Chapter Text
The hotel suite was dimly lit, warm golden light casting soft shadows across the sleek furniture. Claire had arrived twenty minutes early, as she always did, making sure the space was arranged to her liking—nothing personal, nothing intimate, just a stage carefully set for the illusion of closeness.
She checked her phone one last time. James Fraser. The name was simple, unassuming. He had booked her for the evening through an exclusive service, one that catered to men who didn’t want just anyone. Discretion, professionalism, and quality—Claire prided herself on all three.
And yet, something about this booking made her pause.
A first-time client. No regulars vouching for him. No extensive history in the system. That wasn’t necessarily uncommon—many men only sought this kind of companionship once, out of curiosity, loneliness, or because they wanted something they couldn't find elsewhere. Still, Claire had learned to trust her instincts, and something about this one made her pay attention.
Then came the knock. Firm. Uncertain.
Claire smoothed the silk of her dress, took a breath, and opened the door.
He was taller than she expected. Broad-shouldered, dressed simply in a dark jacket and a button-down that stretched across his chest. A soldier’s stance, she noted instinctively—back straight, weight evenly distributed, as if always prepared to move. But his face…
She hadn’t expected him to be so handsome.
"Jamie?" she asked, tilting her head.
He blinked, as if startled to hear his own name from her lips. Then he cleared his throat. "Aye. James, but… aye." His voice was deep, smooth with a Scottish lilt that she hadn’t anticipated.
Claire stepped aside, letting him enter. He hesitated for a fraction of a second before stepping in, his movements controlled, deliberate.
The door clicked shut behind him.
"Would you like a drink?" she asked, turning towards the small bar.
Jamie exhaled, looking around as if trying to ground himself. "Aye. Whisky, if ye have it."
Of course, he wanted whisky. She smiled to herself, pouring him a glass from the crystal decanter. When she handed it to him, his fingers brushed against hers—a fleeting touch, but enough to make her aware of how warm his skin was.
"So," she said, settling onto the couch. "You're new to this."
Jamie sat across from her, rolling the glass between his hands. "That obvious?"
"Just a little." She crossed her legs, studying him. "Most men who book me for the first time either act as if they do it all the time, or they can’t meet my eyes. You’re neither."
He huffed a small laugh, shaking his head. "Wasn't sure I'd go through with it."
"But you did."
"Aye," he admitted, taking a slow sip of his drink. "Guess I was curious."
"About what?"
Jamie met her gaze then, blue eyes sharp but thoughtful. "What it's like. To be with someone without… expectation."
That caught Claire off guard.
She had expected the usual reasons—loneliness, stress relief, maybe even power. But Jamie Fraser, with his quiet intensity, wasn’t looking for any of that.
He was looking for something else entirely.
"You mean without complications," she corrected smoothly.
"Maybe." He took another sip, then leaned forward, elbows resting on his knees. "Or maybe I just wanted to feel something different."
There was something raw in his voice, something unspoken. Claire wasn’t sure why it unsettled her.
"Well," she said, setting down her own untouched drink. "Let's see what we can do about that."
She stood, crossing the small space between them, stepping between his knees. Jamie didn’t move, didn’t reach for her, but she could feel the way his breath hitched, the way his body tensed in anticipation.
She leaned in, brushing her fingers lightly along his jaw. His skin was rough with stubble, warm beneath her fingertips.
"You're allowed to touch me," she murmured.
Jamie exhaled slowly, his hands lifting to rest at her hips. Hesitant, almost reverent.
Claire smiled. "See? That wasn’t so hard."
Jamie huffed a laugh, but it faded quickly when she leaned in closer, pressing a slow, lingering kiss to the corner of his mouth.
He turned his head slightly, letting their lips meet fully. And suddenly, that hesitation was gone.
His hands tightened at her waist, his mouth claiming hers in a kiss that was anything but uncertain. Slow, but deep. Measured, but hungry. He tasted of whisky and something unnameable—something dangerous.
Claire had been kissed hundreds of times, by men of all kinds. But this… this was different.
Jamie Fraser kissed like a man who hadn’t done this in a long time—or perhaps, like someone who had never kissed quite like this before.
There was no rush, no eager fumbling. Just deep, measured hunger.
Claire felt the tension in his body, the restraint in his hands where they gripped her waist. He was holding back, testing the edges of his own control.
She shouldn’t have liked that as much as she did.
She shifted forward, pressing her body into his. His breath hitched, and she caught the way his fingers flexed against her hips before he forced them to still.
"You're holding back," she murmured against his lips.
Jamie exhaled sharply, forehead brushing hers. "Aye."
"You don't have to."
His hands tightened. "I do."
Claire pulled back slightly, studying him. His eyes were dark, the blue deepened with something she couldn’t quite name.
"Why?" she asked.
Jamie’s jaw tensed. He didn’t answer immediately, just let his gaze drift over her face as if debating how much to say.
"I didna come here for this," he admitted finally, voice rough.
Claire arched a brow. "Oh? And what exactly did you come here for?"
Jamie let out a quiet breath, his hands sliding over her waist in slow, deliberate strokes.
"Company," he said at last. "A moment. Something that doesna feel… hollow."
It was an unexpected answer.
Most men came to her for escape. For release. For pleasure without strings.
Jamie Fraser came looking for something else.
Claire should have kept the distance between them then, should have stepped back and given him the illusion of control. Instead, she ran her fingers down the line of his throat, feeling the way he swallowed beneath her touch.
"You don’t seem hollow to me," she murmured.
Jamie made a sound—part laugh, part something else entirely.
"Ye dinna know me, lass."
No, she didn’t. But she wanted to.
The thought unsettled her, more than anything else had that night.
She was always careful to keep a divide between herself and her clients. A performance, a practiced skill. She knew how to be exactly what they needed for a few hours, and then she walked away, untouched.
But Jamie wasn’t playing by those rules.
His hands slid to her back, splaying wide as he finally let himself touch her fully.
Claire shivered, the heat of his palms seeping through the thin silk of her dress.
"I think," she whispered, leaning in to brush her lips over his jaw, "you want to lose control a little."
Jamie made a low sound in his throat, something between a growl and a curse. His grip on her tightened, and the last of his restraint snapped.
The next kiss wasn’t slow.
It wasn’t careful.
It was deep and consuming, his hands sliding up her back, tangling in her hair as he pulled her closer. Claire gasped against his mouth, and Jamie took advantage of it, deepening the kiss until she felt it everywhere.
He pulled her onto his lap effortlessly, large hands spanning her thighs, gripping them as though grounding himself.
Claire rocked against him, just slightly, testing him.
Jamie groaned, his head dropping to her shoulder. His breath was hot against her skin, ragged and uneven.
"Christ," he muttered.
Claire smirked, running her fingers through the short curls at the nape of his neck.
"I thought you wanted control," she teased.
Jamie lifted his head, his gaze locking onto hers. There was something dark in his eyes now, something dangerous and deeply, deeply male.
"I did," he murmured. "I dinna think I do anymore."
A thrill ran through her at his words.
Then, suddenly, Jamie shifted—one swift movement, and she was in his arms.
Claire barely had time to gasp before he lifted her, standing from the couch in one fluid motion, his hands strong beneath her thighs.
She clung to him, legs wrapping instinctively around his waist as he carried her toward the bed.
Jamie lowered her down onto the cool sheets, following her down, his weight settling over her, solid and real.
Claire sucked in a breath, heat pooling low in her belly.
"You’re stronger than you look," she murmured.
Jamie smirked, running his hands up her bare thighs, pushing the fabric of her dress higher.
"Aye," he agreed, voice low. "I am."
His hands were large, warm, calloused. They traced over her skin in slow, deliberate strokes, mapping her out like he wanted to memorize every inch of her.
Claire arched beneath him, biting her lip as his lips found the curve of her throat.
"You’re paying for the whole night," she reminded him breathlessly. "You don’t have to rush."
Jamie lifted his head, eyes burning into hers.
"Lass," he said, voice rough, "I promise ye, I’m no’ rushing."
Claire shivered, anticipation coiling tight in her belly.
Jamie Fraser took his time.
For all his restraint before, now that he had given in, he wasn’t rushing. Instead, he touched her with a slow, deliberate reverence that made Claire’s breath catch.
His hands traced up the length of her thighs, calloused fingers dragging along soft skin. He bunched the silk of her dress higher, exposing more of her, but he didn’t push further—yet. Instead, he studied her, as if memorizing the sight of her beneath him.
Claire shifted, her breath shallow. "You’re staring."
Jamie’s lips quirked, his fingertips ghosting along the inside of her knee. "Aye."
"Do you always take this long?" she teased, though her voice was softer than she intended.
Jamie hummed, his hand sliding higher, just enough to make her inhale sharply. "Only when I want to."
Her pulse spiked. There was something about the way he said it—confident, assured. This was a man who knew his own strength, his own presence, and yet, he was holding himself back just enough to let her feel the weight of anticipation.
He lowered himself slightly, pressing his mouth to the curve of her throat. His lips were warm, his stubble grazing her skin in a way that sent a shiver down her spine.
Claire tilted her head, giving him more access, and Jamie took it—his mouth moved lower, down the column of her throat, over the delicate line of her collarbone. His hands slid beneath the thin straps of her dress, easing them down over her shoulders.
"You're beautiful," he murmured, his voice rough against her skin.
Claire wasn’t used to words meaning much in moments like this. Men said things in bed that they didn’t mean, sweet nothings designed for seduction rather than sincerity.
But Jamie said it like he meant it.
She pulled him closer, her fingers threading into the short curls at the back of his head as he kissed his way lower. When his mouth found the swell of her breast, she gasped, her back arching instinctively.
Jamie groaned, his grip on her tightening as he took his time tasting her. His mouth was hot and slow, lips and tongue working in a way that had Claire gripping his shoulders, her thighs shifting around his hips.
"Jamie," she murmured, not sure if it was a plea or a warning.
He lifted his head, his blue eyes dark and unreadable. "Aye, mo nighean donn?"
She didn’t know what he’d just called her, but the deep lilt of his voice sent heat curling low in her belly.
"You like to tease," she noted, her nails digging slightly into his shoulders.
Jamie smirked, his hands sliding lower, over the curve of her waist, the dip of her hips.
"I like to hear ye gasp like that," he admitted.
Claire exhaled sharply, her pulse pounding. "Then maybe you should make me do it again."
Jamie’s smirk deepened, and then he did just that.
His hands slid beneath the fabric of her dress, fingers hooking around the lace of her underwear. He pulled them down slowly, dragging the sensation out, before tossing them aside.
He kissed his way lower, down the line of her stomach, until she realized exactly where he was going.
Claire sucked in a breath. "You don’t have to—"
Jamie stilled, his lips hovering just above her hip. "Has no one ever—?"
Claire swallowed, heat prickling over her skin. "Not like that."
Jamie exhaled slowly, his grip on her tightening.
"Lass," he murmured, his voice dark with promise, "ye dinna ken what you’ve been missing."
And then he showed her exactly what she had been missing.
Claire gasped as his mouth found her, slow and deliberate, his tongue moving with practiced, devastating skill. Heat exploded through her, her fingers twisting in the sheets as she struggled to keep herself grounded.
Jamie groaned against her, his hands gripping her thighs, keeping her exactly where he wanted her. Every movement was intentional, drawing her higher and higher until she was trembling beneath him.
She didn’t mean to say his name, but it fell from her lips in a desperate whisper.
Jamie growled softly, his fingers digging into her skin. "That’s it, lass," he murmured against her, sending a fresh wave of pleasure spiraling through her.
It built too quickly, her body tightening, her breath coming in shallow gasps.
"Jamie," she choked out, "I—"
"Let go," he said, his voice dark and commanding. "Dinna fight it."
And then he pushed her over the edge.
Pleasure crashed through her in waves, her back arching, a soft cry escaping her lips as she unraveled completely.
Jamie didn’t stop until she was spent, until she lay trembling beneath him, her breath uneven.
Slowly, he kissed his way back up her body, his lips lingering at the hollow of her throat before he finally met her gaze.
Claire exhaled, her fingers still tangled in his hair. "That was…" She trailed off, not sure how to finish the sentence.
Jamie smirked, clearly pleased with himself. "Aye."
She huffed a quiet laugh, running a hand through his curls. "You’re entirely too smug for your own good."
Jamie’s expression softened slightly, and he brushed a thumb over her cheek, his gaze searching.
"It was good, then?" he asked, quieter this time.
Claire blinked, caught off guard by the question.
It wasn’t a cocky remark. It wasn’t meant to stroke his ego. He genuinely wanted to know.
Something warm unfurled in her chest.
Instead of answering, she pulled him down into a slow, lingering kiss.
Jamie groaned softly, pressing closer, the weight of him settling over her in a way that felt impossibly right.
Claire knew this was just a job. Just a night.
And yet, as she tangled her legs around his, pulling him down into her warmth, she couldn’t help but wonder—
Why does this feel like something else?
Jamie Fraser was heavy above her, solid and real in a way that felt anything but transactional.
Claire had been with men before—plenty of them. But not like this. Not with a man who looked at her like he saw her. Not with a man who touched her like he wasn’t just seeking pleasure, but something deeper, something more.
Jamie kissed her deeply, his body pressing into hers, his hands sliding along the length of her bare thighs. He was still fully clothed, but she could feel the heat of him, the tension in his muscles as he held himself just barely in check.
Claire arched beneath him, her fingers trailing down his chest, finding the buttons of his shirt. She flicked them open, one by one, until the fabric fell away and she could finally see him—strong, broad, his skin warm beneath her touch.
Jamie sucked in a breath as she dragged her hands over his stomach, tracing the ridges of muscle, the faint scars that told a story she hadn’t yet heard.
She wanted to ask.
She didn’t.
Instead, she pushed the shirt off his shoulders, watching as he shrugged it away, his gaze locked onto hers.
"Your turn," she murmured.
Jamie’s lips quirked, but his eyes darkened as he hooked his fingers into the straps of her dress and eased them down, slowly, deliberately, until the fabric pooled at her waist, leaving her bare beneath him.
He exhaled sharply, his hands tracing up her sides, his thumbs skimming over her ribs.
"You're beautiful," he said again, but this time, it was different. Rougher. Almost awestruck.
Claire swallowed hard. She should have brushed it off, made a teasing remark, kept the emotional distance that usually came so easily to her.
But she couldn’t.
Instead, she reached for him, pulling him down into another kiss.
Jamie groaned, his hands sliding down, gripping her thighs as he settled more fully between them. She could feel the heat of him now, the hard press of his arousal through his jeans, and a fresh wave of desire coiled deep in her belly.
Claire shifted, wrapping her legs around his waist, rocking against him just enough to draw a sharp inhale from his lips.
Jamie’s grip tightened.
"Lass," he warned, his forehead pressing against hers.
Claire smirked, tilting her hips again, deliberately teasing. "Yes?"
Jamie let out a low growl, then sat up just enough to reach for his belt. Claire watched, breathless, as he unfastened it, his movements slow and controlled.
But his hands weren’t steady.
That knowledge sent a fresh thrill through her.
Jamie Fraser was unraveling.
And she was the reason why.
She helped him push his jeans down, her hands eager as she traced over newly exposed skin.
Jamie groaned as she wrapped a hand around him, stroking lightly, testing him.
He swore under his breath, then caught her wrist, stilling her.
"Ye keep doin’ that, lass," he murmured, his voice rough, "and this will be over sooner than either of us wants."
Claire grinned, but before she could respond, Jamie had shifted, settling between her thighs once more.
He kissed her again—deep, slow, possessive—as he positioned himself at her entrance.
Claire gasped as he pushed forward, stretching her inch by inch, filling her completely.
"Christ," Jamie muttered against her lips.
Claire could barely breathe, could barely think. He was so warm, so thick, every inch of him pressing into her until there was nothing left between them.
She shifted, arching beneath him, and Jamie groaned, his hands gripping her hips, holding her still as he fought for control.
"Give in," she whispered.
Jamie exhaled sharply. "Ye sure?"
Claire didn’t answer with words. Instead, she rolled her hips, tightening her legs around his waist, urging him deeper.
Jamie swore again, then finally—finally—began to move.
His thrusts were slow at first, measured, as if he wanted to savor every moment.
But then Claire moaned, her nails digging into his back, and whatever restraint he had left snapped.
Jamie groaned, his pace quickening, his movements rougher now, deeper.
Claire met each thrust, her body arching, fire pooling low in her belly.
"Jamie," she gasped, the pleasure mounting, spiraling.
He kissed her fiercely, his hand sliding between them, his fingers finding the most sensitive part of her.
Claire cried out, her body shattering around him, waves of pleasure crashing through her, leaving her gasping, trembling.
Jamie followed a moment later, his grip tightening, his head dropping to her shoulder as he groaned her name, his body shuddering against hers.
For a long moment, neither of them moved, their breaths mingling, their bodies still tangled.
Then Jamie exhaled, his lips brushing against her temple.
"That," he murmured, "was more than I expected."
Claire swallowed, her fingers trailing over the damp skin of his back.
It was more than she had expected, too.
Jamie Fraser had no illusions about what this was supposed to be.
A transaction. A temporary escape.
He had booked the night knowing full well what he was paying for—no strings, no expectations, no complications.
And yet, as he lay on his back, his skin still slick with sweat, his breath still uneven, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something had shifted.
Claire was still beside him, her body warm against the sheets, her breathing steady as she stared at the ceiling. She had the look of someone already preparing to detach, her mind moving ahead to whatever came next.
Jamie wasn’t ready for that.
Not yet.
He turned his head slightly, watching her in the dim light. "Do ye always leave right after?"
Claire blinked, as if surprised he was still engaging. She turned her head, meeting his gaze, and for the first time since the night began, she hesitated.
"Sometimes," she admitted. "Depends on the client."
Jamie exhaled through his nose. "And me?"
Claire studied him for a moment, then smirked. "You’re still conscious, so that’s a good sign."
Jamie huffed a quiet laugh, but the weight in his chest remained. He let the silence stretch between them for a moment before asking, "Ye really never wonder why men do this?"
Claire propped herself up on one elbow, watching him. "No, Jamie. I know exactly why men do this."
"Aye? And what’s that?"
She shrugged one bare shoulder. "Sex is easy. Life is hard."
Jamie considered that, running a hand down his face. "Maybe."
Claire arched a brow. "Not convinced?"
Jamie was quiet for a beat, his fingers tracing patterns against the sheet. Then, finally, he admitted, "I didna come here just for sex."
Claire didn’t move. She didn’t react the way most people might have—no pity, no judgment. Just a slow inhale as she processed his words.
"What, then?"
Jamie swallowed, his throat tight.
"I wanted to feel… something I could control."
That was it. That was the thing sitting heavy in his chest all night, the reason why this felt different, why it wasn’t as simple as he had expected.
Claire nodded slightly, as if she understood. "Because so much of your life isn’t in your control."
Jamie let out a short breath, half a laugh, half something else. "Ye could say that."
Claire didn’t press, didn’t ask for details. Instead, she reached for the bedside table, grabbing the water bottle she had left there earlier. She took a sip before handing it to him.
Jamie accepted it without thinking, taking a long drink before setting it down.
"You’re not the first man to say that," Claire said finally.
Jamie turned his head toward her. "No?"
She shook her head. "Control. Escape. Feeling something real in a space where nothing matters outside of this room. It’s not just you."
Jamie clenched his jaw, looking at the ceiling. "Aye, but I think I needed to hear myself say it."
Claire hummed in agreement. "Sometimes saying it out loud makes it real."
They sat in silence for a moment, a different kind of intimacy settling between them.
Jamie turned onto his side, facing her fully now. "And what about ye?"
Claire blinked. "What about me?"
Jamie studied her, his gaze sharp. "Why do you do this?"
She didn’t answer immediately. For a moment, Jamie thought she might deflect, turn the question back on him. But then she exhaled, shifting onto her back again, staring at the ceiling as if the answer was written there.
"Because I like knowing where the lines are," she admitted. "I like knowing exactly what’s expected of me. No surprises, no disappointments."
Jamie frowned slightly. "Sounds lonely."
Claire smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes. "It’s practical."
Jamie watched her for a long moment, considering that.
"Does it ever stop feeling like a job?" he asked quietly.
Claire turned her head to look at him.
"No," she said honestly. "But sometimes, it doesn’t only feel like one."
Jamie swallowed, something heavy settling in his chest.
This—whatever had happened between them tonight—wasn’t something he could walk away from easily. And from the way Claire was looking at him, her expression unreadable but her breath just slightly uneven—
She felt it too.
Neither of them said anything after that.
But they didn’t move apart either.
Claire didn’t stay.
Eventually, the weight of the night settled between them, and she did what she always did—slipped from the bed, dressed in silence, and prepared to leave without ceremony.
Jamie watched her from where he lay, his body still loose from pleasure but his mind unwilling to settle.
He should have let her go.
But something about this night felt different.
“Claire,” he said, his voice quiet but firm.
She turned slightly, meeting his gaze.
Jamie exhaled. “I hope ye find whatever it is you’re looking for.”
Claire hesitated, her fingers tightening around the strap of her purse.
Then, for the first time in a long time, she admitted, “I don’t know what that is.”
Jamie gave a slow nod. “Aye. I know the feeling.”
They didn’t say anything more.
And then Claire left.
Jamie lay awake long after the door clicked shut, staring at the ceiling, trying to shake the feeling that he’d just lost something he was never meant to keep.
One Year Later
Claire had spent months convincing herself she had done the right thing.
Leaving. Changing. Choosing something different.
Her past wasn’t something she could erase, but it wasn’t something she wanted to carry forward either.
So she left.
The city. The work. The carefully drawn lines she had built around herself.
Now, she was here. A war zone. A Red Cross field hospital. A place where she could be more than what she had been before.
It wasn’t about atonement. It wasn’t about redemption.
It was about becoming.
And then, on a night thick with smoke and the distant sound of gunfire, he walked in.
Jamie Fraser, standing in the doorway of her medical tent, dust and blood streaking his uniform, a rifle slung over his back.
The moment their eyes met, Claire’s breath caught.
It had been a year.
A long, endless year.
But Jamie hadn’t forgotten.
And neither had she.
He stepped forward, slow and deliberate, as if making sure she was real.
“Claire.”
Her throat tightened. “Jamie.”
A medic rushed past them, breaking the moment, but neither of them moved.
Finally, Jamie exhaled, shaking his head slightly. “Didn’t think I’d see ye again.”
Claire swallowed. “Neither did I.”
Jamie studied her, taking in the scrubs, the Red Cross patch on her shoulder. “Ye look… different.”
She let out a slow breath. “I am.”
Jamie nodded, his lips twitching slightly. “Aye. Me too.”
They stood there, a breath of silence between them, the past pressing close but not suffocating.
Not anymore.
Jamie tilted his head slightly. “Ye in a hurry?”
Claire hesitated, then shook her head.
Jamie smirked, just barely. “Then stay a while.”
Claire exhaled. Then, finally—finally—she smiled.
And maybe, just maybe, this was the beginning of something new.
