Chapter Text
“Liam, don’t—“ Liam ignored Mason’s plead, continuing to walk towards the bus. He hadn’t seen or spoken to Brett for nearly two months. Obviously he was curious (and kind of eager) to see him again. Even if they’d apparently hated each other now.
“Brett!” Liam yelled upon approaching the taller boy. He couldn’t help but be so angry with him after how he’d acted when Liam explained what he’d done to his coach’s car. Sure, it was awful of him to do, but Liam always thought that Brett, of all people, would be there for him. He couldn’t have been more wrong.
Brett looked down towards the shorter boy. Liam took note that he was still as beautiful as ever. He stared into his ex-boyfriend’s eyes momentarily before continuing, “I just wanted to say,” He saw Brett raise his eyebrows, looking somewhat amused. “Have a good game,” Liam reach out his hand, hoping for a mere touch of Brett’s hand against his.
He realized he wasn’t going to get that when Brett snarled at him and started to laugh in his face. He suddenly felt incredibly stupid. Of course nothing had changed. Why would it be any different? Brett still hated him, and Liam had never felt so embarrassed.
“That’s cute, Liam. Is that what they told you to say in anger management? Apologize, and everything’s fine?” Liam flinched at the harsh tone and mention of his anger. He looked to his feet, nails digging into his palms. Well, more like claws. Brett continued, “you demolished coach’s car.”
“I paid for it.” Liam said through gritted teeth, claws digging deeper into his palms. He’d texted so many times, trying desperately to apologize for what he did. Eventually, the messages quit going through, and Liam knew it was over.
“Yeah, you’re gonna pay for it,” Brett stepped closer, their faces now inches apart. Liam wanted so badly to have him back. To have Brett forgive him. “We’re going to break you in half out there. And it’s gonna be all your fault.” Brett stepped even closer, causing Liam to stumble backwards. This was a terrible idea. Liam was starting to lose control, a low growl building up in his throat.
Before anything could get bad, Liam was being dragged away by Scott. He noticed Brett staring after him, a look of realization on his face. Liam knew of werewolves before he was turned. Brett had told him all about them, and how he was one himself. Liam remembers thinking it was so cool; being a werewolf. A born one at that.
———
“Liam. There’s something i’ve been wanting to tell you,” Brett’s soft voice sounded through Liam’s ears. He rolled over, Brett’s left arm still under his head, fingers carding through his hair. Liam smiled, leaning forward to kiss his boyfriend’s lips gently.
“What is it?” Liam asked, nuzzling his nose under Brett’s chin, tangling their legs together under the blankets. If there was anything Liam loved; it was cuddling. Brett smiled at his boy, moving to run his finger up and down Liam’s arm lightly.
“Well,” Brett paused, and Liam thought he sounded really nervous. Which was strange, because it’s Brett. Brett’s never nervous. “Liam. Do you believe in werewolves?” And Liam couldn’t help but giggle. He stopped the instant he felt his boyfriend tense up. He was serious. Liam pulled back, looking at Brett.
”I mean, I guess anything’s possible, right? I wouldn’t really believe something like that unless I saw it with my own eyes, you know?” Liam shrugged, and Brett was the one laughing this time. Liam was confused.
“What if I told you they were real? Would you believe me?” Liam smiled. Honestly, he’d believe anything Brett told him. Werewolves, though? That was a bit crazy.
“Where is this coming from, Brett? I mean, are you trying to tell me you’re a werewolf or something?” Liam chuckled, and the look on Brett’s face had Liam scooting away even further. Not because he was afraid, but because he was shocked. “No… Is this a joke?” Brett shook his head.
“I’ve wanted to tell you for a while now, and I can show you, if you promise not to freak out.” Brett finally spoke up, looking his boyfriend in the eye, a small smile on his face. Liam nodded, reaching to grab Brett’s hand in his.
“I promise,” Liam placed another kiss on his lips. Brett sighed before closing his eyes. Liam watched as his face changed, fangs emerging from his mouth. When Brett finally opened his eyes, they were a pretty mix of yellow and amber.
To say Liam was amazed would be an understatement. The strangest thing was; Liam wasn’t afraid at all. He thought Brett looked beautiful. He squeezed his boyfriend’s hand in his, and reach his other hand up to touch Brett’s face. Liam found himself running his fingers down the side of the werewolf’s face, tracing every detail. He then ran his fingers over the older boys lips; thumb grazing his fangs gently.
”Whoa. You look…” Liam was at loss for words. He was so fascinated by all of this. His boyfriend was a fucking werewolf, for fucks sake.
“Like a monster?” Brett mumbled under his breath, closing his eyes again. And Liam was so upset that Brett would even think that’s what he was going to say.
“Beautiful. You look so beautiful, Brett.” Liam said before leaning in, giving his boyfriend a long kiss. Brett kissed back, eagerly, and Liam ran his tongue over the sharp fangs in his mouth.
They pulled back for air a few minutes later, and Brett shifted back to his human side, rolling onto his back. Liam rested his head on Brett’s chest, resting his eyes. He could stay right here forever.
“I love you so much. Nothing would ever change that. Werewolves are fucking awesome, dude. I can’t believe I get date one.” Liam said, tangling their legs together once more. Brett smiled widely, placing one last kiss to Liam’s head.
”I love you, Liam. Always and forever.” Liam grinned at that, and they both drifted off to sleep; clinging to one another as if one would dare to leave.
———
Sharing a locker room with another team was never very easy. There was hardly enough room for their own team, let alone two. Liam pushed passed everyone, attempting to get to his locker, ignoring the snide comments from Devonford’s players. He grabbed his gear from his locker, going to shut it when someone stopped him. Liam looked over to see Brett standing beside of him, shirtless. Damn, was he fucking hot.
“He bit you, didn’t he? The true alpha.” Brett leaned down to whisper into Liam’s ear. The shorter boy couldn’t help the blush that crept up onto his cheeks at the sudden closeness. Liam snapped out of it and furrowed his brows, pushing Brett away slightly. Was he serious right now?
“Really, Brett? That’s what you want to talk about after months of ignoring me?” Liam raised his voice a little, getting extremely frustrated. Brett just fucking shrugged. Liam wanted to kill him.
“I can smell it. When did he turn you? Was it forced, or did you ask him too?” Brett asked, completely ignoring Liam’s question. Liam just scoffed, walking away as fast as he could. He would rather change outside than deal with this right now. Apparently, Brett decided not to follow him across the room, seeing as he was still standing at Liam’s locker looking like a puppy who’d just been kicked.
Liam knew it was going to be a long night. But he also knew that there was an assassin on the lacrosse team who might be trying to kill someone tonight. So, Brett wasn’t his only problem to deal with, unfortunately.
Once he finally got into his full lacrosse uniform, he followed with the other guys out the door, sending one last glance to Brett on his way out. Sighing, Liam made his way over to his teams’ bench, sitting his drink down and walking up to the sideline, ready to play and get this night over with. Preferably without getting hurt by the other team, or dying.
“I think Liam should sit this game out, coach. His leg is still hurting him,” Liam overheard Scott talking to their coach and he couldn’t help but roll his eyes. Fortunately, he didn’t have time to listen any further when Brett’s voice rang in his ears, now.
“Hey, Liam! Think fast,” with that, Liam looked to see a ball flying right at his face. He moved as quickly as possible, catching the lacrosse ball with his bare hand. Fuck, did it hurt like a bitch. He didn’t so much care about that, though. He was more concerned about the shock on his ex-boyfriend’s face. Priceless.
“Oh, he plays,” Liam smirked upon hearing his coach’s words. Scott was treating him like a child. He’d prove that he could do this without losing control. Before running out on the field, Liam looked toward Garrett. He was staring at Brett with a murdererous look in his eye. Sure, Liam does that, too. But something was different.
Something was not right. If Garrett is the assassin, and looking at Brett like he’s about to make him his new fur coat, Liam had to watch his back… right?
Liam didn’t bother stopping the growl that was building up in his throat, throwing his helmet on and running to his position. Brett was a dick, but that didn’t mean Liam wanted him dead. He still loved him, no matter what’s happened.
The game started out fine, other than Liam being targeted by the opposing team. He could handle being pushed around by them. He understood why they were so upset with him. They just didn’t understand Liam’s disorder.
Liam tried staying near Brett without making it obvious, but he didn’t think it was working too well. Brett caught on too quick, and probably thought Liam was trying to mess up his game or something. So Liam was pretty caught off guard when he got the ball, and was instantly hit by Brett. Someone else got in the way, too, but Liam was too busy being thrown in the air to pay attention.
The three boys hit the ground hard. Liam’s wrist snapping under Brett’s weight, causing him to yell out in pain. The younger boy pushed the older off of him, ignoring the similarly pained yell coming from Brett. Liam stood up, running over to Scott.
”How hard did you hit him?” Scott questioned, concern clear on his face. Liam growled, taking his glove off to grab his broken wrist.
“I didn’t. He hit me,” he lifted his wrist up to show Scott. Scott visibly cringed, reaching forward to grab Liam’s forearm. Oh, god. This was going to be terrible.
“Close your eyes.” Liam didn’t, but that didn’t stop the gasp he let out, flinching away. That asshole could have really gotten someone hurt. The short boy shook his head, looking back to Brett. He seemed more hurt than Liam had been, his cries piercing Liam’s ears. Why wasn’t he healing?
“Liam, are you cut? Did Garrett cut you?!” Scott panicked, starting to check Liam for any other wounds. No, Garrett didn’t cut him. He wasn’t even there… Or was he the third person?
“What? No, I’m fine, Scott.” Liam told his alpha, stepping back. Liam didn’t even know if it was Garrett who jumped into the pile up, but if he did, and he didn’t cut Liam; it could only mean one thing.
Brett.
Brett’s the one Garrett was after, Liam felt it at the start of the game. No one else knew that Brett was a werewolf except for Liam. Liam’s face changed to a look of realization, and he took off without a word. He ran off of the field, ignoring Scott’s calls behind him. Brett was in trouble. He was going to die if no one helped him.
Liam ran into the school as fast as his legs would allow. He wouldn’t let anything happen to Brett. He wouldn’t lose him for good. When he finally made it to the locker room entrance, he heard Brett’s voice. He sounded so afraid, and that’s when Liam ran inside, the door slamming behind him. He saw his ex-boyfriend crawling on the ground, trying to escape the killer behind him.
Liam let out a loud growl, shifting into his wolf. No way in hell was that crazy bitch going anywhere near Brett without going through Liam first. He lunged forward, knocking the assassin (who appeared to be Violet) down to the floor. She fought, trying to throw Liam off of her, but the angry beta wasn’t moving. Liam wrapped his hand around her neck, slamming her head on the ground harshly. Just enough force to knock her out.
Brett was still laying on the floor, the smell of blood and fear all over him. Liam wasted no time getting off of Violet and running over to Brett. He leaned down on his knees, resting Brett’s head in his lap.
“Liam, what are you doing here?” Brett rasped, coughing up this black liquid. Liam’s eyes watered, and he couldn’t help but lean down to kiss Brett’s hair softly. He almost lost him, and he was still poisoned.
“I knew something was wrong. You should have healed out there. We have to get you some help, you’re sick.” Liam felt tears running down his cheeks as he attempted lift Brett to his feet. After struggling mildly, they were standing, Brett’s arm over Liam’s shoulders. Liam walked them back towards the field to get Scott.
“Thank you, Liam. You saved my life… But why did you do it?” Brett sounded so broken and weak, it hurt Liam’s heart deeply. He just shook his head, pushing through the doors that lead to the field.
“I would never let you die, Brett. No matter what’s happened between us. I’ve already lost you once, and I wasn’t about to lose you for good.” Brett was silent after that, just his struggled breaths filling Liam’s ears as they finally reach the field. “Scott!” Liam shouted, pleading for some help.
“Liam, what the hell is going on?” Stiles asked frantically, getting up from his place on the bench. Scott followed shortly after, a questioning yet concerned look in his eyes.
“Garrett wasn’t after me. He was after Brett. Violet’s back in the locker room. I had to knock her out before she cut his fucking head off. Please, Scott; we have to get him out of here and get help.” Liam rushed out, starting to panic as Brett fell more limp in his arms. Scott wasted no more time, going to Brett’s other side to help lift him up.
“Stiles, go tell your dad we know who the assasins are.” Scott said, and Stiles nodded, throwing Scott his keys before running off to find his dad. Liam and Scott dragged Brett to the parking lot and laid him down in the back of Stiles’ jeep. Once they were all in, Scott sped off.
“Where are we gonna take him?” Liam asked as he leaned towards the back of the jeep to card his hand through Brett’s hair, gently. Brett’s eyes were closed, his breathing ragged.
“To the animal clinic. Brett was poisoned by a very rare wolfsbane. Deaton will know what to do,” Scott looked over to his beta, noticing how Liam was petting Brett’s hair. “He’s gonna be okay, Liam. Thanks to you.” Liam looked at Scott for a second, nodding. He’d hoped Scott was right.
The drive felt too long, if Liam was being honest. They pulled into the Animal Clinic, and Liam jumped out before the jeep could even stop completely, scooting his seat forward so he could get to Brett easier. He grabbed him under his shoulders, lifting him up so he was sitting rather than laying down.
“Come on, Brett. Can you stand? Or at least help me get you out of the car?” Liam pleaded, and Brett nodded lazily, trying his best to get drag himself out of the old jeep. As soon as his legs hit the ground, though, he collapsed. Liam grabbed him before he could hit the ground, lifting his arm back over his shoulders. Scott came around to help, finally, and they entered the clinic.
“Scott? What’s this?” Deaton spoke upon seeing them barge through the doors. They didn’t speak; instead they dragged Brett into the actual surgical room, laying him down on the table. Liam stood behind his head, hands resting on Brett’s shoulders.
“He was poisoned with yellow wolfsbane. The assassins went after him at the game, but Liam stopped them from killing him. What can we do?” Scott explained, looking over to Liam. Deaton sighed, going to grab what looked to be a scalpel. Liam gasped slightly, squeezing Brett’s shoulders.
“I need to make an incision in his chest. I need you to take his shirt off and hold him still. Can the two of you manage that?” Liam glanced at Scott before looking down into Brett’s eyes. He looked so scared, and Liam was so worried for him. Nonetheless, he sent Deaton a nod, moving to help Brett remove his jersy and pads. Once it was all settled, Liam’s hand went to caress Brett’s cheek.
“You heard him, right? You’ve gotta lie still, Brett. I’m right here, and you’re going to be okay as long as you stay still.” Liam tried reassuring the older wolf, and he saw a single tear roll down Brett’s cheek, melting under his own hand. Liam sighed, moving his hands back to Brett’s shoulder, bracing himself for what was about to happen. Brett was going to be fine. Liam just had to hold him still.
Brett reached a hand backwards toward Liam’s own, and he wrapped is fingers around Liam’s small wrist. He looked in Liam’s blue eyes, before shutting his own eyes, preparing for the pain. Liam pressed down on Brett’s shoulders, watching as Deaton moved the scalpel to the middle of Brett’s chest. Right as he was about to make the cut, Brett started to shake violently.
Liam’s eyes widened when he saw this yellow foam coming from Brett’s mouth. He struggled to hold him still, and when Brett dug his claws into Liam’s wrist, that’s when he let him go. Brett jumped off the table, completely wolfed out. Liam ran to him, trying to get him to calm down.
“Brett! You need to calm down, please!” Brett paused momentarily, looking at Liam with a scared look in his eyes. Out of nowhere, Brett started to choke and he fell into Liam’s arms. Liam was freaking the fuck out, but still caught Brett anyway. He tried hitting him on the back, but he just kept choking. “What do I do?! He’s dying!” Liam cried, Brett growing weaker in his arms.
“Lay him back down on the floor, Liam, now!” Deaton shouted, and Liam did just that, moving down with Brett, resting him on the floor gently. He seemed to have passed out, but Liam wasn’t sure he was breathing. He lowered his head to place his forehead against Brett’s; tears streaming down his face as he cried.
Deaton didn’t hesitate this time, cutting a line down the middle of the werewolf’s chest. Brett woke with a large gasp, yellow wolfsbane seeping out of his chest in a cloud. Liam sighed in relief, smiling down to his ex-boyfriend. He kissed his forehead, holding Brett’s head in his lap.
“Oh, thank god. You’re okay, I’m here, baby.” Liam spoke against his hair, never letting go. Brett smiled weakly up at Liam, reaching to find his hand. Liam noticed this and helped him, grabbing hold of Brett’s hand in his, squeezing tightly. In this moment, Liam had nearly forgotten every bad thing that’d happened. All he cared about was that Brett was okay. He was alive.
“Thank you, Liam. Thank you so much,” with that, Brett gave Liam’s hand one more tight squeeze, drifting off to sleep in his lap.
