Work Text:

Being driven through the gates of Rome was a shameful sensation.

Coming from a foreign land, by now a Roman province near Germania, you had been forced to watch your landsmen die in guarding your home, lament their deaths, and leave behind what you knew – to be presented to an aspiring Roman general as slave and concubine. You were a prize of war. Your people scattered across the Roman Empire.

When you were first presented to your new master at dusk in his villa, surrounded by nature, water and green vegetation, your heart had sunken at the sight of him. The air smelled of olives and fresh bread, a sharp contrast to the dusty barracks where you had been kept. The Roman general, though rough looking, was of gracious nature, kind and soft spoken. His dark hair curled against his tanned skin, and his face, though weathered by war, carried an unexpected kindness in its eyes. But the broad-shouldered man with the confident gait of a Roman soldier awoke terrors from the war you had witnessed inside of you.

Marcus Acacius. You had heard his name whispered in fear and awe among your people – not just a name anymore, but a man of relentless ambition. He sat before you now, his rough-hewn features softened by the golden light of an oil lamp.

“You are... a gift,” he said, his Latin slow and deliberate, as if choosing words you might understand.

Your throat tightened. “A slave,” you replied in your own tongue, voice trembling.

His brow furrowed slightly. “Perhaps. But I do not see chains.”

You glanced down, the wrists bare for the first time in weeks. The gesture was meaningless, you thought bitterly; freedom was more than the absence of metal.

The general rose from his seat and approached you, his movements unhurried. You tensed, your body bracing for what you had long dreaded. On the way to these outskirts of Rome, you had witnessed the treatment of involuntary concubines and whores, of women forced into slavery. Fondling their breasts on the market, haggling prices, hitting and marking those disobedient.

The screams in the night of those sold. You had been picked out by the Emperors for their war general and thus had been spared the open market. Now, it was your time to scream.

Instead of groping you, he stopped a respectful distance away. Seeing the fear in your eyes, he knelt slightly to meet your gaze.

“What is your name?” he asked, his voice almost carrying something soft.

You blinked. No Roman had asked you that since the capture.

“Y/N,” you whispered, head hanging low.

“Y/N,” he repeated, as if committing it to memory. “You are safe here.”

Safe. The word felt heavy on your tongue, like a lie, a concept you could scarcely believe.

“You belong to me,” he continued, his tone matter-of-fact but lacking malice. “As is the Emperors will. But I am not a cruel man. You will have food, clothes, a bed of your own. I will not touch you unless you ask it of me.”

He knelt down fully, regret now forming in his eyes. “And I am sorry for what you had to undergo.”

The weight of his words struck your heart. You stared at him, searching his face for something that hinted deceit, but found none. Why? You wanted to ask him, but you lacked the word he would understand. He tilted his head, trying to read the questions you had in your eyes.

“Rome has taken enough from you”, he explained, his expression thoughtful.

The days that followed were bearable. You were given a room in the villa, a modest space with a soft bed and a small window that overlooked the garden. The other servants treated you with cautious kindness, as if following their master’s lead. Your duties were light – Marcus seemed to have little interest in treating you as a servant – and you found yourself often at leisure, wandering the gardens or watching the household’s rhythms.

At first, you avoided him, speaking only when spoken to and keeping your distance. Marcus Acacius was not what you had imagined a Roman general to be. He spent his mornings training in the courtyard, his impressive form moving with precision and purpose, or sometimes even working on his fields, but in the evenings, he was almost contemplative. He would sit by the fire with a scroll in hand or converse with his steward in low, measured tones. True to his word, he kept his distance to you, merely raising an eyebrow when you crossed the garden to steal a glance. He spoke to you only in kindness and never approached your room uninvited. Instead, you gradually began to notice the subtle ways in which he tried to make you comfortable.

One evening, as you sat quietly in a corner of the atrium, Marcus entered with a small bundle of parchment. He glanced at you, his expression unreadable, before setting the bundle down on a nearby table.

“For you,” he said.

You stared at the papers, then at him. “What is this?”, you said in broken Latin, the bits you had learned in the kitchen.

“Writing lessons,” he said, his tone as casual as if he were offering you bread. “You are educated, are you not?”

You nodded slowly, watching his face intently.

“Then we’ll begin tomorrow.”

You wanted to refuse out of pride, but curiosity won out when the following morning, he emerged from his chambers with willful eyes and you found yourself seated across from him, his broad hands guiding you through the phrases as if he had all the patience in the world.

Over time, your conversations began to stretch beyond the lessons. He asked about your homeland, the family you had lost, your childhood. You answered cautiously, but his interest seemed genuine, and after some time, you found yourself sharing pieces of your past – memories of green hills, of songs your mother used to sing, of the little dog that had followed you through the village.

Marcus listened intently, his dark eyes softening at your memories. He shared stories of his own: tales of campaigns in foreign lands, of his boyhood in the countryside, of his dreams for a Rome that could be more than war and conquest.

“Do you ever regret it?” you asked him one evening, the words escaping out of hurt and curiosity. “What Rome has done to my people?”

He was silent for a moment, his gaze fixed on the firelight.

“Regret is a luxury for men who can undo their past,” he said at last, his tone heavy. “I don’t have that luxury. What I regret... is not always knowing whether the lives I’ve taken were worth the peace I sought.”

You watched his face, answering in silence.

“But yes,” he added faintly. “I regret the suffering we bring. Yet I also believe Rome can bring order where there was chaos. It’s a hard balance, Y/N.”

You wanted to hate his answer, but you saw the raw honesty in his face. It was enough to plant the first fragile seed of trust in your heart.

“But I will not add any more suffering”, he added with a sigh.

As the months passed, you found yourself drawn to Marcus in ways you hadn’t anticipated. The way he treated his household - with fairness, even compassion. The way he spoke to the servants by name, ensuring they were well-fed and warm. The way he carried himself with quiet dignity, never flaunting his power. His manners and soft diligence, it made you want to be close to him. You felt pity whenever he returned from the imperial palace with headache and furrowed brows, feeling the strange want to sooth it somehow. When he had visitors and late night talks by the fireplace with men and women dressed in colourful cloth, you wanted to sit beside him and listen to his stories. Sometimes, you even felt jealousy for the attentiveness he had for others, though there were no grounds for it.

You secretly began to seek his presence, lingering in the courtyard during his training sessions, him throwing a smile at you as you watched, or joining him on walks through the gardens. You talked of philosophy, of politics, of the lives you had lived before fate had brought you together. And slowly, there were no walls left around you.

One afternoon, as you walked through the garden talking about the flowers he brought from Persia, he stopped and turned to you.

“Y/N,” he said, his voice hesitant. “Do you hate me?”

The question caught you off guard. You looked at him funnily, this man who had every right to treat you as a possession, yet chose to treat you as an equal, in every way he could.
“No,” you stated, your cheeks flushing. “Never. Not after witnessing the man that you are.”

Surprise, as well as flattery, were visible on his strained handsome face. His brown eyes searched yours, and for the first time, you felt a flutter of something that had nothing to do with fear.
“I am surprised to hear,” he mouthed, brushing over his beard. “I am relieved. And glad.”

With a light gesture of his hand he bowed to you, signaling he felt the same respect – or favor – for you. Beneath the olive trees, he looked content.

“Do you ever think about your future, Y/N?”

You sat down on the stones by the pond, watching the many fish quickly vanish between the lilypads. He joined you, not looking at the fish he so adored.

“My future? I am a captive.”

He nodded. “You’ve lived as a captive. But here, in this villa, you are free to choose your path. I hope I made that clear.”

You frowned, unsure of what he was asking. “And what path would you have me choose?”

His eyes softened. “One that makes you happy.”

The words sent a jolt through your chest. For so long, your life had been dictated by others, by the whims of war and the chains of slavery. The idea of choosing happiness felt… almost impossible. But as you looked at Marcus, you began to wonder if happiness could be found here, with him.

That evening, you found Marcus sitting alone in his private chamber, his elbow resting on the arm of his chair and his chin propped against his knuckles. The firelight cast shadows across his face, highlighting the deep lines etched into his skin by years of command. His other hand gripped the pommel of his gladius, the worn leather smooth beneath his fingers. The room was silent, save for the crackling of the fire, but his mind churned with unspoken thoughts. He stared into the flames, and looking at his clenched jaw you knew he was wrestling with the things he had told you about; the ghosts of the lives he had taken, the cities he had razed, and the fragile peace he now sought to preserve.

When he noticed you standing outside with a carafe of wine, he extended a hand to you, his expression softening.

“Y/N. Come in, please. Would you accompany me, if it is not too far into the night?”, he asked, his voice carrying warmth.

“It would be my pleasure, Dominus”, you faintly smiled while entering his chambers and organizing his desk to place the wine.

“Please, do not call me that”, he asked of you, his hands brushing over his furrowed brows. “I wish you would call me Marcus.”

The fire crackled softly, casting a warm, golden light that danced across the walls.

“Marcus,” you said, testing the sound of his name. It felt strange on your tongue, intimate in a way that made your heart quicken.

He turned to you, a slow, genuine smile spreading across his face. “Yes,” he said, his voice softer now. “That is better.”

He dragged another chair towards the table with one hand. “Would you like to have a glass of wine with me?”

You nodded with a smile, your gaze fixed on the tousled hair that curled against his forehead, one brown curl falling into his eyes. He watched you as you took your seat and then poured the wine himself. His movements were unhurried, deliberate, as though savoring the moment.

When he handed you the goblet, his fingers brushed against yours briefly, the roughness of his calloused hands a stark contrast to the gentleness of the gesture. You held his gaze for a heartbeat longer than intended before lowering your eyes to the shimmering liquid.

Marcus sank into his chair, resting his forearm on the armrest as he turned his head to study you. His expression was unreadable, his dark eyes flickering in the firelight. It was a look you had come to recognize – a blend of curiosity and quiet intensity, as though he was wondering you.

“You seem troubled tonight,” you said gently, breaking the silence.

He let out a low sigh, the sound weighted with exhaustion. “I often am,” he admitted, swirling the wine in his glass. “But it’s nothing you need to concern yourself with.”

You tilted your head, your fingers tightening around your own goblet. “Perhaps not, but if I am to sit here, sharing your wine, surely I can share a little of your burden as well.”

A faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips, and he glanced away, his gaze settling on the fire. “You’re bolder than most,” he murmured, almost to himself. “Bolder than when you came here. I like to see it.”

You took a sip of the wine, the warmth of it spreading through you as you watched him. He was a man of contradictions. The rough planes of his face, shadowed by stubble, seemed softer in the glow of the firelight, but your eyes had grown kinder on him and you couldn’t trust your judgment anymore regarding his beauty. The way he leaned back in his chair, his long legs stretched out before him, gave the illusion of ease. But you could see the tension in his shoulders, the weight he carried like armor he could never quite remove.

For a while, the two of you sat and conversed about the day, the wine loosening the edges of your thoughts. The fire popped occasionally, filling the gaps in your conversation with its comforting presence. You liked to watch the play of light on Marcus’s face but noted the faint crease in his brow that remained even in this moment of respite.

“I saw you sitting here most evenings, contemplating” you admitted finally, the words hanging in the room. His jaw tightened, and he stared into the flames as though searching for answers there. You set your goblet down.

“I can see your sorrow, Marcus. What can I do?”

He didn’t ask what you meant. Slowly, tentatively, you reached out and placed a hand on his arm. His gaze flicked to yours, and for a moment, he looked startled, as though he hadn’t expected the touch. Then he moved.

“I fear nothing can be done,” he said with a heavy sigh. “Like I said, I cannot undo the past, and I cannot know if the impact of my actions is of the good nature I intend before I carry them out. In the end, I am a servant, too.”

“But you try,” you said gently. “You try to make it worth something. That is more than most men would do.”

For a long moment, Marcus remained still. Then, with a slow exhale, he placed his hand over yours. His touch was warm, his grip firm yet reassuring.

“I don’t deserve your kindness,” he murmured.

“You do,” you said with a faint smile. “But even if not, I’ll give it anyway.”

The firelight danced between you, casting shadows that seemed to blur the line between what was and what could be. Marcus leaned into your touch, shaking his head as the corner of his mouth turned into a smile. “You are dangerous.”

You arched a brow, a teasing glint in your eyes. “Because I dare to speak my mind?”

“Because you make me want to listen,” he said, his voice low and rough, but there was no mistaking the warmth behind his words.

As the evening deepened, you stayed by his side, and in the quiet of his private chamber, something unspoken passed between you – a fragile feeling that neither of you dared to name. The silence between you lingered, warm and heavy, the kind of silence that didn’t need filling. Your hand still rested on Marcus’s arm, his fingers lightly covering yours. His thumb traced absent circles against your skin, a gesture so subtle you might not have noticed if your heart wasn’t already thrumming in your chest.

After a moment, he stood, his movements slow and deliberate, as though unwilling to break the spell of the evening. His hand left yours as he crossed to the window, the wine forgotten on the table. The faint moonlight spilled across his frame, outlining the broad strength of his shoulders and the way his tunic clung to him.

“It is late. I do not want to delay you from sleep”, he said, staring into the garden.

You watched him for a moment, your chest tightening with a mix of emotions. Then, without fully thinking, you rose and moved to stand beside him.

The view from the window was breathtaking—the rolling hills beyond the villa, the gardens bathed in silver light. But your gaze wasn’t on the scenery. It was on him.

“Marcus,” you said softly, your voice barely above a whisper.

He turned to you, his brow furrowing slightly, as though surprised to find you so close. His eyes, dark and unfathomable, searched yours for a moment that stretched between heartbeats, unsure if you had only rose in duty. When he realized you had approached him deliberately, his expression changed to something welcoming.

“Yes?”

“I think you deserve more kindness than you believe,” you said, the genuineness of your words mirroring in your eyes. “More than you give yourself credit for.”

His eyes searched yours, and for a moment, you thought he might pull away. Instead, he lifted a hand to your face, his touch so gentle it made your chest ache. He waited a few moments, studying your face for approval before his thumb brushed along your cheekbone, then traced the line of your jaw before his hand settled at the nape of your neck. The warmth of his touch sent a shiver through you.

“You do this to me,” he murmured, his voice low and rough. “You make me want to believe it.”

He looked like a sculpture brought to life – the sharp cut of his jaw, the proud angle of his nose, dipped in slight shadow cast by the firelight dancing over the strong lines of his face. Stubble that softened his otherwise commanding features. His brown eyes filled with such tenderness you wanted to fall on your knees and marvel at them only.

You extended your hand to brush over the side of his face, and he cupped your cheek gently in response, his thumb grazing your skin. His touch was as hesitant as yours, as though giving you every chance to pull away. But you didn’t. Instead, you leaned into his hand, your eyes fluttering shut at the touch.

His gaze dipped to your lips as his breath hitched. “Tell me if this is too much,” he whispered, his voice barely audible.

You shook your head, your heart feeling things you would not have imagined some weeks ago. “It’s not,” you said softly, stepping even closer.

With hooded eyes, he admired your form.

“May I give you a kiss?”, he whispered, his sharp nose inches away from yours. You moved your weight to your toes in response, extending to reach his reddened, wine-stained lips from where you stood.

With that, he leaned down, his movements slow and deliberate. When his lips met yours, it was like the world fell away. He was tender, unhurried, his kiss a question rather than a demand. His other hand found your waist, anchoring you as though afraid you might vanish if he let go.

You responded in kind, your hands coming up to rest against his chest. The feel of his heartbeat beneath your palms grounded you, its steady rhythm echoing your own. The kiss deepened, his hesitance melting into a quiet fervor that spoke of longing held back for too long. As you kissed away, you felt immersed by his perfume and the sweet touch of broad hands wandering carefully over your body.

When you gently pulled apart, your breaths mingling in the space between you, he settled his chin to rest on your forehead. His hands remained on your waist, their grip gentle.

“You undo me,” he murmured, his voice raw.

You smiled, your fingers lightly brushing the edges of his toga. “You undo me,” you mirrored his confession.

He let out a small laugh, the sound full of warmth. “Perhaps we undo each other.”

The night stretched on in soft words and gentle touches, neither of you in a hurry to break the fragile magic of the moment. The last firelight crackled in the background as the moonlight wrapped around you both like a promise.

Marcus’s hand rested lightly against your back, his fingers tracing slow, deliberate patterns over the fabric of your tunic.

“Y/N” he murmured, tasting your name in a new delight, his voice a deep, velvet whisper that sent a shiver through you. You tilted your head up to meet his gaze, your breath catching at the intensity in his dark eyes. He was watching you intently, his heavy lids drooping in the darkened room.

“Kiss me again“, you whispered against his heaving chest, so close you were nearly buried in him. He released a hand from your waist, his fingers trailing up to gently cradle your jaw.

“You know I could never deny you,” Marcus smiled. He tilted your head slightly, his thumb brushing the corner of your mouth before he leaned in again, capturing your lips in another unhurried kiss. This time, there was more certainty, his earlier hesitation melting away. His lips moved against yours with a quiet intensity, as though he wanted to commit every detail of this moment to memory. His mouth was warm, and he tasted faintly of wine, his kiss deepening. With the sweetness of his lips, it felt like every drop of tension was leaving your body immediately and being replaced by a growing excitement in your stomach. You leaned into his body, giving into his tender touch. The heat of it grew, but still, there was no urgency – only a quiet, burning tenderness.

His hands moved to your waist, pulling you closer until you were pressed against him. You could feel the steady thrum of his heartbeat, its rhythm matching the rush of your own. Your hands found their way to his chest, sliding over the broad expanse of muscle and the slight roughness of his tunic.

“Tell me to stop,” he suddenly panted, his voice low and ragged. His forehead pressed against yours, his breath warm against your skin. Your fingers curled into the fabric of his tunic.

“Don’t stop,” you said softly, your voice somehow steady despite the wild fluttering in your chest.

He let out a low groan, his restraint slipping as his hands moved with more confidence. You sensed his desire growing, feeling the rise and fall of his breathing, his heart beating strong against your palms. His other hand moved to the small of your back, pulling you into him with a tenderness that belied his strength. He tugged at the edge of your tunic, his fingers brushing against the skin of your waist. The touch sent a spark through you, and you gasped softly, your hands clutching at his shoulders to steady yourself.

“Undo me fully”, you gently pleaded against him when your lips parted from his to breathe. The air seemed to shift, growing heavier with the unspoken emotions between you.

“Tell me you want this. Tell me I’m not dreaming. Because I’ve dreamed of you, Y/N – dreamed of this,” he murmured against your lips, his voice filled with quiet reverence. He didn’t want to rush you into anything, but his voice also carried something hopeful, the wine having sweetened his senses. You moved to smile at him.

"I want this. I want you" you answered too quickly, the wine loosening your tongue.

“I don’t deserve this,” he groaned to himself, his nose brushing yours.

“You do,” you whispered, your hands moving to cup his face. You ran your thumbs along the strong lines of his jaw, marveling at the rough texture of his stubble and the warmth of his skin. “You deserve everything, Marcus.”

He kissed you again, his movements growing bolder, but never losing their gentleness. His hands explored your form, each touch careful and deliberate, as though he were memorizing the curve of your body. You felt the world slipping away, leaving only the warmth of his embrace and the way he made you feel seen, cherished, adored.

Marcus’s every touch spoke of devotion, his kiss a promise that this moment was about more than desire – It was about the trust you had given him and the love he was beginning to feel in return.

“Carry me to bed”, you breathed. He obliged immediately, rising to pick your small body up and into his arms. Sitting you down on the bed gently, he remained to remove the thick first layer of his fabric before turning back to you.

“If you’re mine tonight, I will make you feel the sweetest pleasures”, Marcus said, looking at you lying on the bed. “I will be your willing servant.” The words send tingles down your spine in anticipation.

When he moved onto the bed, propping himself over you to not crush your body with his weight, a muscular arm scooped itself under you to hold you close while the other one buried itself in your hair as he connected your lips for a sweet, sensual kiss.

You moved underneath him, trying to feel as much of his body on yours as possible, when he removed his hand from your hair to tug at your tunic. He looked up at you with the sweetest eyes, waiting for your approval once more.

“Please”, you moaned, and he was under it. You felt stubble against your sensitive skin, kissing away on your belly and down to your core. He pushed your tunic up and over your head to let you witness what he was doing, tenderly kissing you down there and causing soft exclamations to escape your lips. You felt the wetness dripping between your legs.

When he lazily stroked one finger against your folds, you shuddered underneath him.

“Does it feel good?”, he smiled up at you, immersed in his doings.

“Marcus, please”, you managed to say in pleasure. He went back down with his mouth, his big thumb finding a spot in your folds that send sparks through your whole body when he circled over it. You let out a moan, eager to feel more. He chuckled, kissing you there once more without dipping into you, brushing over the sweet spot with his angular nose. He only paused to quickly remove his shirt, revealing his athletic body. When he came up to stroke your hair away from your face, his athletic form rubbing against your exposed skin, you felt something thick and hard pressing against you.

“The next part might give you some discomfort at first. I can only ease it with kisses. Please, tell me when I hurt you.”

You nodded, bracing yourself. Marcus didn’t rush, placing a few kisses around your face and stroking over your body in such sweetness that your tensed body eased into his touch. With his knee, he spread your legs open, positioning himself above you.

“My dear”, he moaned at the first touch, only brushing against your entrance lightly. He moved back and forth lightly, only connecting to your wetness and then moving back again, leaving you tickled and craving for more. You wanted him to immerse himself into you, push all the way in, but he only brushed his tip against you. You understood his hesitance when he suddenly entered a few millimeters deeper and the stretch stung. Your body jolted and he paused, his lips connecting to your jaw to distract you.

“Focus on my lips”, he whispered reassuringly, hovering over your mouth. When he connected to you, you wrapped your arms around his muscular back, the pain not too sharp when you felt the soft movement of his lips against yours. He pushed in lightly, and this time, it was mixed with pleasure from the thought of his body over yours, the position, the excitement to feel a man where he fit you. He pushed in slightly, then left you again, his hips circling wonderfully over yours as he kissed away on your face. When he heard you moan, he pushed in a bit more, and the pleasurable feeling grew. It still hurt as you adjusted to his length, but it didn’t matter as his fingers were back between your legs, caressing where you most wanted him.

He moved to look at your eyes, watching you curl underneath him. You lifted your gaze to meet his, letting your eyes convey what your voice could not. His lips curved into the faintest smile, one that softened the hard edges of his face as he looked down at you with fondness.

When he entered you, your head fell back into the soft sheets in overwhelming stimulation. He caught you with his broad hand, holding you as if you were something fragile.

“I’ve never known it could feel… like this”, you panted as he pushed into you again, his eyes never leaving yours. “I want you, Marcus. I want to feel you.”

His breath hitched as your hands slid down his naked body, pulling him closer, your bodies fitting together as if they had always been meant to. Your name left his lips in a low, breathless murmur before he pushed into you once more, his hips clashing into you again and again.

“Oh Y/N”, he praised, biting his lips as you met his movements. You let him glide into you fully, tugging at his brown curls lightly to hear him moan, his lips pressed to your chest. He kissed you there, nibbling at the soft skin and leaving you breathless underneath him. He looked so beautiful in the shimmery moonlight, a man made to be carved into marble.

Now stroking over his hair, you connected your lips to his collarbone. The muscles there were tense as his arms supported him above you, a workout in itself. You wished for him to lay on you but lost every thought when his body moved so close it brushed against your sweet spot, once, twice, sending you into heaven.

Marcus felt your body tense up and tightened his grip around you, mirroring his exact movements in an attempt to push you over the edge.

“Let go, my dear”, he simpered against your ear, nuzzling into your hair with his big nose. Feeling him against your neck, so close, mixed with the pleasure his body brought between your legs, you couldn’t hold it in anymore. With a last thrust, a flood of pleasure overcame you, leaving you gasping and panting his name against his chest as he rode out your high, holding you through it. Feeling you tense up around him and hearing your desperate words in his ear made him weak in his knees, challenging the composure he held onto to take care of you. He let out a long moan before coming himself, sinking into you and spilling inside, his control fading away as the high fogged his mind. Another wave of ecstasy overcame you when you felt the sweet warmth spread inside of you. He came down on your body, panting heavily.

You leaned against the soft sheets as he used the last of his strength to fall down beside you, lifting his weight from your small form. His arm draped across your back, his fingers brushing your shoulder tenderly. It was a protective, almost instinctual gesture that made your chest tighten.

As the fire burned low, casting the room in shadows, you rested your head against his chest. It was still heaving from your touch, as was yours. Marcus held you as though you were something precious, something he would never take for granted, brushing over your skin in mindless strokes. Tiredness crept over you, and before you could realize, your eyes fluttered shut and you fell into a long dream.

The next day, you woke up to an empty bed. The servants already worked avidly, telling you the general was working today and had left the villa at dawn. You tidied his room and joined the servants until the evening, when your master returned home without you having noticed.

Beneath the soft glow of the moon, Marcus leaned against the marble balustrade of the villa’s terrace, his tunic dusted with the dirt of the fields where he had spent the morning working alongside his servants. His hands were streaked with soil, and a smudge of dirt marred his cheek. Yet when you stepped into view, he straightened, his face breaking into a grin that made him look years younger. You stood a few feet away, the folds of your simple tunic catching the night breeze. His usually stoic expression softened as he watched you, his eyes filled with a tenderness he rarely allowed himself to show. When you turned and caught his gaze, a faint smile broke across his lips, and he crossed the distance between you in a few easy strides.
He extended a hand to you, his grip firm but gentle as he buried his hands in your long hair and pulled you close. As he gently tucked a stray lock behind your ear, his rough fingers lingering against your skin, he remembered the state of his hands and clothes now pressed against your clean form and stepped away.

“Forgive me, I am full of dust from the fields”, he apologized, looking at his palms.

“The fruits of labor”, you chuckled, leaning back into him. His hands immediately wrapped around you once more. “Make me messy, I do not care.”

He smiled down at you, his angular nose inches away from your face. “You’re beautiful,” he murmured, his voice low and steady, as though the words were meant only for you and the stars above. The roughness of his exterior seemed to soften in these moments. His deep brown eyes, framed by thick lashes, carried a warmth that contrasted with his otherwise stern features, as if your presence brought him a kind of peace that battle never could. As his head dipped down to reach you, his face brushed against yours in a delicate way. Closing your eyes, you extended your head to meet his lips.

For a moment, he hesitated. His hands – broad and calloused – rested on your tunic, his fingers moving carefully and tracing its edge, as if grounding himself. He was a man of war, accustomed to command and the simplicity of orders. But with you, there was no conquest. Only the fragile hope that you might see him not as a master, not even as a Roman, but as the man he was.

“May I?” Marcus asked, his voice warm and deep. “I do not wish to force this onto you.”

You glanced up, a faint blush blooming on your cheeks. “You don’t,” you replied, your hand tightening ever so slightly against his.

Taking your words as permission, Marcus’s lips dipped down to brush yours, feather-light at first, as if afraid of breaking you. But when you leaned into him, your hands resting against his chest, the kiss deepened, and he felt the last of his restraint give way.

For Marcus, it was not a moment of conquest, but surrender. And for you, it was not a moment of fear, but choice.

As you hesitantly pulled apart, resting against each other, the world seemed to shrink to just the two of you, standing beneath the stars.

“I am as grateful to you as a captive can be”, you mouthed, not daring to look at him and staring at his broad chest instead. “I must confess that I admire you deeply. I was a proud woman once. In your ways, your kindness and graciousness, I found parts of myself again that I thought had been lost in the shame of slavery. You are to me a savior and I have the highest regards for you.”

You paused, feeling his heartbeat quicken. “I wish to tell you that my loyalty is forever yours,” you added in almost a whisper, “as well as my heart.”

Your words touched him in ways he had dreamed but had not dared to think about in the daylight.

“Y/N,” he said, his voice low, “I have something I must ask you.”

He offered his hand by placing his broad palm before you. Slowly, you laid your small hand in his, brushing over the calloused skin of the soldier before you.

“For months, I have tried to show you that you are more than a captive to me. That you are not a servant to me. You have brought light to this home, to my life.”

A tear formed in your eyes as you caught his gaze filled with an earnest vulnerability you had never thought possible in a man of war.

“I would make you my wife,” he said, his voice trembling slightly. “Not because I own you, but because I love you. If you will have me.”

For a moment, you could only stare at him, overwhelmed by the weight of his words. Then, with a trembling hand, you reached out to touch his cheek, softly brushing over the stubbled skin. He leaned into your touch, closing his eyes in relief.

“Yes,” you whispered. “If you will have me.”

Hesitantly letting go of the balustrade, he knelt down, kissing your hand. “You don’t have to love me,” he whispered, his voice barely audible.

“But I love you. Marcus Acacius, my heart beats for you.”

His face lit up with unspeakable easement and adoration at your words.

Seeing Marcus kneel before you – not as a conqueror, but as a man offering his hand – you felt the weight of your old life lift. For the first time since your homeland fell, you chose your own future.
