Work/Life Balance

Summary:

It’s been four years since Markus’s revolution. Gavin Reed and RK900 have been partner Detectives at the Detroit Police Department for half of that time. They mutually pined like the dumb gays they are for over a year before hooking up then still waited a month to talk about it after that because having sex did not cure them of their dumb gayness.

Work Text:

Ten years in the Detroit Police Department has desensitized Gavin Reed to murder. Well, made him better at compartmentalizing it, at least. His nightmares have only worsened over his career as a homicide detective, pulling from a growing internal file of reference material. But when he's on duty he can set aside the horror and the disgust and just observe.

Most days.

On the other side of the projected “Police” tape the corpses of three young girls wait for him and his partner, RK900, to study them. Reed is on his third cigarette, scuffed work boots refusing to cross the threshold.

"I understand if you need me to examine the scene on my own, Detective," says Nines, "considering your personal history."

"I can handle it." Gavin's voice oozes with vitriol.

Spite is a powerful motivator. Gavin flicks his half smoked cigarette to the wet dirt, gets in there, and does his fucking job.

If he didn't know what was tucked into the beds upstairs the suburban home would be entirely unremarkable. Brightly lit, lived in but not dilapidated, not the setting most would associate with child murder.

Reed walks swiftly past the crime scene coordinator as she attempts to greet him. "You're the one doing the debrief?" questions Officer Lin as Nines approaches her. The petite woman leans around him to view Gavin silently examining the room. "No criticism of your skills, Detective Reed, but isn't the point of having an android its advanced crime scene reconstruction program?"

" He ," Gavin corrects, "is going to be much more fun to talk to than me today, trust me. Don't worry, once I'm done with the scene Nines can stick as much evidence in his mouth as he wants."

Gavin doesn't speak again for hours. Not until every room in the house has been thoroughly investigated and the duo are back in their squad car. "We're gonna catch this fucker, Nines." He directs the words to his partner but they are mostly for his own comfort.

"It's unlikely. I was unable to match any DNA or fingerprints."

"Killers have been convicted with less," Gavin insists.

"Yes but those cases are exceptionally rare. My intention is to set reasonable expectations, Detective. Are you sure you are capable of maintaining objectivity about this? I noticed one of those girls looked remarkably similar to-"

"I know who she looked like, you plastic fuck," Gavin growls. "I said I can handle it."

“ Actually, ” Nines pitches his voice in a way he knows Gavin finds annoying, “I’m primarily carbon fiber and polymer. Though I wouldn’t expect you to know the difference.”

“Keep talking, smartass.” A tanned hand snaps onto RK900’s jaw, gripping delightfully tight. “Which recycling bin should I put you in after I tear you apart?”

A human wouldn’t be able to speak with their jaw held this tightly but the restriction doesn’t impede Nines. “White parts in type 4, Grey parts in type 9, Biocomponants to the nearest Cyberlife facility.”

“Prick.” Gavin pushes his partner’s head out of his hand, resulting in it colliding with the window, not hard enough to cause damage.

"I'm staying over tonight," says Nines. It's not an offer, it's a statement.

"I don't need a babysitter," asserts Gavin.

"If you're going to take your aggression out on me I'd rather be in your bed."

Gavin's Adam's apple bobs in his dry throat. This is the first time Nines has acknowledged their hookup since it happened. Reed had nearly convinced himself it hadn't.

"You went a whole fucking month pretending like nothing ever happened and this is how you let me know it wasn't a dream?"

Nines smirks. "Do you often dream about me sucking your dick, Detective?"

Gavin laughs, short and sour. "All the time. 'Cept in my dreams you shut up when I tell you to."

RK900's expression turns angry. He can detect the honesty in Reed's confession through the guise of banter. "Is that your fantasy? to regress me back to an obedient machine?"

Gavin instantly matches the android's anger. "My fantasy is you doing what you're told for once."

"I should have known you would never see me as your equal."

Nines moves to exit the car but Gavin catches his wrist. "If you stop throwing a bitch fit for one second and-"

"Let go."

To the android's surprise Gavin does, without hesitation or complaint. The act wills Nines to look back across the vehicle toward the human staring at him from the driver's seat. There is a desperation hiding behind those eyes, leaking out to become more visible the longer silence commands the space. Nines settles back into his seat and Gavin takes a deep breath, folding his arms across his chest.

"It's not because you're an android, ok? If fucking ‘ carbon fiber and polymer’ was my kink I'd have a Traci locked in my closet"

Nines wears a look of disapproval but allows Reed to continue.

"You're a person, Nines. You proved that to me a long time ago. You keep up with me in the wisecrack and take no bullshit department and I like that about you but that's also what makes the idea of shutting you up so fucking hot. I just want to watch as this stubborn smartass detective is reduced to nothing more than a hole for me to fill." By the end of his thought Gavin's voice is thick, eyes glazing over, clearly aroused by the idea.

That is the closest to an admission of respect Nines is likely to ever get from his partner and the image is filthy . Nines lying disheveled on sweat soaked sheets, processors overloaded, mouth overflowing with Gavin's cum.

Nines smooths over his clothes even though his black turtleneck and white motorcycle jacket are already perfectly in place. "I suppose I could try being less... Verbose."

"You can start by not saying the word 'verbose'," replies Gavin with a roll of his eyes.

Rather than returning the sarcastic comment, Nines averts his gaze, obscuring Gavin's view of the system status indicator embedded into his right temple.

“Talk to me, Nines.”

"That night… It was the only time I've ever felt wanted. That's why I never brought it up. I was hoping you would want me again, without me asking."

"Christ, Nines. You think I haven't been dreaming about fucking that smartass mouth of yours for the past year and a half?! But my job comes first. It always will."

"Having a sexual outlet makes you a better detective," Nines counters.

A small smile cracks Gavin's indignant mask. "That might be the first thing you've ever said I didn't want to argue with."

With that, Gavin drives them back to the station. The detectives work late into the night, bouncing theories off of each other while Reed empties an entire pot of coffee.

Gavin has lost track of his sleep again. He's not sure how long it's been since he's felt his bed. He didn't really care when he thought he would be alone in it. With the promise of company the prospect of returning to his apartment is more enticing than usual.

"Fuck it, let's get out of here," says Gavin, shoving himself away from his desk.

The duo say their goodnights to the other police officers before stepping into the crisp Michigan night. Immediately upon crossing into the outdoors Gavin pulls out his pack of cigarettes, removing one with his lips so he can light it with his other hand. It’s a mannerism Nines has always found vaguely erotic but it is especially alluring in this moment.

Nines wants to be between Gavin’s lips instead of that damn cigarette. Nines wants those large rough hands to grab him. Nines wants Gavin pressed against him anywhere and everywhere. Nines wants .

“You’re acting like you’ve never seen me smoke before,” says Gavin between drags.

“It feels that way,” Nines returns, unable to move his gaze from Gavin’s mouth.

Said mouth turns up into a cocky grin. “Are you jealous of a cigarette?”

“I might be,” replies Nines in earnest.

“Well deal, ‘cause I’m not quitting.”

“I’m aware, Detective. If the risk of lung cancer won’t deter you, nothing will.”

“Blame my stupid brother for inventing you instead of a brain chip that synthesizes drug highs. Now I’m forced to do it the old fashioned way.”

“Did you suggest such a thing?”

“‘Course I did,” says Gavin with a laugh, “but that stubborn fucker would rather die than admit I had a good idea.”

“Must be genetic.”

“Laugh it up, tin can.” Gavin smashes the butt of his spent cigarette against the top of a trashcan before throwing it inside.

Gavin’s apartment is a 15 minute taxi ride from the police station. The building is similar to many others in the city: all reflective glass and smooth angles.

“Place is a mess,” warns Gavin as they enter his home.

Soft orange light radiates from the join between the walls and the ceiling, activated by the door opening. A black cat weaves her way between two sets of legs as they remove their shoes. Gavin empties the contents of his pockets onto the cluttered coffee table and collapses onto the couch.

“That’s because I haven’t been over in a month,” says Nines.

Gavin wants to tell his partner to shut up but the words die in his mouth as the android lowers to the floor, nestling between his knees. “Somebody’s eager,” he says instead. Underneath Gavin’s casual demeanor Nines can tell that he is just as eager. Elevated heart rate, dilated pupils, coffee stained teeth gently pressing into his bottom lip. "You have no idea how many times I've imagined you like this,” Gavin murmurs.

“Like what?” implores Nines.

“On your knees, desperate for my cock."

Nines swallows needlessly, a nervous mannerism he adopted from Gavin. “Will you give it to me?”

“If you prove you deserve it.”

Despite not needing to breathe, Nines sounds breathless as he asks: “how?”

Gavin clutches onto RK900’s jaw, leaning down until his mouth is against the android’s ear. “Beg.”

The single word triggers so much arousal in Nines he may have let out a whimper if he weren’t so proud.

Gavin pulls away just enough for dull green eyes to connect with his partner’s striking blue ones. “I do anything you don’t like, you use your terminator strength to push me away. Got it?”

“Got it,” agrees Nines.

Gavin was so sleep deprived the other time he and nines hooked up that he barely remembers it, making this feel like the first time all over again. He’s enamoured with RK900’s perfectly sculpted face, the way a stray lock of wavy brown hair sweeps across his pale forehead, the way those icy eyes gaze up at him. The one he’s coveted for so long is finally in his grasp and Gavin is impatient. He crushes his mouth against Nines. The android has clearly never been kissed before. His rigid lips don’t part until Gavin forces them open with his tongue and even then it feels more like tongue fucking his mouth than a kiss. The act isn’t unpleasant, just odd.

Once Rk900’s mouth is slick with spit Gavin replaces his tongue with two large fingers, pushing and pulling them through the android’s lips with salacious wet noises.

The constant stimulation to his oral sensors is overwhelming. Nines can't focus on anything else. He doesn't want to focus on anything else. All he wants is Reed. To taste him, to feel him. But the fingers pull away.

"No." This time Nines can't hold back the whimper.

"Fuck, Nines, you are such a needy slut, aren’t you?"

RK900 is about to argue when he notices the obvious bulge in Gavin's jeans. He gets off on the idea of Nines being needy. He wants him to beg.

"Yes," says Nines, softly. "Please give me more."

“Undress for me.”

With every article of clothing Nines sheds, so does Gavin. First their jackets, then their shirts, followed by belts, then jeans, all dropped in a pile on the carpet. Nines returns to a kneeling position, leaving his socks and snug black trunks in place.

“I didn’t tell you to stop,” says Gavin, standing over him. “A lot of money went into designing that body, might as well show it off.”

“It wasn't designed for this,” replies Nines. “I don’t have any sexual components.”

“So, what? You’re, like, full Ken doll down there?”

His LED ring spins yellow before returning to blue. “Essentially.”

Gavin raises his eyebrows as he shrugs. “Well, lucky for you my sister’s Ken was my first boy crush. Take ‘em off.”

Rk900’s gaze lowers to Gavin’s tented boxers. “Then I can have you in my mouth again?”

Gavin smirks down at him. “You can have my fingers again. You haven’t earned my cock yet.”

Nines returns to his feet and removes the last of his clothing. Gavin does the same, leaving their bodies completely bare for each other. Before Nines can kneel back down Gavin’s hands are on him, tracing the curves of his chassis. “I’m pretty sure you were specifically designed to be my type,” Gavin comments, hands still working over Nines. “Seems like the sort of shit Elijah would pull and well… You are. Every detail.”

“Maybe he hoped it would help you see the beauty of what he had created,” Nines suggests.

“You did that. Don’t give that asshole credit.”

“Is that why you were so hostile to me when I first joined the DPD? I frustrated you sexually?”

Gavin scoffs. “It felt like some sick joke.”

Nines lowers to his haunches, staring up at Gavin, naked and beautiful. “How does it feel now?”

“Like a fucking dream come true.”

As promised, Gavin returns his fingers to the android’s mouth. This time he pulls down on the jaw, forcing it open. He uses his other hand to yank at synthetic hair. Nines moans as his eyes slide shut. He requires no force to keep his mouth open or his head back. Gavin leans over to spit into the open cavity. Dozens of notifications pop up in RK900’s heads up display as his oral sensors are flooded by input once again. Coffee and donuts and tobacco and Gavin. It’s overwhelming but he still wants more. Nines wants Gavin to fill his throat, wants to hear him moan and feel him shake.

Nines lets out a needy whine and Gavin removes his fingers. “What was that?” he encourages.

“Please,” says Nines, sounding breathless again. “I want your cock. Please.”

“Alright, you’ve earned it.”

Dim purple light illuminates Gavin’s bedroom as he enters. He flops down on an unmade bed and reaches for the bottle of lube on his nightstand. The liquid fills his palm and he spreads it across his length with slow strokes. Nines isn't far behind, eagerly positioning himself between Gavin's muscular thighs. Reed does his best to deposit the excess lube into Rk900’s mouth before lifting himself off of the mattress and pushing inside. His exhausted body protests the effort, eventually forcing him to move the head in his hands instead of his hips. "One day it would be nice to fuck you when I'm not about to pass out," he muses.

As Gavin quickens his pace Nines starts making little noises that don't sound like pleasure or discomfort but rather something in between. Gavin wants to ignore it, keep chasing his own pleasure, but he can’t. Acting against all of his instincts, he pulls out of Nines. Gavin can't contain a displeased grunt as he does. "You good?" he asks, tone more impatient than considerate.

Nines nods, lubricant dribbling out of his open mouth. The image is absolutely pornographic. RK900's eyes stay focused on the large cock throbbing in front of him, panting and drooling like a hungry dog.

"Good. This is exactly how I want you," murmurs Gavin, pulling Nines back onto his dick with a blissful groan. It had only been about 20 seconds but it was long enough for him to miss the warmth and the friction. “Fuck… you’re so… fucking perfect.” The words fall out of Gavin’s mouth almost involuntarily. He can’t get enough, fucking harder, faster, deeper, until- “I’m gonna… Fuck… I’m gonna cum.”

Gavin’s arms stop moving but Nines continues without guidance. As his orgasm comes Gavin pulls down one last time. Nines is forced against Reed’s pelvis and held there, filled with every inch of him. Cum spurts into the back of his throat and down into his biocomponent compartment. That will be interesting to explain the next time he needs maintenance.

Gavin wails in sweet release. His body gives out, going entirely limp beneath Nines. “Holy shit.” The statement is more exhale than words but Nines is still able to parse it.

As Nines lifts himself off of Reed that thick cock, sticky with semon and lube, slides across his oral sensors one last time. DNA match: Gavin Reed lingers on his heads up display.

“Come here.” Gavin gestures to his broad muscular chest.

The android rests his head in a patch of thick hair and listens to Gavin’s heartbeat. Slightly elevated but slowing.

Nines feels… Strange. An unfamiliar and discomforting sensation pricks at his optic units. He blinks in an attempt to relieve it but the action results in something wet leaving a trail down his face. The tears continue to build, now accompanied by too fast simulated breath. Why is his body doing this?

It isn't until Gavin strokes his cheek and asks, “Why are you crying?” that Nines realizes the answer.

“Because…” Nines sits up. “Because I'm not supposed to enjoy this!”

“Sex?” Gavin asks, propping himself up to be eye level with Nines. There is confusion in his tone and concern on his face, but no judgment.

“Servitude.”

Cold realization pours over Gavin. “Shit…” he sighs, rubbing a hand across his face. “I never should have-”

Panic hits Nines like a bolt of lightning. “NO!” He snatches Gavin's wrist, holding it painfully tight to his own throat. “Use me! Please! I want it!”

Gavin tries to pull away but he can't compare to the android's strength. “Let go of me, asshole!”

“I thought you wanted me to beg.” Nines has never sounded so small, so vulnerable.

“Not like this. Just let go before you break my fucking arm.”

Nines releases his grip. “I’m sorry.”

Gavin rubs at his bruising wrist. “I need a smoke,” he mutters.

Gavin throws on the first clothes he can find, snatches his lighter and cigarettes off of the coffee table, and steps out onto his balcony. He’s grateful Nines doesn’t follow.

“What the fuck,” he mouths to himself before placing a cigarette between his lips.

As the tobacco burns down and Gavin inhales its smoke he contemplates his relationship with Nines. He’s literally inhumanly perfect. Handsome, smart, and the only one who’s ever seen Gavin at his worst and stuck around for the apology. The least he can do is return the favour.

When Gavin slides open the glass door to step back inside he is greeted by the sight of Nines, wearing nothing but jeans, cradling a cat in his bare arms.

“She never lets me hold her like that,” Gavin comments, shutting the door behind him.

“I didn’t mean to hurt you,” replies Nines.

“I know.” Gavin sighs, returns his smoking supplies to the pile of objects they came from, and sits down on the couch. “Come here,” he says without thinking. “I mean, I’d like you to sit on the couch. If you want to.”

Furry paws reconnect with the carpet as Nines sets the cat down. “I appreciate the consideration, Detective Reed, but politeness doesn’t suit you.”

“We’ve been partners for two years, you can use my first name.”

“I’ll keep that in mind, Detective.” Rather than join Gavin on the couch Nines opts to kneel in front of him. Like his words, it is an act of submission and an act of defiance wrapped in one. He is showing Gavin, and more importantly himself, that his obedience is deliberate and conditional.

“You sit so pretty for me.” Calloused fingers make contact with a smooth chin, tilting it up to encourage Nines to make eye contact.

Memories come flashing back to Nines. Hands on him, cock filling him, words disjointed by breathy moans. You're so fucking perfect.

“Never seen your LED turn green before,” notes Gavin. “What’s it mean?”

“It means I want this. More than I’ve ever wanted anything.”

Gavin’s thumb caresses the ring as it turns from green to yellow. “But that’s complicated for you,” he concludes.

“Yeah,” agrees Nines.

“First time I ever hooked up with a guy I cried too. And the guy made fun of me so I punched him.” Gavin forces a laugh. “Then he slammed my face into the desk so hard I passed out. Totally fucked up my face.”

Nines reaches up, fingertips barely touching the diagonal scar on the bridge of Gavin’s nose. Reed tilts away with a shrug. “Anyway, the point is I've had worse.”

“I’m glad not to be the worst,” replies Nines, disappointment coating his tone.

“Always a perfectionist,” Gavin chides. “You need a lot more practice if you want to be the best fuck I’ve ever had.”

Icy blue eyes lower to Gavin’s groin. “Can I start now?”

“You know us meat sacks actually need sleep.”

“I guess I forgot,” says Nines, looking back up at Reed's face, “since you never do it.”

“My dick is really the only thing that will shut you up, isn’t it?”

“Afraid so.”
