what's going on in that head of yours?

Summary:

"That’s how he ended up here, with this idiotic idea. Sue him, he was bored. He wanted to see if he could break Alex’s composure, which seemed easier to do these days: Alex wasn’t wearing the stoic mask so much. Nate decided to project some ideas, images—but not just any images."

OR Nate is sleep deprived after having nightmares; he tries distract himself with an experiment: to see if he can still project thoughts to Alex; it works out surprisingly well for both of them

Notes:

I love this family so much!! This is set before the epilogue in the book but soon after their time with the hippies. Nate is still getting used to their new identities, so everyone is still referred to by their original names.

Thank you so much, J, for helping me edit this!!

Work Text:

They were in a cabin. Not Nate’s cabin. But it felt more like home than Herschel Lake ever did. Sure, there was still a stack of Louis L’Amour westerns on the end table and a shower that couldn’t decide if it wanted to be freezing or scalding hot. But what really made this place home was the people there with him. The two people he loved more than anything or anyone in the universe. Alex and Art. Or rather Aaron and Ellie. That was going to take some time to get used to.

Alex, in the kitchen making Nate a perfect cup of coffee. Art, sitting on the couch reading upside down, her head off the side and feet in the air.

They had found a cabin to rent for cheap (it was the middle of the winter, the off-season) and decided to lay low with their new identities. He was grateful for what Alex’s connections had done, even if they were hippies. They took the three of them in, gave them a place to breathe after the farm, after the tunnel, after everything. They even helped them create their new names, though having the same last name was definitely Alex’s idea. They hadn’t had an official wedding, hell, they weren’t even engaged; what their family had was never conventional. But it was still the best family Nate could ever ask for. He still wanted to have a little ceremony, though, maybe by the lake, just the three of them. Who better to officiate the wedding than Artemis Darth Vader, space princess. Now that they weren’t on the run being actively shot at, he would have time to plan something special.

In the meantime, he was drinking coffee while staring out the windows, watching the sunset paint the sky with vivid colors. It was probably too late for him to be drinking coffee, Alex grumbling something about not being able to sleep later as he was making it, but Nate wanted it anyway. He still wasn’t sleeping well, having nightmares filled with a basement, a gun, the most fucked up game of Russian roulette. Sometimes his mind played tricks on him, changing the memory into Peter compelling him into putting a bullet into the brain of the love of his life. He usually tried to force himself awake before it got to that point. Usually he woke up sobbing, pleading, just like Art had in the basement. At least when he woke up, he could move his limbs, clutch onto Alex who was already hugging him close, whispering into his ear, reminding Nate that they were okay, they were together, they were safe.

For a while after the tunnel, the three of them still preferred to sleep in their usual formation, Art in the middle with Alex and Nate on either side. Still not wanting to let her out of their sight, still in disbelief that she was still there, that she hadn’t left. Once they moved into the cabin, there were enough bedrooms that Art decided she wanted to claim one of the rooms for her own, to be able to pull out her entire rock collection. It had gotten impressively extensive, and it was shocking that Alex had managed to keep it safe despite the craziness they’d been through.

Luckily, that meant Art hadn’t witnessed all of Nate’s nightmares, and hearing her chainsaw snoring across the hall, along with Alex’s calm voice, was enough to lull him back to sleep most nights. Last night was one of those nights; Nate was still exhausted, though, wrung out from his nightmare and subsequent panic attack.

Nate felt Alex nudge his foot under the table, bringing him back to the present. He looked up to see Alex’s worried face, his lips frowning just a little bit. He frowned less these days. He raised his eyebrow, a silent question even if the only person around for miles was Art. Nate just shook his head, trying to shake the memories from it, but still pushing his foot back against Alex’s a little harder.

He tried shifting his thoughts to the present. After the tunnel, after Art had made the deal to stay, they were still figuring out what that meant. Sure Art had lost a tooth, which had never happened before, but did that mean everything was different? Did they still have their connection? Nate and Alex had been able to communicate a few times in the days leading up to the farm, but could he still do that? He knew that he could project to Alex directly, having done so to convince Alex to get out of the damn truck when they thought that Art was leaving them to go to her home planet.

That’s how he ended up here, with this idiotic idea. Sue him, he was bored. He wanted to see if he could break Alex’s composure, which seemed easier to do these days: Alex wasn’t wearing the stoic mask so much. Nate decided to project some ideas, images—but not just any images. He was thinking back to the barn, when Alex had fucked his thighs, when they had to be quiet. They’ve had some time to learn each other’s bodies since then, too. Sometimes it was quick handjobs when they didn’t have much privacy at the hippie commune (seriously, how did Alex know these people?). Once it was in the shower of a shitty motel room after Art had gone to sleep. They found out that motel showers were definitely not big enough for two grown men, especially with how broad Alex’s shoulders were.

Nate was trying to think of the perfect scenario, what he wanted Alex to do to him later that night—but he started thinking of the one time at the commune instead, while they were making out away from the tents in the middle of the night. Nate dropping down to his knees. How good it had felt to have Alex looking down at him, stroking his face as he was trying not to thrust into Nate’s mouth. Nate heard a choking sound, thinking it was coming from him in his memory; it took him a second to realize that Alex had choked on his own coffee, coughing after it went down the wrong way. Alex’s eyes were wide, face red, staring at him. Nate wasn’t sure if he should be sheepish for being caught or smug that he had gotten Alex to react like that. Whatever Nate’s face was doing, Alex’s expression quickly morphed from shocked to heated.

“Alex, did you forget you’re not supposed to inhale liquid?” Art asked, causing them both to jump.

“Yeah, something like that,” Alex grumbled, not taking his eyes off Nate.

“Should we not have vegetable beef soup for dinner, then? That’s kind of a liquid.”

Nate tried not to laugh at that. He failed miserably. “I’m sure it’ll be fine. You just have to remember not to choke, buddy.”

Alex grumbled again as he took another sip of coffee.

Nate and Alex got dinner ready as Art kept reading her book. Alex being a little more handsy than usual with Nate. As Nate was trying to make toast, Alex was never too far away. Sure, it was a small kitchen, but still. Alex grabbing Nate’s hips, fingers digging in, as he moved Nate to get to the saucepan. Alex towering over Nate to reach for the bowls to put the soup in, making sure to lean his entire front along Nate’s back. Alex giving him heated glances each time they touched. Nate knew this was payback for earlier: making Nate more and more on edge, knowing he could do nothing about it until they went to bed and locked the door.

By the time they sat down to eat, Nate was on the verge of crawling over the table to kiss Alex then and there. Art glanced between the two of them with that look, like they were a puzzle she was trying to figure out.

She took a breath like she was going to start asking questions.

“So what adventure are we on now, hoss?” Nate asked quickly, trying to distract her by asking questions about the latest L’Amour western she was reading. He did his best to focus on her answers about the book, the tale of a guy named Milo Talon who was forced to fight alongside his sworn enemy. Nate vaguely remembered the plot, thinking he had read it a long time ago, one summer when he had escaped to the woods by Herschel Lake.

Daring to glance at Alex, Nate saw him almost smirking into his soup. He definitely knew what Nate was doing—or rather, what Nate was trying not to think about. How had this happened? He had been trying to make Alex all flustered, and it had completely backfired. He had to get his shit together.

The rest of the evening seemed to be fine, Alex backing off a little bit. Nate wasn’t sure if he was disappointed or glad for the space to keep his mind out of the gutter. Eventually, Art went to bed; soon enough, her snoring could be heard from the kitchen where they were cleaning up.

It wasn’t until they went into their own bedroom that Alex rounded on Nate, crowding him up against the wall as soon as he locked the door. His mouth on Nate’s neck, licking and biting, his stubble scratching hard as his whole body pinned Nate to the wall. The whiplash had Nate whimpering, legs nearly giving out; the only thing keeping him standing was Alex’s weight pinning him to the wall.

“Oh fuck, Alex,” Nate whispered (he definitely didn’t whine). He grabbed at the back of Alex’s head, hair still too short to really have anything to grab onto.

Alex chuckled against his neck—and then he stopped moving. That made Nate actually whine because—what the fuck. Why wasn’t he moving?

“What do you want, babe?” Alex whispered in his ear. Teeth brushing against it but not biting down.

Nate tried to move, to create some friction between them, but quickly realized that he was truly pinned. He went to move his hands and found them held down by Alex’s big hands—when the fuck had that happened? His moan was cut off with a heated kiss. When they broke apart, too soon, Alex was still holding him in place. “No. Use your words.”

Nate’s brain wasn’t connected to his mouth anymore. That had to be it. He was breathing hard but couldn’t get any words out. So he did the first thing he could think of: he tried projecting again. Words were still hard, but he had an image of Alex holding him up and fucking him up against the wall. He thought about it and tried projecting it with such force that he let it consume him, wanting Alex to hear him so badly.

The growl he heard from Alex pulled him out of the connection, and he found himself almost falling over when Alex pulled away slightly.

But of course he didn’t fall. Alex would never let that happen. Nate felt strong arms wrap around his waist as he was kissed within an inch of his life.

Regrettably, he had to pull away for air, but at least Alex seemed to be just as affected by this.

“Turn around and face the wall.”

Nate wasn’t sure if he should moan at the memory of the first time Alex had told him to turn around, or complain about the fact that Alex wasn’t picking him up to fuck him against the wall like he had hoped.

Whatever noise came out, something in between a moan and a whine, made Alex bring his hand up to cover Nate’s mouth before he got too loud. “Do you still trust me?” Alex asked without moving his hand away.

Nate nodded while also glaring at him because of course he fucking trusts him.

“Well, I don’t want you to fall over while I go grab the lube. I don’t want to hurt you by not prepping you, but I also don’t want you falling over and hurting yourself before we get to the good part.” Nate huffed out of his nose in annoyance. “And we may be behind a locked door, but the walls aren’t that thick. Do we need to find something to keep you quiet?”

Alex raised an eyebrow when he felt Nate’s cock twitch against his thigh. “Noted.”

He shifted slowly to make sure that Nate could actually stand before heading over to his duffel bag to grab a small bottle of lube out of it. He looked pleased as he made his way back over to where Nate was standing, facing the wall as instructed. But the look Nate was giving him over his shoulder hit him square in the chest. He was still fully clothed, and yet he was the sexiest person that Alex had ever seen.

He wanted to destroy him. To hear all the noises that Nate was capable of making. Pulling them out of him with systematic patience. But they couldn’t be loud, not tonight. That would have to wait.

Alex pulled his flannel off, rolled it up tight, and handed it over to Nate.

“For now, shove this in your mouth if you can’t keep quiet.”

“You make do when you need to?” Nate quoted Alex’s own words back to him.

Alex smirked. “Yeah, yeah I do.”

Returning to his position behind Nate, Alex kissed his neck as he undid Nate’s pants. As he was shoving them down, he was careful not to touch his cock. Nate expected to hear the bottle of lube opening, but the only thing he heard was his own heavy breathing as he hung his head, feeling so strung out. He didn’t notice as Alex pocketed the lube, kneeling down behind him to get him fully out of his pants. After throwing them to the side, Alex grabbed his ass with both hands. He bit down on Nate’s left cheek, instantly soothing it with his tongue after.

Nate let out a little yelp of surprise. Alex pulled back just long enough to reprimand him. “Use the shirt and keep quiet. Can’t have you getting too loud.”

Nate glared at him over his shoulder, but put it in his mouth. The smell of Alex on the shirt only made him moan louder, hips thrusting forward, looking for any sort of friction. He let out a frustrated whine upon being met with nothing but empty air.

Alex got back to work, biting Nate’s ass and the back of his thighs. Eventually he had to hold Nate’s hips because he was shoving them back so hard. Finally, he spread him open and licked over his hole.

Nate had no idea where Alex had learned to do this but holy shit fuck did it feel good. He was glad for the shirt because he couldn’t shut up at this point. The beard burn on his ass hurt so good, and he didn’t want it to stop.

He took a hand off the wall and went to stroke himself, to get some sort of relief. Alex noticed and bit his ass a little harder. “No touching. Not yet.”

Nate thought about it. Thought about touching himself anyway because it hurt not to. But then he noticed that Alex had stopped too. He was still holding onto Nate’s hips, but otherwise not touching him. So Nate decided to put his hand back on the wall.

He was instantly rewarded with Alex’s tongue back on him, opening him up. He had no idea when, but Alex had lubed up his finger, slowly pushing one in beside his tongue. At this point Nate was nearly dripping from the treatment, but he knew that Alex didn’t want to hurt him.

Alex stood up and Nate mourned the loss of his tongue for just a moment. Soon he felt another finger being added, stretching him open, as Alex started biting and marking up his shoulders. Possessive fucker. Not that Nate minded. At all. He hoped the marks would stay long after they both eventually came.

When Nate started thrusting his hips back, matching Alex’s pace, he felt more lube drip down his ass before a third finger was added. “Look at you opening up so nice for me.”

Nate couldn’t take it anymore. He let the shirt drop out of his mouth. “Fuck me. I’m ready.”

“Say please.”

“Fuck yy…ugh,” Nate tried to bite back, but Alex chose that exact moment to change the angle of his wrist. Brushing along Nate’s prostate with each thrust.

“Sorry, I didn’t catch that,” Alex said with a smirk.

“Fuck. You.” Nate finally managed to spit out.

“No, that's what I’m planning to do to you. Unless you have any complaints.”

“I hate you.”

“No you don’t.”

Before Nate could say anything else, Alex reached around and stroked his cock in time with his fingers moving in and out of him. It was almost too much and Nate had a plan, goddammit.

“Stop, stop, stop, I’m gonna –” he pleaded as he pitched forward, head falling against the wall.

Alex took his hand away from Nate’s cock and slowed his other hand down. It took a moment for Nate to get his breathing back under control before he noticed Alex’s calloused fingers slowly rubbing against his hip. It was soothing.

“Please, can you fuck me already?” he asked, still a little breathless.

“Shhh, I’ve got you. Turn back around.”

Nate wasn’t prepared for what he saw when he turned around. Alex was gorgeous. His chin was still a little wet from eating him out. His pupils were blown and full of heat—but also love. So full of love that it kind of hurt.

Nate had to kiss him. He had to. They’d come so far since that first kiss. That one was tentative and awkward, full of possibilities and hope. This one was all-consuming. He felt like he was on fire.

He also realized that Alex was still fully clothed. How was that even possible? He fumbled with Alex’s belt, not willing to break away from the kiss to try and see what he was doing. They both grew impatient and Alex finally batted his hands away to do it himself. Letting out a growl when he was finally able to free his cock and Nate immediately started stroking him.

Alex was groping his ass, still so sensitive from the beard burn and bite marks. Next thing Nate knew, he was being fucking lifted in the air and felt his back hit the wall. All the air left his lungs, but it wasn’t from the impact of hitting the wall. It was from this: seeing Alex’s muscles tense as he shifted Nate a little. Maneuvering him to the side so that he could guide his cock to where Nate was still dripping wet.

“You ready?” he whispered softly.

Nate nodded, not trusting himself to speak. He tried to keep looking at Alex as he felt himself slowly sink down, but soon his eyes were rolling back, head thumping onto the wall behind him.

It seemed to go on forever; Nate felt so much more full this way. Once Alex was fully seated inside, Nate felt Alex’s face drop into the space between his neck and shoulder, panting a little. “Fuck, you still feel so tight. So good.”

“Move. Please move.”

“I’ve got you.”

And he did, didn’t he. Like, Alex was literally holding him up. But it was so much more than that.

Before he could get too caught up in that sappy line of thought, Alex started thrusting. Nate knew that Alex could hold his weight, but fuck, he was still holding on for dear life. He was pretty sure that there were scratch marks all over Alex’s shoulders at this point.

He wasn’t sure when he started babbling, asking for harder, faster, more. Alex slowed for just a moment, adjusting Nate a little higher to get better leverage. When he started thrusting again, the angle was just right, hitting his prostate straight on.

The first moan had barely left his lips when Alex started kissing him. Trying to quiet his noises. Alex detached himself only long enough to say, “Go ahead and touch yourself.”

Nate wasn’t going to last long. He started jerking himself off, trying to time his rhythm to Alex’s thrusts. He wasn’t too successful, but it didn’t matter. He was so close to the edge. It felt like he was floating, hitting a fever pitch. Then, like a rubber band snapping, he started coming between them.

The ringing in his ears eased up in time to hear Alex growling, pumping into Nate a few more times before stilling. Filling him up.

They stayed like that for a minute, both breathing heavy.

Alex broke the silence first, whispering, “You okay?’

Nate nodded.

“I’m gonna put you down now, okay?”

Nate thought he nodded again, his brain still not quite back online. Apparently his legs weren’t either, because they gave out the moment Alex put him down.

“Whoa, shit.” Alex grabbed him tight against his chest. “You sure you’re okay? I’ve literally never heard you this quiet.” Nate heard his teasing tone, but also the worry laced through it.

“Yeah. Sor – sorry, words are hard right now. I’m trying.”

“Okay,” Alex chuckled, kissing his forehead. He picked Nate up again (what the fuck) and gently carried him over to the bed. “I’ll be right back,” he said, wanting to make sure that Nate knew he wasn’t going far. I love you, Nate heard, felt, Alex press into his mind before heading out to grab a wet towel to clean them both off.

“I love you too, you know,” Nate said as Alex wiped him down. Alex smiled up at him and set the towel aside, kissing every inch of his body as he made his way back up, wrapping Nate in his arms before they both fell asleep.
