Dreaming of You

Summary:

“Chenle... I know you’re going. And I know I can't stop you. But if you see Jeno… tell him I still keep the stars we counted in my pocket. And that I loved him. Still do. Always will.”

The room fell silent again. Except for Jaemin and Mark, who were weeping softly.

Jeno looked at Haechan.

Haechan looked at Jeno.

Their eyes met. For just one moment, the world paused. The storm outside stilled.

And then it happened

Renjun’s painting cracked.

Chapter Text

The rain pelted against the glass of the room where NCT Dream practice, you know the one. Jeno stared out the window, his jaw clenched, eyes dark and stormy. Just like his soul.

He didn’t even flinch when Haechan walked in, the scent of betrayal trailing in with him.

"You're here," Haechan said, his voice breaking just a little, words getting caught in his throat. But of course, Jeno noticed. He notices everything. Everything except how to heal a heart that was no longer whole.

Jeno turned slowly. Too slowly. It was dramatic. He wanted it to be. He needed it to be.

"I said I wouldn’t come back," he murmured, voice low, broken, tragic. "But I did. Because I’m stupid. Because I still care."

Haechan swallowed. Hard. Like, visibly. It was very emotional. Somewhere in the background, a melancholic piano began to play, probably Renjun's doing, since he was sitting in the corner painting watercolours of sadness and unspoken emotions.

"You don’t get it, do you?" Haechan’s voice cracked again. "I never wanted to hurt you. I just… I got lost in the fame. In the confetti showers and body glitter, Jeno."

"Don’t." Jeno's voice was ice cold. "Don’t bring up confetti. Not after what happened on the Jamsil stage."

Haechan gasped. Not the Jamsil stage. Not that memory. The screams still haunted him.

Jaemin suddenly burst through the door, mascara streaked down his cheeks, holding a letter. A letter soaked in both rain and tears.

“It’s over, the dream is dead” he whispered, handing it to Jeno. “Chenle… he’s leaving for good. He says he can’t stand the sexual tension anymore.”

The room fell silent, except for the sound of Mark sadly weeping in the other corner.

Jisung tripped into the room right after, holding a bouquet of wilted roses and a broken promise.

No one spoke.

Because sometimes silence says more than words ever could.

Notes:

hi besties it's me, coming to you live from my room lit only by the flickering light of my NCT Dream fairy lights and the glowing screen of my shattered heart. this chapter… oh god this chapter nearly destroyed me emotionally, physically, and spiritually. I cried so hard my mom asked if I was okay and I said “no, JENO IS SUFFERING” and she just walked away. she doesn't get it. SHE NEVER GOT IT.
