The Warden's Call

Summary:

In the midst of the Blight, Faeyln and his brother Silvyr are thrown into an adventure that will change everything. When Silvyr is forced to answer the call of the Grey Wardens, Faeyln refuses to be left behind, determined to stay at his brother’s side no matter the cost. Together, they face darkspawn, impossible choices, and the weight of roles they never asked for.

Along the way, they find unlikely allies, survive unexpected dangers, and come to understand just how deep the bonds between them run, bound by blood, love, and sheer stubborn refusal to let go. This is my attempt at a Dragon Age Origins retelling.

Or: what if everything was the same but like different and more OC characters and like way more gay and like actually more plot but like no extra plot? Yeah… that’s this.

Literally no one asked for this but my brain, and I needed it to exist for my own selfish needs. Read at your own risk 😘

Chapter 1: Prologue: Small Beginnings

Chapter Text

The air was thick with the earthy scent of damp leaves and the faint sweetness of blooming flora as three rumbustious elven children darted through the dense foliage. Their laughter, unrestrained and melodic, wove between the towering trees, a playful symphony against the muted rustle of the forest. The Clan had been on the move for two moon cycles, their footsteps weaving ancient paths, and now they were a day away from their intended camp—a temporary respite in their endless wanderings.

Poorly concealed giggles echoed through the vibrant red and emerald canvas of the Aravels, the intricately crafted wagons that sheltered the travelers. A ruffled Ashalla emerged from behind one of the Aravels, her sharp eyes scanning the chaos before her. She sighed and quickened her pace, her voice rising in a mix of exasperation and affection.

"Silvyr! Enough of this nonsense! Grab your da’muindor and behave!" she called, her tone commanding yet warm. "And you too, Tamlen, enim! Before I tell your Mambe!" Her head shook slightly as she mumbled fondly under her breath.

Silvyr, caught mid-sprint, veered sharply to avoid colliding with Tamlen. He shifted his course with the nimble grace of a forest cat, darting toward his younger brother. Faelyn, wide-eyed and frozen in surprise, barely had time to react before Silvyr scooped him up effortlessly, hoisting him over one shoulder.

"Silvyr, no!" Faelyn protested, his high-pitched squeals of laughter betraying his lack of true resistance. He kicked his small legs in vain, squirming in an attempt to break free. "Tamlen! Halani! Help!" he cried through bursts of giggles.

Tamlen, running alongside Silvyr with a matching grin, easily kept pace. His blond hair shone like sunlight through the trees as he joined the playful chaos. Falling into step, he grinned mischievously up at Faelyn. "Abelas, lethallin," Tamlen teased, his voice mockingly somber. "I fear your muindor’s wrath far more than your halla tears. Now, em ghilas atish!" His words dissolved into snickers as Faelyn slumped in exaggerated defeat, his dramatic sigh muffled against Silvyr’s soft tunic.

"This betrayal will haunt many generations to come," Faelyn declared with theatrical gravitas, eliciting a chorus of laughter from the other two boys.

"You’ll live, da’len," Silvyr replied, smirking as he jostled Faelyn on his shoulder. His hand darted upward to tickle his younger brother, drawing a fresh burst of squeals and laughter.

"Dar’allas! I’m not a baby!" Faelyn protested, his small voice brimming with mock indignation. With a mischievous sparkle in his eyes, he jabs his small fingers into Silvyr’s back and announced, “Assist hahren,” trying to get a rise out of his older brother.

Silvyr rolled his eyes dramatically, his grin widening. "Ugh, you are so annoying!" he said, laughter bubbling in his voice.

Their merry chaos carried them past the nearest Aravel, their laughter lingering like music in the warm, golden light of the waning afternoon. As they approached Tamlen’s family Aravel, his mother glanced up from her preparations, the aroma of herbs and fresh ingredients wafting from her work. Her gentle smile brightened as she spotted the boys.

“Da’len! Come help your Abba with the halla for the night,” Tamlen’s mother called, her voice warm and melodic. The boys slowed their pace, their playful energy ebbing slightly. Tamlen turned to ruffle Faelyn’s messy white and black hair with a playful grin.

“Kel raisin, lethallin,” he said teasingly before turning his gaze to Silvyr. A slight blush rose to Tamlen’s cheeks as his hand hesitated, then brushed lightly against Silvyr’s free hand—the one not occupied with holding the now calmer Faelyn slung over his shoulder. “Sina’ha gara elgara’mei,” Tamlen added softly. Their fingers briefly touched, a fleeting, gentle connection, before the blond elf turned and ran toward his parents to help with the halla and their Aravel.

Silvyr watched Tamlen for a few moments, his gaze lingering on the boy’s retreating figure as he joined his Abba. Then, with a faint smile tugging at his lips, Silvyr turned back toward their original destination.

“Silvyr?” Faelyn’s small voice broke through his thoughts, accompanied by the light tracing of tiny fingers drawing unknown shapes on his back.

“Hmm?” Silvyr replied, his tone distracted but affectionate.

“Do you think I’ll ever be able to tag you or Tamlen in our game?” Faelyn asked, his voice carrying a hopeful lilt.

Silvyr chuckled, the sound rumbling against Faelyn’s side. “Maybe one day when you’ve grown more than stubs for legs.”

A sharp pinch on his back made Silvyr laugh again, undeterred by his younger brother’s indignation. Finally, they reached the edge of the temporary camp, where Ashalla was already unhitching the halla from their Aravel. The creature stood majestically, its sleek coat catching the last rays of sunlight. Ashalla moved with practiced care, brushing the halla’s neck and back with soft strokes, murmuring quiet words of gratitude for its help during their journey.

As Silvyr and Faelyn approached, Ashalla turned her attention to them, her expression fond but purposeful.

“Silvyr, ma’nia, can you and Faelyn fetch some water from the stream? The halla and we could both use a drink, and I need to finish securing the Aravel for the night.”

“E’e oma,” Silvyr replied obediently. He set Faelyn down gently, then turned to retrieve the large ironbark trough for the halla from the back of the Aravel. Faelyn followed close behind, his small hands ready to assist however he could, his boundless curiosity leading him to peer around the camp as they prepared for the task ahead.

As Silvyr began walking toward the nearby stream, Faelyn hurried after him, carrying a waterskin in each arm. “Yed’il ma!” the younger boy called, his small legs pumping furiously to keep up. Silvyr turned, a teasing smirk on his face, and began walking backward to further fluster his little brother. Faelyn’s determined expression only made Silvyr chuckle as they made their way to the stream.

At the stream, the brothers worked efficiently. Silvyr filled the large ironbark trough they had brought for the Halla, ensuring the majestic creatures would have plenty of water for the night. Meanwhile, Faelyn carefully filled the waterskins, his small hands steady as he concentrated on his task. Together, they carried their loads back to the camp.

After returning with their filled waterskins and the Halla’s refreshed trough, the brothers joined the gathering around the fire shared with another nearby Aravel. The warm glow of the flames painted flickering patterns on the faces of the clan members.

“Kel elgara’vallays, Master Ilen,” the two brothers said in unison as they handed out small but nourishing rations to the elders.

“Ma serannas,” Master Ilen said, nodding in acknowledgment as Silvyr offered him a wooden bowl filled with dried meat and foraged greens.

“Na’aeaneth, hahren,” Silvyr replied politely, bowing with the respect befitting the clan’s craftsmen.

To Silvyr’s right, Faelyn respectfully handed a similar bowl to Master Ilen’s bondmate, who accepted it with a grateful smile. The boys then sat down with their own meals, savoring the well-earned sustenance.

“So, what mischief did the two of you get into today?” Master Ilen asked, his tone carrying an amused knowingness that suggested he was already well aware of their antics.

“Why, aside from what you may think you already know, we’ve been the utmost image of obedient, good children,” Silvyr replied with an unshakable straight face. He glanced over at Faelyn, who was enthusiastically stuffing his mouth. “Right, Faelyn?”

Big, heterochromatic eyes darted upward as Faelyn froze mid-bite, quickly swallowing before nodding vigorously. “Oh, yeah! Of course, hahren! We didn’t cause any azhe, am’varen!” Faelyn’s head bobbed so emphatically that the adults couldn’t help but chuckle.

Master Ilen and his bondmate exchanged amused glances, their smiles warm. “Of course, da’len. I wouldn’t expect anything less from our future keeper and master hunter,” Master Ilen said, his tone light but his side-eye sharp enough to make even a seasoned hunter reconsider their words.

The brothers snickered behind their hands, their attempts to appear innocent betrayed by their barely-contained laughter. The elders, however, looked on with nothing but fondness for the boys.

“Why don’t you two finish up your food, and Faelyn, you can help me clean up before your bow-stringing practice with Master Junar,” Ashalla said.

Faelyn nodded eagerly, shoving the last of his meal into his mouth before standing up to gather the elders’ empty bowls.

“And don’t forget, Silvyr,” Master Ilen added with a grin, “you have your studies with Marethari tonight. It would be wise not to be late this time.”

Silvyr groaned good-naturedly but nodded in acknowledgment.

With that, Master Ilen stood, wishing Ashalla a good night. He took his bondmate’s hand, and together, they walked back toward their Aravel, leaving the fire’s warmth to the younger generation.

“You heard Master Ilen. Hurry up now, ma’elfaraflos,” Ashalle called as she began tidying up around the fire, carefully wrapping the uneaten food in beeswax paper to store in their sacks for the next meal.

“Oma! After my lesson with Master Junar, can I listen to the Keeper’s lesson?” Faelyn asked, balancing the rewrapped provisions in his small arms.

Ashalle smiled warmly at the eager boy. “I’m sure Keeper Marethari wouldn’t mind, so long as you don’t interrupt.”

Faelyn’s face lit up. “Did you hear that, Silvyr? I can come listen after I help Master Junar restring our clan’s bows!” he exclaimed, passing his finished bowl to Ashalle.

“Only you would be that excited for a lecture from the Keeper, Wishelma,” Silvyr teased, a broad grin spreading across his face. Faelyn’s grin faltered slightly, but before he could respond, his older brother reached over to ruffle his two-toned hair, tugging playfully at a strand of white amidst the raven-black. “I’ll see you there, da’muindor,” Silvyr added with a wink.

As Silvyr turned to leave, Ashalle called after him, “Straight there! No detours, or you’ll be late again!” She emphasized her point with a slight furrow of her delicate brows.

Silvyr threw a casual wave over his shoulder, the gesture answering for him. “He isn’t even in his adolescent years, and I’m already getting the sass,” Ashalle muttered under her breath, shaking her head.

After finishing his tasks with a cheerful hum, Faelyn dashed into the Aravel to grab his bow, a treasure left to him by his late mother. As he emerged, another boy hurried toward him.

“Garas lethallin! We’re supposed to meet Master Junar at the supply Aravel,” Fenarel called, his dark hair tousled from the day’s activities.

“Hi, Fenarel!” Faelyn beamed, shifting the provisions in his arms. “Is Tamlen already there?”

“Nah,” Fenarel replied with a quick shrug. “He’s helping Junar’s abba with sword sharpening tonight. I heard we’re going to start learning how to make and disarm traps once we reach the Arbor Wilds!”

Fenarel’s excitement was infectious, but his enthusiasm drew a shush from a passing elder. Faelyn stifled a giggle as Fenarel quickly bowed apologetically, his face turning red.

“Don’t laugh,” Fenarel muttered, giving Faelyn a light shove to hurry him along.

The next day, the clan reached their desired location in the Arbor Wilds and began setting up a more permanent camp. Keeper Marethari, flanked by her first and second, performed a blessing to cleanse the area and thank the Creators for their safe arrival.

Faelyn watched in awe as the clan’s mages worked their magic, the air shimmering with energy. The ceremony concluded, and the older hunters set out to scout the area and prepare for a celebratory hunt. The Arbor Wilds, rich in vegetation and elven history, bordered the once-thriving city of Halamshiral. Faelyn, though young, felt the weight of his ancestors’ footsteps in this sacred place, his fascination unshaken despite the many lands he had traveled with his clan.

“Da’muindor, there you are,” Silvyr said, approaching Faelyn with an exhale of relief. “Oma said she needs our help airing and washing the linens and furs while she secures the Aravel.”

Faelyn glanced up from where he was sitting on the mossy ground, noting his brother’s bored expression. “E’e… hey! Maybe we can go swimming with Tamlen and the others after we’re done helping Oma?”

Silvyr’s smirk softened, and a hint of optimism brightened his violet eyes. “You know what? That sounds like a great idea, Wishelma.”

Faelyn leapt to his feet, his competitive spirit igniting. “Last one to the Aravel is a rotten halla butt!” he shouted, bolting ahead.

With a shake of his head, Silvyr gave chase, a laugh bubbling up as he called after his brother, “What does that even mean?”

Pantingq as they reached the Aravel, Faelyn spun around, triumphant. “What does it matter? I got here first! So now you’re the rotten halla butt!”

Silvyr caught him in a playful headlock, grinning as Faelyn squealed and flailed in protest. “I think you mean I’m THE halla butt! If you’re going to call me names, at least get it right.”

Freed from the headlock, Faelyn huffed, his hair a mess. “Which part, my lord? The ‘THE’ or the ‘rotten’ part?” he quipped, making air quotes with his small fingers.

Silvyr burst into laughter, slinging an arm around his little brother’s shoulders. “Both, you peasant! Now hurry up and help me so we can go swimming.”

After finishing their chores, the two brothers raced off to find their friends, their laughter mingling with the lively sounds of the camp. Along the way, they managed to wrangle Tamlen and Fenarel, the group now heading eagerly toward the softly flowing stream near the clan’s campsite.

Fenarel, always one for theatrics, scooped Faelyn onto his shoulders and took off at a brisk pace. Faelyn’s gleeful laughter rang out as the older elf weaved and darted through the trees, making exaggerated motions that only added to the boy’s delight. Silvyr and Tamlen followed close behind, grinning at the spectacle ahead.

Silvyr’s soft laugh and radiant smile caught Tamlen off guard, a flustered warmth rising to his cheeks as he admired his friend’s smooth, carefree features. Before Tamlen could collect his thoughts, Silvyr turned his gaze on him, his violet eyes gleaming with a playful challenge.

“Race you to the bank,” Silvyr goaded, bumping Tamlen’s shoulder.

Tamlen’s pink-tinged cheeks deepened as he smirked back, shaking off his surprise. “And what do I get when I win, lethallin?” he teased, his voice dipping into a low, confident tone.

Silvyr’s eyes widened in mock disbelief, a hand flying to his chest as if deeply offended. “Cocky, are we? Well then… winner’s choice!” he declared, giving Tamlen a light shove to throw him off balance before taking off in a blur of white hair.

Tamlen laughed, quickly steadying himself. “Cheating already, future Keeper? How unbecoming!” he called after Silvyr, his long legs propelling him forward effortlessly. Within moments, he caught up, passing Silvyr with ease and reaching the stream’s edge first.

Silvyr tackled him a second later, both boys tumbling onto the soft grass near the water’s edge. They lay there laughing, Silvyr breathing harder than Tamlen as he tried to catch his breath. “I wasn’t cheating, dear Tamlen,” Silvyr protested between chuckles. “I was strategically… maneuvering an advantage.”

“Was that what that was?” Tamlen replied, raising a brow as he leaned on his elbow to look down at his friend. “It looked a lot like losing to me.” With a mischievous grin, he reached over to ruffle Silvyr’s white hair.

“Oh, you’re insufferable,” Silvyr grumbled, swatting Tamlen’s hand away as another playful tussle ensued. After a few moments, they both called it quits, collapsing onto the grass with matching grins.

“Fine,” Silvyr huffed in mock annoyance. “You won fair and square. What does our swift warrior want as a prize?”

Tamlen twirled a strand of Silvyr’s white hair between his fingers, steeling himself to ask his next question. His gaze lingered on Silvyr’s playful violet eyes, but before he could find the courage to speak, a sudden splash of cool spring water broke the moment.

Both boys flinched, startled out of their quiet reprieve.

“Come on, you guys! Come play with us!” Faelyn shouted, grinning as he continued to splash them with water.

Tamlen and Silvyr exchanged a look of mutual mischief before leaping to their feet. Peeling off the outer layers of their clothes, they plunged into the water, determined to exact their watery revenge on the younger elf.

Squeals of laughter echoed along the brook as the four friends played. Games of tag, splashing battles, and contests to see who could hold their breath the longest filled the hours until their energy was spent. Pruned and blissfully tired, they finally sprawled out on the grassy bank to dry off under the warm sun.

Silvyr’s pale skin had taken on a light pink hue, prompting Tamlen to guide him under the shade of a nearby tree to protect him from further sunburn. A few feet away, Fenarel and Faelyn lay sprawled out in the sunlight, napping peacefully. Fenarel’s soft snores carried on the breeze, eliciting a quiet chuckle from Tamlen.

Resting on his elbow, Tamlen idly plucked at the grass beneath him while glancing at Silvyr, who lay close by with his eyes closed. “Do you think Fenarel’s snoring could get any louder?” Tamlen quipped.

Silvyr cracked an eye open, smirking. “So that’s what I’ve been hearing all night? And here I thought we were being stalked by a pack of ravenous nugs.”

Tamlen laughed, the sound warm and genuine. Silvyr grinned, opening his eyes fully to meet his friend’s gaze. As the laughter subsided, a calm settled over them, and their eyes lingered on one another. They were so close now that only a hand’s breadth separated them.

Tamlen’s cheeks flushed slightly as he looked down, his fingers idly shredding a small pile of grass.

“Copper for your thoughts?” Silvyr asked softly, his voice teasing yet tender.

“You don’t have any coppers,” Tamlen retorted, grinning as Silvyr gave him a playful shove. Their giggles faded into comfortable silence as Silvyr inched closer, his curiosity growing. “Come on, Tamlen, don’t leave me in suspense.”

Tamlen raised his gaze, meeting Silvyr’s encouraging smile and bright, expectant eyes. He bit his lower lip nervously before drawing a steadying breath. “I know what I want for winning the race.”

Silvyr’s violet eyes lit up with mirth. “Oh? Do you now…” he teased, unaware of the storm of emotions swirling within the taller elf.

“Silvyr…” Tamlen’s voice was soft, uncertain, yet yearning.

Silvyr’s smile widened, his expression inviting as he watched his friend wrestle with the words. Tamlen’s hand, darker against Silvyr’s pearly complexion, rose hesitantly before cupping his cheek. Leaning in, his voice dropped to a whisper. “Can I kiss you?”

A deep blush spread across Silvyr’s face and up the tips of his pointed ears. He glanced down shyly, his heart racing, before meeting Tamlen’s stormy grey-blue eyes. His voice was barely audible, but the sincerity in his answer was unmistakable. “Yes.”

Slowly, Tamlen leaned in, his breath catching as he pressed his lips softly to Silvyr’s cooler ones. His hand found its way into the silky strands of Silvyr’s white hair, holding him gently as though afraid the moment might shatter. The kiss was brief—delicate and uncertain—but it carried an earnest sweetness neither of them would forget.

When they parted, their foreheads rested against each other, their eyes fluttering open to meet. Tamlen’s thumb moved in slow, nervous strokes along Silvyr’s cheek, his expression tentative but full of unspoken feelings.

A flush deepened the pink already dusting Silvyr’s cheeks, spreading further up his pointed ears. He smiled shyly, biting his lower lip as he brushed his nose against Tamlen’s in an innocent, endearing gesture. “You… um… you could kiss me again… if you wanted to,” he murmured, his slim fingers lightly brushing against Tamlen’s warm chest, the touch tentative but sincere.

Tamlen exhaled, his shoulders loosening as his lips curved into a gentle, dimpled smile. “I want to,” he whispered, his voice tender and sure.

This time, he leaned in with a bit more confidence, pressing another soft kiss to Silvyr’s lips. It was no longer fleeting, yet still chaste and full of the quiet, unspoken promise of something new and cherished between them.

The two boys separated, but Silvyr gently slid his hand up to grasp Tamlen’s, their fingers naturally intertwining as if they had always belonged that way. They lay back down side by side, their hands still connected, a quiet warmth passing between them.

“I like you a lot, Tamlen,” Silvyr murmured softly, his voice carrying a hint of vulnerability as he gave the young warrior's larger hand a gentle squeeze.

Tamlen closed his eyes for a moment, letting the quiet joy of Silvyr’s words settle over him. With a matching squeeze, he replied, “I like you a lot too, Silvyr.” His voice was steady, filled with unspoken promise, as the two shared a contented smile.

The day’s playful energy faded into a tranquil stillness as they lay together, silently marveling at the new bond unfolding between them. Before long, the weariness of the day claimed them, and they drifted off into a peaceful slumber.

All four boys rested together in the sun-dappled clearing, their breaths soft and even, the laughter and love they had shared lingering in the air. For this fleeting moment, they existed in a bubble of youthful paradise, blissfully unaware of how swiftly time moves and how precious these moments truly are.
