how you speak to me, little dude. I’m a god, and you would do well to remember that”. Percy scoffed “Yeah? You’re supposed to be god of heroes. I am a hero, and I don’t recognize you as my god. I don’t recognize you as my protector and I sure as hell don’t recognize you as a hero!”. There was a silence for a few seconds, then “Me neither”. The son of Hades had decided to make his opinion known. “The dead talks, you know. And the stories those that died by your hand have to say are not stories of heroism, far from it.”. Another “Me neither” sounded. A child of Apollo this time. Until all of camp was expressing their displeasure. Things reached a head when a new camper, who was maybe 6 years old, said “Yeah! If someone was to be god of heroes, it should be Percy”. At that, the son of Poseidon turned around with an air of betrayal on his face. Of all people, it was Clarisse who spoke up “He has a point you know. You always look out for us. You’re a protector.” Percy felt the title anchor itself to him. He was ascending. Dionysos, who had reacted in a split second, grabbed him and disappeared. Heracles began burning. The campers began freaking out, and Poseidon was the one who intervened. “Be calm. Percy is ascending. He can’t be near mortals during his ascension, as it would be dangerous to them. As to what happened to Heracles… Voluntarily or not, you ripped his title from him. That has consequences.” After that, everyone waited for Percy to return, which happened a couple hours later. He entered the throne room, Dionysos behind him. The god of wine then said “All hail Percy Jackson, God of demigods and loyalty, Protector of heroes”.
