Gotta Catch ‘Em All

Summary:

The Doctor saw Yaz’s old Pokémon cards and decides to get her a few (a lot)

-

Years ago, Yaz would have said to anyone who asked her that she loved the peace and solitude.

It was a chance to unwind from her hectic life and she could stop and maybe pick up a book and just sit, not having to worry about anything.

Now however, she knew the quiet meant one of two things. Either the Doctor was doing repairs somewhere in the great expanse of the TARDIS, maybe somewhere very very far away which is why she couldn’t hear the usual sparks or buzzing, or the blonde was up to something, which was the more concerning of the two options.

Notes:

Hiya!

This is a fic for my dear friend AJ! I hope you love this! It has been in the making for two weeks, and it has been tough making it as good as it could be for you, but it is finally done! This will hopefully counteract the angst!

I have tried to keep this as secret as I can, and when I see you next, I will have the rest of your birthday gift!

Thank you to Reonyea for betaing, you’re amazing! And thank you to Gayestgaytoevergay for being my undercover spy, love you all!

Now please enjoy this chaos!

Work Text:

It was quiet in the TARDIS.

A bit too quiet.

Was the Doctor infinitely old? Yes.

Did that make Yaz any less concerned about her? Absolutely not.

Sighing, Yaz reluctantly got up from their purple sofa and went in search of the Doctor.

It was sometimes a lost cause looking for the Timelord, she could try and fail and end up having to go back and wait, but she would kick herself if she didn’t at least try and prevent any possible disaster.

As she walked through the corridors, she passed a door that was slightly ajar and she just knew that the Doctor was up to something in there.

She gently pushed it open, the cool metal a solid weight under her hand.

She didn’t even have a second to collect her thoughts before the manic blonde had rushed up, right into her personal space, with a face-splitting grin that totally signalled some sort of misdoing.

“Hi Yaz! Hi! Knew you’d come lookin’ for me!” she exclaimed before rushing away, leaving a blur of rainbows and coattails in her wake.

“What’s all this?” Yaz asked, looking around as she followed just a pace or so behind.

“Well yano how we were visiting your home a few days ago? Well I saw y’had some o’those Pokémon cards and I thought I could try and get you some!” she said, coming to a dramatic stop, forcing Yaz to bump right into her and get blinded by yellow.

Yaz swiped the Doctor’s hair from her face as she righted herself and finally took a look at what the Doctor had prepared on the table she had stopped in front of.

‘Some’ Pokémon cards was an understatement.

“Doctor, where on eart- in the universe did you get all those?”

Taking a better look at the spread around the table, she spotted boxes and booster packs of Paldean Fates, Paldea Evolved, 151, and Prismatic Evolutions.

“I Kerblammed it!”

“But they’re from Earth? This is the new set.” Yaz said, pointing at the Prismatic Evolutions elite trainer box on the table.

“Don’t ask me…guess they just had a lot of stock left from a few hundred years ago or summat,” she said, sounding not entirely convinced herself.

“In perfect condition?”

“Yeah, lucky that, innit?”

“Babe, did you nick these?”

“How could you ever think so low of me?” she gasped, clutching a hand to both of her hearts. Before looking awfully guilty under the intense gaze of the policewoman, who watched her like she was a toddler who lied about eating a cookie from the jar. “Look, it don’t count as stealin’ if I got your sister to get them for me, it were super easy.”

“Did you pay her back?”

“Ye-“ she began before the Timelord was cut off by a loud ding from Yaz’s phone, which prompted a raised eyebrow at her attempted answer.

“This is a bill for four hundred quid from Sonya,” Yaz said, slightly amused. ”So, that answers that then. YOU DID STEAL IT!”

“Very different things, Yaz,” she claimed, grabbing one of the Lost Origins boxes and presenting it to her partner.

“Wait, so if you got Sonya to get them, how did you get these older ones?” Waving at the box in illustration.

“Well I, yano, just went back and got a few,” the Doctor said casually, shrugging her shoulders.

Yaz wasn’t sure what to say, to be honest. The Doctor was kind, of course she was, but Yaz didn’t think that she would go to all that trouble just to get Yaz a few pieces of cardboard.

She was beginning to tear up as she looked at her girlfriend, “You shouldn’t have, this is too much.”

“Oh don’t cry, if you don’t like them, you can just tell me!” she replied, putting down the box and placing her arm around the other woman’s shoulders.

“No, no, I love them.”

“Awh brilliant.” Then with a clap of her hands, the alien dropped a kiss to her hairline then rushed away and stood on the other side of the table, raising her hands to show off the selection. “Choose your pick then!”

She browsed the possible options before settling on the set of Prismatic Evolutions Elite Trainer Box just next to the blonde’s hand.

“Nice choice!“ the Doctor said, pretending she knew what she was talking about.

Handing over the box, they sat down on the floor, Yaz carefully lowering herself, while the Doctor plopped down quickly, complaining with a scowl when her arse hit the ground.

“So, what now?” the Doctor asked, slightly perplexed and wondering if the art on the box was all that there was to it.

“We open the box, then we open the packs inside.” Yaz replied, removing the plastic wrapping and removing the top sleeve and guide.

She gently removed the lid from the top of the box and she heard an excited gasp from beside her. Then a quick paced shuffle, and then a shoulder resting gently on her shoulder, blonde hair now tickling her cheek.

Yaz removed the cardboard piece, then pulled the Eevee full art foil promo into view, the Doctor oooing into her ear.

“Yaz look! It's so cute! We’re having such good luck already!” she said, and Yaz didn’t have the heart to tell her that the Eevee was guaranteed, so instead she bit her tongue and took out the sleeves to look at.

Once the contents of the box had been thoroughly examined by the Doctor, who at one point used her sonic to scan the dice, they moved onto the booster packs.

The Doctor was very gracious and split the nine packs as four to herself and five to the brunette, which also meant that Yaz was starting.

Holding her breath, she slowly ripped open the foil of the pack, and took away the code card, before performing the card trick of one card from the back to the front.

The Doctor, for how excitable she often was, was very silent and still throughout the process, seemingly just as captivated by the potential hits as Yaz was.

“Shiny Basic leaf energy, Black Belt’s Training, Riolu, Professor’s research, Duskull, Suicune, Ogre’s mask, Carmine, Sneasel, anddddddd…Whimsicott,” she read out, as she revealed each card one by one, a slightly disappointed frown gracing her face at the final card. Her frown didn’t last long however, as the Doctor was still very much excited by the very basic cards she had pulled, reminding her of how she was when she was a kid.

“My turn!” The alien declared, as she copied what Yaz had done previously. “Basic energy, which is this one?”

“Electric, babe.”

“Basic electric energy, Hoothoot, Dreepy, Miltank, Riolu as well, uhhh Slowking, Binding Mochi, Houndour, Heatran, andddd…Dudunsparce.” With a grin, she grabbed a sleeve from the pile and put it on the Hoothoot and Dudunsparce.

They continued through the packs with very little success in terms of value of the cards, however Yaz felt this was very valuable in terms of getting to spend time with her wonderful and thoughtful and very childish girlfriend.

“Well, last pack, let’s hope for some last pack magic.”

“Which cards are we lookin’ for?” The Doctor suddenly asked.

“Any of the Special Illustration Rares of the Eeveelutions. Specifically Umbreon or Sylveon though.”

Yaz began to open the pack, but much slower, trying to build anticipation, which wasn’t really necessary with how easily the Doctor was captivated by something, but she did so nonetheless.

“Leaf energy, Black Belt’s Training, Budew, Pupitar, Eevee, Bronzong, Techno Radar, Dipplin, Sneasel, and OH MY STARS, BABE.” Yaz screamed, having lifted up the Sneasel to reveal the Umbreon ex special illustration rare.

“Ahhhhhh I knew you’d get it! Last pack really were magic then weren’t it?!”

Yaz was speechless, totally speechless. She was more than happy just opening packs with her partner and getting nothing of worth, but she couldn’t believe that she had pulled the chase card here.

Shaking slightly, Yaz grabbed a sleeve and very, very carefully placed the valuable card inside.

“Right then, guess we should carry on!”

“Allons y!”

Apparently Yaz had used up all her luck getting the Umbreon and her girlfriend, so the next dozen or so booster packs contained nothing of value nor Pokémon she liked.

She was now opening a pack of Paldea Evolved, as she recalled opening this set not too long ago.

“Fighting energy, Gothita, Marill, Wingull, Pineco, Oranguru, Electrode, Grafaiai, Noibat, Wattrel, andddd…Closhire! I love Clod, such a little guy.”

“Ooo I like him too!”

“One of me mates is obsessed with Clodshire, got AJ a plushie recently and a Japanese version of this card.”

“That’s so sweet, and yeah I can see why they like him.”

The pair of them finished opening the remaining six packs between them, before Yaz called it.

“I reckon that’s been enough for today. Thank you for doing this, it was so thoughtful.”

“‘Course Yaz, I’d do owt for ya, just ask and I’ll try me best to make it happen.”

“I love you, this was a lot of fun, can’t wait to open the rest with you.”
