Work Text:
The soft hum of the studio’s overhead lights contrasted sharply with the thudding of Jihoon’s heart. As a seasoned photographer, he found himself in an unfamiliar maze of emotions. Not because of the dim elevated view where he usually summoned his creativity, but rather due to the presence of the man strutting in front of the camera—his ex-boyfriend, Seungcheol.
Jihoon adjusted the sensitivity of his camera, fighting back the myriad feelings that came rushing at him as Seungcheol posed. The model was effortlessly charming, his signature smirk glinting under the soft-box lights. “Ready for round two, Jihoon?” Seungcheol called out, a playful edge lacing his voice.
“Are you kidding?” Jihoon quipped back instantly, trying (and failing) to keep his voice steady as he framed Seungcheol’s tall figure in his viewfinder. “I just spent ten minutes getting the right angle on that last shot. I need to make sure I don’t accidentally capture your ego this time.”
“Ego?” Seungcheol laughed, a warm sound that seemed to wrap around Jihoon like a familiar embrace. That sound stirred up memories of intimate mornings and playful banter, the warmth of familiarity colliding with the sharp pang of nostalgia. “You loved my ego last time we were together. Remember that photoshoot where I was that good?”
“Right, how could I forget?” Jihoon muttered under his breath as he attempted to suppress a smile. It was hard to maintain a professional demeanour when all he could picture was the way Seungcheol would look after successful shoots, beaming and teasing about Jihoon's eye for detail.
“Come on, show me what you’ve got!” Seungcheol struck a pose, hands on hips, body angled just so. “What, are you distracted by my unmatched beauty?”
Jihoon rolled his eyes but couldn’t help but chuckle, focusing through the lens. “Let’s just see what your beauty can do for my portfolio. I’m a serious artist, you know?”
“I always knew you had a serious side hidden beneath all that teasing. You’re like a lion in disguise—a gorgeous little wildcat.” Seungcheol winked, throwing Jihoon’s composure into chaos once more. “But we both know I’m the real star of the show.”
“Right,” Jihoon scoffed, his finger shuttering rapidly as he captured Seungcheol in multiple angles. “The show’s all about the composition… and of course the light.” He moved around, trying to maintain his distance while commanding the scene. “Besides, I don’t recall casting you as ‘the star’ on my call sheet.”
Seungcheol made an exaggerated gasp. “How could you?! I’m hurt, Jihoon. Here I thought we had something, and you don’t even acknowledge my star power.”
Shooting him an incredulous look from behind the camera, Jihoon glanced away to hide his smile. “Alright, diva. Just try to stay serious for a moment, okay?” The request was met with a mock-serious nod from Seungcheol, his expression dramatically solemn.
“Fine. You want serious?” He dropped his shoulders and attempted to channel an air of broody depth, turning slightly away from the lens. It was an uncanny combination of striking and humorous, and for a moment, Jihoon was at a loss.
After a few clicks, the tension began to dissipate. Jihoon couldn’t resist taking a shot for the banter—Seungcheol pretending to brood while letting a silly smirk break through. “That’s more like it,” Jihoon said, reviewing the shots on his camera. “The brooding model with a streak of playfulness. Who’d have thought?”
“Just call me an enigma,” Seungcheol said, flashing a smile that could brighten even the cloudiest day. And with that, Jihoon felt the weight of their past—a complicated tangle of love, passion, and a messy breakup—roll across the set like a soft fog.
“More like a headache,” Jihoon shot back, but the warmth in his tone was undeniable. He couldn’t help but tease. “A beautiful headache, sure, but still one I want to resolve professionally.”
Seungcheol stepped toward him, closing the gap. “What if I offered you a new angle to explore?” His voice was low, sultry, pulling Jihoon back into that moment when they were together.
“Um, I—” Jihoon stammered, suddenly very aware of the closeness. “This is strictly professional, remember?”
“Professional can be fun, too,” Seungcheol purred, leaning in just a fraction more. “I mean, who knows, maybe this shoot could reignite some old sparks?”
“Is that what you think?” Jihoon tried to take a step back, but his heart betrayed him as he held eye contact. “You think you can charm your way back into my life with flirtation?”
“I know I can,” Seungcheol teased, his grin wide. “It’s what I do best, after all.”
Jihoon took a deep breath, pushing down the fluttering sensations. “Well, let’s keep it at ‘model and photographer’ for today, shall we? Just remember, you’re here to work, not to flirt.”
“I can do both. It’s called multitasking!” Jihoon watched as Seungcheol picked at the fabric of his shirt, the muscles in his arm flexing, attention darting between the camera and Jihoon’s eyes; there was something about it that made Jihoon’s internal resolve waver.
“Just… please, keep it professional,” Jihoon reminded himself silently, reaffirming his ground as he shot a few more frames, grateful that his camera granted him an escape from the emotional labyrinth he now found himself in.
As if sensing his turmoil, Seungcheol leaned closer again, this time looking genuinely intrigued. “Are you okay, Jihoon? You seem a little… distracted.”
“Me?” Jihoon managed, feigning a lighthearted tone despite the skip of his heart. “Busy working, thanks.” The euphemism tasted like a confession, but he laughed it away.
“Right. We both know you’ve never been good at hiding how you really feel.”
“Can we focus on you, please?” Jihoon pressed, raising his camera and gesturing for Seungcheol to try a different expression. “How about a dreamy gaze to the side—something mysterious?”
“Is that your way of getting me to look for inspiration in the distance while you stare at me?” Seungcheol teased further, raising an eyebrow suggestively.
“Stop putting me off my game, Cheol,” Jihoon replied, frustration mingling with undercurrents of longing. “Besides, you’re supposed to be the one with the poses.”
“Maybe I want you to find me more interesting than the background,” Seungcheol murmured, setting an unexpected tension in the air.
Before Jihoon could respond, he thought he felt a shift in Seungcheol’s expression, something shrouded in sincerity beneath the constant banter. He found himself relenting slightly in the depths of Seungcheol’s gaze. “What if I don’t want to look away?”
“Then don’t,” Seungcheol whispered. It was a simple invitation that resonated deep within Jihoon.
And as Jihoon found himself retreating from their shared past, wrestling the demons of nostalgia, one thing became clear—outside their complicated history, the undeniable chemistry between them was still ablaze.
With a shake of his head, Jihoon turned momentarily from the lens, bouncing back to professionalism. “Let’s change the backdrop. Please,” he said firmly, redirecting the energy in the room. “I need something different to focus on.”
“Sure, but I bet the chemistry will still seep through those shots.” Seungcheol shot back, his confidence unwavering.
“You’re impossible.” Jihoon’s comment was sardonic, but the smile tugging at his lips betrayed him once more.
“Only for you. Now, how about a killer pose, hmm?” Seungcheol eagerly went along, ready to showcase a mix of charm and allure.
With the reconfigured backdrop painted a soft cream, Jihoon adjusted his settings and prepared to shoot. Peering through the lens, he quickly lost himself as Seungcheol blossomed into various poses. Despite the heat of frustration bubbling inside—an amalgamation of professionalism and the remnants of unresolved feelings—it was hard not to admire the effortless beauty of the man before him.
As Jihoon snapped another image, he could feel the memories dissipating, blending into laughter, a teasing comment, or a shared smile—the past no longer a barrier, but a radiant backdrop that surrounded their present.
For the rest of the shoot, Jihoon channeled every spark of tension into his work, leaving playfulness woven into their interactions. Underneath the lights, their repartee twisted and turned between flirty quips and serious stances, and every click captured the interplay of light—of passion both spoken and unspoken.
And while the past was an echo in every frame, there was something refreshing in feeling the old flames begin to flicker with new life. As they wrapped up for the day, Jihoon finally set down his camera, breathing heavily as he caught Seungcheol looking at him with that irresistible glimmer, as if sharing a secret only they could perceive.
“Okay, maybe I haven’t completely lost my touch as your photographer,” Jihoon admitted, letting the laughter linger.
“And perhaps you never will,” Seungcheol replied, stepping forward again, an unyielding challenge in his eyes. “But it wouldn’t hurt to warm up to me again, would it?”
Jihoon had been prepared to brush it off, to close the door on what could be a painful decision. But looking into Seungcheol's eyes, feeling the electricity between them, Jihoon hesitated, the practicalities wavering against something far more tempting.
“Maybe not…” he said slowly, struggling against the rush of emotions. “If we can keep things professional till the end of the shoot.”
“I can be very professional when needed,” Seungcheol promised, his voice threading warmth and mischief. “And we both know how exhilarating it can be when the lines blur.”
Still feeling the tension hang in the air like the last wisps of smoke from a dwindling fire, Jihoon laughed softly. “You’re impossible,” he said again, but the hidden meaning simmered—this time, laced with acceptance and a playful grin.
“And yet, you love it.” Seungcheol smirked, stood directly in front of Jihoon, gaze focused entirely on the photographer.
“And maybe, just maybe, I miss it too,” Jihoon admitted, his voice low and edged with vulnerability. The memories of their last shoot together flooded through him—the late nights, the laughter, the way Seungcheol always seemed to know just when to push and when to pull back.
“See? We’re making progress,” Seungcheol said, his smirk transforming into a genuine smile, one that reached his eyes, causing Jihoon’s heart to skip a beat. “Let’s get through this shoot. Just like old times.”
“Old times,” Jihoon echoed, nostalgia tugging at him. They’d shared moments that felt infinite, slipping through fingers like grains of sand. It felt both right and wrong to even consider rekindling that spark.
Taking a deep breath, Jihoon repositioned his camera, attempting to ground himself in the task at hand. “Okay, let’s see what you’ve got then, Mr. Professional Model.” He raised the camera to his eye, his chest fluttering as he focused on Seungcheol, now poised in front of a backdrop of soft, muted colours.
Seungcheol struck a playful pose, tilting his head just slightly and flashing that infamous grin—the one that had broken down Jihoon’s resolve long ago. There was an ease to their chemistry that couldn’t be ignored.
“Such a natural in front of the camera, aren’t you?” Jihoon teased, letting the shutter click multiple times, capturing Seungcheol in all his candid glory.
“I’ve had an excellent teacher,” Seungcheol replied, the warmth in his voice layered with a hint of something deeper. A compliment, certainly, but Jihoon felt the warmth in his cheeks, a reaction he thought he had long since quelled.
“Just remember, we’re working here,” Jihoon said, trying to maintain a sense of detachment as he lowered the camera. “This isn’t a date.”
“Are you sure?” Seungcheol stepped closer, his gaze piercing as he leaned slightly forward, the playful tension returning between them. “Because it feels like a date to me.”
Jihoon felt a rush of warmth spill into his cheeks, shouting silently in protest but also yearning for the thrill. “We have a shoot to finish,” he insisted, even as his heart thrummed in response to Seungcheol’s presence.
“Then let’s make it an exciting one,” Seungcheol said, stepping back with a flourish, adopting a more exaggerated pose meant for the lens. “Just think of it as art imitating life.”
Closing one eye to the camera lens, Jihoon couldn’t help but snicker out loud and click once more, capturing this playful side of Seungcheol. The shoot continued amidst a mix of laughter and teasing comments, the air crackling with unspoken words and emotions.
As the session progressed, they both instinctively drew closer to each other, the executive façade slipping just momentarily but igniting something Jihoon had almost forgotten existed. Seungcheol was right; when the lines blurred, it did create something exhilarating, leaving Jihoon wondering if he was crafting a simple portfolio or something far more complex—a masterpiece of feelings he had long tucked away.
“Okay, let’s change settings,” Jihoon suggested after some time, desperately needing a distraction from his spiralling thoughts.
“Lead the way,” Seungcheol said, a glint of mischief still dancing in his eyes.
As they moved to a slightly different backdrop in the room, Jihoon found himself stealing glances at the man who had once captivated him so entirely. Maybe being back here, holding the camera in his hands, Seungcheol in front of him, wouldn’t be so bad after all. Maybe this shoot would be less about being too focused on the work and more about allowing himself to feel—whatever this may lead to.
“And Jihoon,” Seungcheol called as they paused to adjust the props. “If things get out of hand, remember I can be very professional when needed.”
Jihoon's heart raced, both at the challenge and the hope laced in his words. Perhaps he wasn’t quite ready to let go of Seungcheol again just yet.
Jihoon took a steadying breath, feeling the heat rise to his cheeks as Seungcheol’s teasing tone lingered in the air. “Out of hand?” he echoed, trying to keep his voice steady, but the playful challenge sent a rush of adrenaline through him. He adjusted the camera strap over his shoulder, feeling the familiar weight as a comfort, yet the heady excitement of mixing work with something profoundly intimate sent his pulse racing.
“Yeah,” Seungcheol smiled, arms crossed over his chest, a confident posture that contrasted with the softness in his eyes. “Let’s just say, I’m good at going wherever the moment takes us.”
Jihoon had always admired that about Seungcheol—the way he embraced spontaneity, the way he could turn the most mundane activity into something vibrant and alive. But now, in the fragile space between them, that spontaneity felt different; it felt charged, like an unspoken promise hanging in the air.
“Alright,” Jihoon responded, a mix of challenge and excitement colouring his voice. “Then let’s make this moment worth remembering.” He raised his camera, framing Seungcheol in his lens. The world outside faded away as he focused. The soft natural light poured in through the large windows, casting a gentle glow on Seungcheol’s features, emphasising the sharpness of his jaw and the warmth in his expressive eyes.
“Just relax this time, be yourself,” Jihoon instructed, and as he pressed the shutter, he caught the moment—a flicker of something genuine in Seungcheol’s smile that made his heart skip. “Perfect.”
“Is this what you meant by a masterpiece?” Seungcheol teased, his brow arched slightly. “You know, I might just let you keep this one if you promise to put it in the hall of fame.”
“Only if you promise to visit,” Jihoon quipped back, the banter flowing more easily now. He felt the tension ease between them, replaced with a playful rhythm that reminded him of the camaraderie they once shared, a bond that had been lost in the chaos of life.
With each click of the camera, Jihoon felt himself slipping deeper into a world where vulnerability and truth intertwined with artistry. He leaned closer, angling for a new perspective, and as he captured Seungcheol lost in thought, Jihoon wondered if he could finally be brave enough to express the feelings he had tucked away for so long.
“If only you could see yourself the way I do,” Jihoon murmured, more to himself than anyone else.
“What do you see?” Seungcheol asked, suddenly serious, piercing through the lightheartedness. It was a simple question, yet its weight hung between them as if he had given Jihoon permission to reveal everything that had been building inside him.
A swirl of emotions threatened to spill over, and Jihoon struggled to keep his composure. But there was a flicker of courage igniting within him, urging him to step beyond the safety of professionalism. “I see someone who makes it easy for me to break out of my shell, someone who reignites a spark in me.”
Seungcheol’s gaze softened, a blend of surprise and something deeper dancing in his eyes. “And if that’s what we’re building, Jihoon, then let’s make sure it’s a beautiful one.”
As he lowered the camera, Jihoon felt the shift, the shift from merely capturing a moment to creating one—together. In that small corner of the studio, where light mingled with shadow, they crafted a new narrative, one laden with the promise of what could be, leaving the past behind, and cautiously stepping towards a future that felt tantalisingly close but simultaneously uncharted for both of them.
