Work Text:

Damian is a quiet baby. Wally had told Bruce when he dropped the infant off a month prior, it would be cute, had they not known Damian’s short life had been spent in the League of assassins.

Dick is in the shower, and he was busy folding away at their laundry. With two extra people in the apartment there is a lot more laundry to actually do every week.

“You seem pretty interested in my folding babe?” Damian’s eyes look up at his face, away from where they had been busy watching Wally’s hands, a gummy smile filling his mouth.

sniff

“uH! Oh! Let’s go get you,” I lean forward, closer to the bouncer scooping Damian up. “let’s get you changed for bedtime huh?”

Damian is a smart baby for sure, because his face scrunches up and the whining begins, “Its okay.. Tati is in the shower so you are stuck with me,” I grab my phone off the coffee table, “And I am way quicker than he is! Yes I am~” By the time I’m in the nursery I can hear Dick getting out of the shower.

“Tati might get to join us for the easy part huh?” Damian’s light whining stopping as I fasten the new diaper closed, dropping the nasty one in the pail, after tying it up in a bag. “Do you want a Dog or Cat onesie Dami?” I ask out, leaning both over him slightly.

He doesn’t answer..

Obviously he can't answer!

“The cat one,” Dick answers, from the doorway.

“Oh! And why should I let you pick his jammies?”

Dick laughs, and is lightly tugging on the onesie out of my hands, “Because, Bruce got Cassandra a cat to ease her into,” pausing to zip Damian up, “Civilian life? Jay gave me a run down but, you know him. Anyway I wanna take him over to meet the kitten sometime this weekend.”

“He’s never paying attention when Bruce is talking to him, that should be fine, did you get a bottle?”

He points to the corner of the changing table that holds the diapers and whatnots, atop it stands the 8oz bottle, “I wanna up him to 8 ounces because at lunch he still seemed really hungry after 6, so i made another 4, and he drank just over 2.”

“Mmm, okay. Anything else? He was good while I worked right?” Today was my first day back, Dick moved over last month when Damian first arrived, and I put in all my vacation days I had rolled over from last year, and the prior. Well 3 weeks later, I do need to go back.

“I think he’s trying to lift his head up by himself already?”

Damian’s hungry shriek interrupts him, and he begins grabbing at the bottle Dick is holding, “Mmm.. let’s go lay down till he finishes the bottle? But yeah, he seems so interested in everything.”

We’ve migrated to our bed by this point in the conversation, I let out a yawn and then, “Yeah, I've been noticing that too,” We sit down, and Dick holds Damian and the bottle at an angle, “I wonder how he’s gonna react to a kitten?” I finish with a quiet chuckle.

“We’re gonna have to take a camera and get pictures of it, OH!” He cuts himself off laughing, “Jayson did remember to tell me that she named it Alfred!”

Damian whines through the bottle over the loud noises. “Shh, I’m sorry babe.” I’m quick to quiet and comfort him.

Soon enough the bottle is empty and Dick is pulling a rag over his shoulder, lifting Damian up and burping him they continue with their quiet conversations about work and family matters, Damian falling asleep against Dick, lulled by their voices, and his warmth.

“Here, give me him. I’ll put him in his bassinet,” I say taking Damian out of his arms, pecking him across the corner of his mouth, before I walk across the room with the baby in my arms.

“Mmm..kay, I’m going to make some tea, want anything?” Dick says rising from the edge of the bed and making his way back out into the hallway.

“Mm, just some water please?”

He nods, leaving me alone in the room with the sleeping baby.

Heading over to the dresser, pulling out some sweats and sleep shirt to change into. I make my way into the bathroom, washing my face gives me a minute to myself for a minute or so. Dick joins me a minute later as I’m pulling out my toothbrush, “I think we should find a bigger apartment.”

“What? You don’t have to do that!”

“I know I don’t have to, but Damian already takes up so much space, with the changing table, his bouncer and bassinet. Not to mention everything else,” I pause to spit out the toothpaste in my mouth, “Plus, thats the next step for couples our age who are expecting? Though, I guess we didn’t really get nine months..”

Dick looks at me with hesitation before continuing, “Exactly, we’ve only been together four months Wally.. I won’t be upset if you don’t want to help me raise him.”

“What!? Dick I’ve always wanted to have kids. I figured when I was younger and still going out as Kid Flash I didn’t think I’d get the chance before dying,”

Dick goes to interrupt, but I cut him off before he can start, “I love you, I already love Damian, and I’m not leaving you over anything.”

“You mean it?”

I nod. Grabbing his hand and leading him to the bed, “Every word. Now, where did you set our drinks?”
His eyes widen and he runs into the kitchen, returning a minute later with two mugs, and his ipad, “If we really are moving, I want to find somewhere in Central City, the daycare I’m looking towards is located there.” He says pulling up a website.

“I thought we were going to wait to put him in daycare for a few months?”

“Oh yeah! But the wait list for any daycare is absolutely ridiculous, the lady on the phone from that one in Smallville said that they have parents registering kids before they even get pregnant. Anyway, if we put him on a wait list now, we should be in line until I'm ready,” He finishes, tilting the ipad to me, “See, seven months, we should be in line just long enough.”

“Wow, did you say you’re a Wayne? I feel like that has to cut down that wait extensively.”

“I couldn’t have done that, then some poor overwhelmed parent is going to get waitlisted again

He pauses to lay back against the pillows, and against me, closing his eyes, “This is so much harder than I thought it would be.”

“Yeah, but you’re doing great Dick, really for how sudden this has all been. You’re handling it better than most people who know they have the time to prepare themselves.”

SNOREEE

Oh, “Sleep well.” Kissing his forehead I close my eyes falling asleep to the sounds the both of them unconsciously make.
