Chapter Text
It really was an accident, in all senses of the word. Can’t really blame anyone too much unless you wanted to be pointing fingers at the nature of things itself.
It was a mixture of too-big explosions and un-calculated variables that no human or monster could foresee and… Well. That was that. At least they’d accounted for some of the explosions.
Not enough to save their chief scientific officer from dusting, it seemed.
Now, Sans wasn’t exactly the most hands-on CSO; but he was a CSO. He kinda attended these things only because he was expected to. Otherwise he just let everyone do the work for him.
Which, had probably been their first mistake, in all honesty.
He also hadn’t been wearing glasses. His second mistake, but, it’s not like he expected to die and retain an eye injury. I mean really, who accounts for that?
Either way, one of the explosions got a little too close to him, and the rest is history.
. . .
He remembers the sun disappearing from his vision. First his right eye, then his left, as he felt his body fall away from him. A flash of bright, too-white light, before everything went dark. Maybe some screams from around him, before everything went eerily still.
…
He can’t remember too much.
Just that the sun went out on him.
And then
the dark.
.
.
.
…Come to think of it he can’t even remember what it was they were all testing.
Oh well!
Not like it matters much anymore. He’s dead, so.
He can barely even remember the faces of his coworkers!
Heheh, funny how that works.
He must have spent like, what, a decade with them? What were their names? Huh.
He’s kinda forgotten a lot about his past life. But anyway…
Being in The Void is… Certainly something. It’s not really anything. It’s just kind of a space he exists in now. He wonders how many years it’s been. Whether it’s been decades, or centuries, or millenniums.
From Chara, he learns monsters are now Underground. He doesn’t usually get out that much. Doesn’t really care enough to. But, the kid’s chatty. They’d suddenly popped up one… Time. Day? He’s not sure, but they’re pretty much the only company he has.
Sometimes they talk to him. He doesn’t really talk back.
And that’s how it is.
Chara sometimes asks him to come with them. They still keep an eye on their old family. Suggests he could, too. Sans kind of thinks it’s a waste of time. (Even if he has nothing but time. He’s sure the kid knows it’s an excuse on his part.)
(But, telling the truth would require telling them that he can’t even remember his own family enough to keep an eye on them. And, he thinks that might break their heart a little, so he doesn’t say anything.)
…
It never stops being dark here. Even when Chara appears, and their Soul of Determination is vibrant, it does little to light up the vast emptiness.
At some point, they ask him to join them again. One of their trips into the physical world. The first time he’d see his kind in…
. . . Well.
. . .
He says yes. He’s not sure why. Maybe it’s the glow in their eyes. The Hope in their voice. The tugging of their arm on his.
Maybe, it’s the fact he’s reminded they’re a kid. They’re no older than thirteen. They’re prickly and sarcastic and a nuisance sometimes, but a kid.
So he says yes.
And with a simple tug from Chara's being, the two of them are pulled into color.
