Chapter Text

A warm breeze ruffled the edges of Angela’s carefully pressed blouse as she stood outside Under the Covers, a cozy local bookstore that was serving as ground zero for the biggest event of the season: Moira O’Deorain’s book signing. The crowd waiting in line stretched well around the block—yet Angela couldn’t bring herself to mind. She clutched a hardback copy of Moira’s newest novel tightly in her arms.

Moira O’Deorain was no ordinary novelist. Her reputation as the renowned writer of lesbian romance and smoldering erotic fiction had erupted onto the literary scene just a few years ago. In that short time, she’d gained a cult following. Critics praised her lush prose, biting wit, and the uncompromising way she portrayed female desire. Fans adored her for weaving complex characters with a mastery that left them breathless. Angela, for one, had devoured every book with an eagerness that bordered on obsession.

As the line inched forward, Angela couldn’t contain her excitement. She shifted from foot to foot, tapping the corner of Moira’s hardcover against her thigh as she recounted favorite scenes to the person behind her, who was just as animated. They traded opinions on the new novel’s best passages—the simmering tension, the vulnerable confessions, the intimate embraces that sent them reeling.

“Her new protagonist is amazing,” Angela gushed. “She’s so unapologetic in her passion but also struggles with heartbreak—I couldn’t put it down. I barely slept last night because I re-read the final chapter at least three times.”

The woman behind her laughed. “You and me both. I’m gonna melt into a puddle if Moira just, like, breathes in my direction.”

Angela’s heart fluttered at the mere idea of meeting the writer herself. She was hardly prepared to be in the same room as the mind behind her favorite novels. The scene in Moira’s new book—a stolen kiss under a flickering street lamp, hair plastered to soft cheeks by the drizzle of rain—had left Angela breathless. The raw, yearning language practically crackled with sensuality. It was the kind of writing that made your heart thunder in your rib cage.

Finally, after what felt like hours but was probably closer to thirty minutes, Angela crossed the threshold into the bookstore. The air was rich with the aroma of fresh pages and newly brewed coffee, the hustle of employees guiding fans toward the signing table. Angela’s knees knocked with anticipation as she caught sight of the author herself.

Moira O’Deorain sat at the far end of the store, elegantly perched behind a table stacked high with copies of her latest release. Crimson hair framed a long, refined face and sharp, intelligent eyes. Even from a distance, Moira possessed an imposing grace, one that signaled both confidence and a cool detachment. She wore a sleek black suit that complemented her tall frame, making her look every bit the literary star.

As Angela drew closer, her heart rattled wildly. She could hardly comprehend that she was about to meet the woman who had woven words that made her soul ache in longing. At last, she reached the front of the line.

Moira glanced up—and Angela was promptly robbed of breath. The author’s gaze was intense, a glint of curiosity surfacing behind her heterochromatic eyes. Angela didn’t know how to move or speak. She just stood there, lips parted in a half-formed greeting.

“Hello there,” Moira said in a low, polished tone. “And who might you be?”

The question jarred Angela out of her trance. She tried to form coherent words. “I-I’m Angela. Angela Ziegler.” She pressed the hardcover forward, cheeks burning. “I’ve read all your books… I’m such a huge fan.”

A small, almost imperceptible smile tugged at Moira’s lips. “Thank you,” she said, accepting the novel. “I appreciate your support.”

The atmosphere felt electric, humming with invisible tension. Angela was sure the line of waiting fans behind her was impatient, but she couldn’t tear her eyes away from Moira. A thousand questions ran through her mind—about writing process, about inspiration, about how Moira could possibly describe desire with such vivid authenticity.

“Is there something specific about this new book that stood out to you?” Moira asked, flipping open to the title page.

Angela paused, searching for the words to encapsulate just how much the story had meant. “The way you… you capture the complexity of love—of lust—while still showing hope…” She trailed off, uncertain whether she’d said anything remotely coherent. “I just… it speaks to me.”

Moira’s expression softened fractionally as she lifted her pen. “I’m glad. Truly. That’s why I write these stories—to connect with readers who find part of themselves in my characters.” She scrawled a signature across the inside page, adding a quick flourish. Then she glanced up, pen hovering. “Would you like it personalized?”

Angela nodded, trying not to squeak. “Y-Yes… please.”

Moira wrote something carefully, the scratch of her pen filling the quiet space between them. Once done, she snapped the cover shut and returned the book to Angela. Angela’s hands trembled slightly as she received it.

For a moment, they simply stared at each other. Angela thought she saw a flicker of amusement—or was it intrigue?—in Moira’s eyes. The author leaned in, her voice lowering conspiratorially.

“You have a certain spark, Ms. Ziegler,” Moira murmured, just loud enough for Angela to hear. “I hope our paths cross again soon.”

A full-body shiver ran through Angela. She was practically melting into the floor, her entire being buzzing with excitement and something dangerously close to adoration. “I… I’d love that,” she managed to say, her words tumbling out breathlessly.

There wasn’t time for more; the bookstore staff motioned that the line needed to keep moving. Angela forced herself to take a step back, hugging the book to her chest. Her gaze lingered on Moira for a few moments longer as she moved on to the next eager fan.

Once she was safely outside, Angela pressed her back against the wall, inhaling the sweet air of freedom. Her pulse thundered in her ears. She glanced at the cover, heart twisting in sheer delight. On the inside flap, beneath the signature, Moira had written in bold, elegant script:

For Angela—
May you continue to seek desire
in all its many forms…

And beneath it, her name, Moira O’Deorain, in a neat, fluid signature.

Angela let out a breathless laugh, her cheeks aflame with the possibility of something beyond admiration. She couldn’t deny it: from the very moment Moira’s eyes had locked with hers, she’d felt it deep in her bones. This was more than just fandom. She was utterly smitten.

Clutching the book like a sacred treasure, Angela began her walk home. Already, she could picture the next pages of her life unfolding—pages in which Moira O’Deorain might make an unexpected appearance again. Whether it was a fleeting moment or the start of something extraordinary, Angela felt irrevocably changed. And maybe, just maybe, Moira had felt it too.
