Work Text:
Seeing the griffons in Arlathan, and how at home they look in the forest, rather than surrounded by the filth of the darkspawn, makes him question, not for the first time, the choices of the Wardens before him.
He has to ask for Rook’s help, trust Rook’s judgement, because he can’t trust his own. Arlathan could never be a home for him, Davrin had to leave his clan in search of adventure and of a purpose. So to stand there and for the first time consider that the griffons might need to take the opposite path, that this might be their home and their purpose when it couldn’t be so for him, it sends a tightness to his chest.
His job isn’t to make these griffons into warriors for the Wardens, it’s to protect them. But he needs Rook to say it so that he knows that he’s right, so that he knows that this isn’t another instance of a Warden thinking that they’re doing the right thing for the griffons and failing them once again. But if Rook finds that this is the right thing to do, then Davrin can see the griffons being at home in Arlathan Forest.
