a moment of solace

Summary:

For once in her life, Akiyama Mizuki was happy about going to school.

Work Text:

The girls’ uniform hung in Mizuki’s closet now. It felt right to see it when she got up on her first day of high school, and it felt even better to put it on. Mizuki took a picture of their outfit to send it to her sister, feeling proud of herself. An had even let them have her bow, reasoning that ties were ‘more fun to wear’. Mizuki hadn’t complained about it.

She felt amazing walking out of the house and down the streets to Kamiyama. The bullies were still there, and Mizuki was not looking forward to seeing them, but her uniform was a comfort now, instead of a painful reminder of how she had been born.

Mizuki felt like dancing. Finally, the school had let her wear a skirt to class. Finally, she could feel like a girl at school.

Was euphoria really this easy? Sure, it would pass the second any of the boys she’d known from middle school said a word in her presence, but the sheer excitement she felt at wearing the correct uniform to school was insane .

Mizuki swore she was on cloud nine. A skirt wouldn’t make any normal girl this excited, but Mizuki’s sister had told her that no one was really normal, per se, and today, she believed it. She was a girl, no matter what anyone at school said.

And today, she might be able to believe that. Tomorrow, when school was a full day affair, when it wasn’t just the opening ceremony and an hour of introductions, Mizuki would have a harder time believing in anything her sister said, in keeping up her joyous exterior, in telling herself she was worth it.

Mizuki let herself feel the sun on her skin and the wind in her hair. She let go of her fears for one second, on an empty street, and danced.

It was the best first day of high school she could’ve asked for.
