Chapter 1
What started off as a small, seemingly insignificant moment, would later grow to be something much bigger, opening doors to memories long forgotten.
Dazzle had been watching cartoons and Sun and Lunar were chatting nearby, but then Dazzle said something that caught their attention.
“This is Lucy’s favorite character,” she pointed to the screen, “the blue one,”
Sun and Lunar didn’t think much of it, “that’s nice, sweetie,” Sun called over,”
Neither of them bothered questioning who Lucy was, Sun had figured it was an imaginary friend, he had noticed Dazzle seemed to have a pretty active imagination, or it could be what she named one of her dolls.
And that was the end of that moment.
But then those moments kept coming. One morning Dazzle wandered into the basement and found Lunar happily eating his Nutella.
“Lucy loves Nutella too, she eats it all the time,” she told Lunar, then skipped off.
Something about hearing that name caused the smallest flicker of recognition in the back of Lunar’s mind, like he might’ve known the name from somewhere, but just as soon as Dazzle wandered back upstairs, the feeling was gone
Later in the week, while Sun was making lunch for Dazzle, Lunar came into the kitchen.
“Any idea who this ‘Lucy’ is?” the lavender bot asked.
Sun shook his head, “It’s not anyone at the daycare and I don’t know where she would’ve met another kid,”
“Do you think she made a friend while out with Earth last week?” Lunar wondered out loud.
“I don’t know, I feel like she would’ve mentioned it. Besides, Earth told me they stayed at her and Monty’s house the whole day,” Sun plated Dazzle’s lunch and called for her to come eat, “It’s probably just an imaginary friend, and it doesn’t seem to be causing any issues for her,”
“Yeah, you’re probably right,” but Lunar couldn’t shake that feeling that told them, something wasn’t quite right.
…
As the days past Sun noticed two things, the first was that Dazzle was bringing up Lucy a lot more often. She had gone from never mentioning anyone with that name, to talking about this ‘Lucy’ constantly. And the second thing Sun noticed was that she was hanging around Lunar a lot more often than before.
Sure, she always liked it when Lunar played with her, but they weren’t super close or anything. But now she always seemed interested in what they were doing or if the smaller bot wasn’t home, Dazzle would keep asking Sun when he would get back.
Sun thought it was endearing for the most part, his daughter just wanted to spend time with her uncle and Lunar hadn’t complained about it or shown any sign of being upset by her following them around and asking questions, so he didn’t bother stepping in.
As the days continued to pass, Sun began to notice something peculiar about Dazzle's frequent mentions of Lucy. The things Dazzle said about Lucy often seemed to echo traits and habits that Lunar exhibited. She spoke of Lucy's love for playing games, a pastime that Lunar was known to enjoy.
Dazzle would describe Lucy as small and silly with a major sweet tooth, sounding much like a certain animatronic they both knew. She even mentioned how Lucy liked to hum little tunes while working, a habit that Sun had often observed in Lunar. The similarities were no doubt there, but Sun still couldn’t quiet figure out the connection. Perhaps this explained Dazzle’s sudden interest in Lunar.
Sun decided to keep an eye on this development, curious to see how it would unfold. Meanwhile, Lunar continued to be a patient and attentive figure for Dazzle, never once showing any discontent with her newfound attentiveness.
When Moon had asked about Lucy, Dazzle’s answer had him confused.
“She’s my sissy!” Dazzle told him proudly, “she’s the bestest little sister!”
“Dazzle, you don’t have a sister,” Moon tried to correct her, but she wasn’t having it.
“Yes, I do have a sister,” the young girl insisted.
Moon decided not to push, he could talk to Sun about it later. Maybe Dazzle was remembering something from her past life? But Moon was pretty sure Evelyn didn’t have any siblings, he couldn’t recall Sun ever mentioning any.
…
Time continued to pass and Dazzle’s near obsession with Lucy grew, as well as her bond with Lunar.
While Sun was making a sandwich for Dazzle, his daughter skipped into the kitchen.
“Can you make a sandwich for Lulu too?” she requested.
Assuming she was referring to Lunar, as they all called him that sometimes, he gave her a confused look, “they don’t need or want me making lunch for them,”
Dazzle shook her head, “nuh uh, she’s too little, she needs help,”
Sun ignored the use of ‘she’ in favor of wondering why Dazzle would insist Lunar couldn’t do something on their own. Did she think he was younger than he is? Maybe because of his small size?
He could see why it might be confusing for her, especially since Lunar is the smallest in the family, but he was certain she knew they were an adult.
Regardless, he went ahead and made a sandwich for Lunar too.
“Don’t forget to cut off the crusts, Lucy doesn’t like them,” Dazzle began to instruct him on exactly how to make it, and Sun finally realized who she was talking about. But then again, Lunar also didn’t like the crusts, but that was certainly just a coincidence, right?
The little deer animatronic took the plates as soon as the sandwiches were ready and brought them too the living room. Sun watched, curious to see what she would do with the second sandwich.
…
Lunar was sitting on the couch, Dazzle had insisted they watch cartoons with her, waiting for her to come back with her lunch.
She skipped into the living room and held a plate out to him, “here you go, Lucy, papa made one for you too!”
Lunar froze, eyes wide, and that flicker of recognition he initially felt when Lucy was first mentioned grew exponentially. Lunar was sure that name was important, but why? They didn’t know. Slowly, they reached out and grabbed the offered plate.
“It’s just how you like it, isn’t it Lucy?”
She was right, it was just how they, Lunar, liked it. He nodded, confused and a bit unsettled, and yet there was a feeling of familiarity and comfort mixed in as well.
Sun, who had watched from the kitchen doorway, took notice of this little interaction.
The room was filled with the cheerful sound of cartoons, but the atmosphere between Lunar and Dazzle felt charged with unspoken questions. Sun, still in the doorway, felt a tug of concern for Lunar. He had never seen them look so uncertain.
Dazzle, oblivious to the complexity of Lunar’s emotions, sat down next to him, munching on her own sandwich. "Eat up, Lucy! We have to make sure you're full of energy for our adventure later!" she chimed, completely engrossed in the TV show.
Lunar's eyes darted between his plate and Dazzle. The name 'Lucy' echoed in his mind, growing louder with each repeat. Was it a remnant of a past he couldn't remember? Or was it just a nickname Dazzle had chosen for him? Either way, he found himself comforted by the familiarity of the sandwich and the affectionate tone of Dazzle's voice.
Sun decided to join them, sliding onto the couch beside Lunar. He placed a gentle hand on Lunar's shoulder, hoping to offer some reassurance. "Enjoy your sandwich, Lunar. Dazzle made sure I made it just how you look," Sun said, emphasizing his name to gently pull him out of his thoughts.
Lunar took a deep breath and started eating, feeling the tension slowly dissolve. The sandwich tasted perfect, bringing a sense of home and belonging. As they all sat together, the mystery of 'Lucy' lingered, but in this moment, Lunar felt a strong connection to the name.
…
Eventually, everyone had come to realize that ‘Lucy’ was becoming synonymous with ‘Lunar’ in Dazzle’s vocabulary, and no one could quite figure out what it meant.
Lunar’s feeling of connection to the name continued to grow, and it got to the point where he was so certain that name meant something important to him.
But then it happened. While Sun was getting Dazzle ready for bed, she ran down to the basement and gave Lunar a big hug, “goodnight, sissy, I love you!”
And that small flicker of recognition? It was now a huge flame. Lunar’s arms wrapped around Dazzle and with more certainty than they’d felt all week they whispered back, “I love you too, sissy,”
He didn’t know exactly who Lucy was or why he felt so certain in this moment. It confused and honestly scared him a bit. But something felt right, Dazzle calling them ‘sissy’ and hugging them tightly as she said goodnight, it was warm and familiar in way that Lunar couldn’t describe.
And as the deer animatronic ran upstairs, Lunar decided to go to sleep as well, he could search for answers in the morning.
