AITA for telling my roommate to stop giving treats to my cats?

Relationships

Hi, I [23M] have been living with my roommate [23M] for a few years now. We knew each other from school and always got along very well.

We used to live together in dorms and when we graduated and both started to work in the same city we decided to keep living together to save on rent. It's been years at this point and I honestly can't imagine living without him. Not many people, pretty much zero, get me like he does, know when to give me space and when to push me to socialize. He is funny, clean enough, a bit loud but always listens when I ask him to tone it down (I have insomnia) and all in all a great roommate.

I'm saying all of this because I want to make sure you guys realize I like him and this is not something I'm annoyed with because he is a bad roommate or something.

But I really really hate it when he gives treats to my cats.

I got them about 6 months ago. We talked about it and he was fine with it. Actually he encouraged it. I always wanted cats and was finally in a place where I could afford them and he was the one to push me to get two. Officially they are my cats but because we live together he takes care of them sometimes as well. It all worked great for a time, until I realized I really don't like it when he gives them treats. It's not that he is giving them the wrong kind or something and I also don't mind when he feeds them (I'm actually thankful because I work weird shifts and this way they get fed more regularly) but the treats irk me.

I know it sounds ridiculous and believe me, rereading what I wrote really drives the point home, but I just don't like it. He uses this baby voice and scratches them and coos at them and scrunches up his face and it drives me up the wall.

I really tried to keep myself together, but last night I just snapped and told him he should stop giving them treats and he looked really sad. I tried to explain it to him, but I couldn't really - because it's ridiculous and now I feel bad. He hasn't talked to me all day and now I'm sitting in my room, asking myself if I'm an asshole.

Does anybody else feel that way about their pets? Is it okay to ask that of my roommate even if I can't explain it?

nta. OP is in the right. Cats need a healthy and balanced diet and while treats can be included in that, they definitely shouldnt be too much of them. Also make sure to not feed them the cheap stuff for their regular food. Balance it between dry pebbles (GRAINFREE!) and wet food (also grain and sugar free). Of course the best way would be to barf (I do) them, but I get that not everyone cares about their pets as much.
