Chapter 1: Squishy Human

Chapter Text

The Moon was like a big, bright, judging motherfucker.

It silently watched you from above, through anything and everything, it was there, high up in the sky, shining like a jewel, burrowing the light of a star to show up and remember everyone of its constant glow and majesty.

Through good and bad.

Knowing it was there now too reassured you. Moving to another country was tiring, hell, even though your brain was swirling with thoughts, every one of them carried an exhausted plea to flop down onto whatever surface and sleep, you’d even sleep down there amongst the bushes if you were desperate enough, and maybe, you were getting there.

Certainly it’d be a quick descent towards reducing yourself as the new weirdo of the town if you seriously did that, but the guy supposed to welcome you into your new shared house was getting longer than ever to fucking show up. Jesus, what was the hold up? It was 11 pm and you’ve been travelling around since early this morning, having to wake up at the asscrack of dawn to even wish to catch the first of many buses you’d need to take before even arriving here. You didn’t even wanna remember the karens and pricks you had the displeasure to encounter today. They should thank you you weren’t shouting and acting like a madman, exhaustion does that to a person at some damn point.

Thankfully, someone heard your prayers because before you could actually turn around and use your luggage as a fucking pillow the door to the mansion cracked open and a short skeleton with eyebags nearly worst than yours and a blue, puffy hoodie greeted you with a rather tired grin, “Hiya, you’re (y/n), right?”

“Yup, i’m your guy,” You’d be nervous if this was an entirely different situation and your energies were still safely thriving inside your body. Now tiredness swashed together with your blood, replacing any eagerness and making it natural to be that easygoing, so you just showed him a similar tired smile and exchanged a shake of hands.

You’ve already spoke with this monster a few days prior. Sans was the head of the house and he was searching for someone willing to babysit his two little brothers, you just happened to be planning to move to Ebott city and were in need of a job and of course you couldn’t care less of a fuck if they were monsters or not.

Taking the job also meant you’d come living with him and his cousins as this was a shared house and they had a vacant room for a while. You honestly didn’t mind, two birds with one stone.

Monster children also were goddamn adorable and amazing, which was definitely the cherry on top.

“Your room is on the third floor, last door to the right,” Sans told you, helping you with bringing your luggage inside and giving you a spare key to the house and also the key to your door, you nodded along to his words, “There’s a bathroom in each floor, ‘s the only white door you’ll find, can’t miss it.”

“Gotcha. Everyone else is asleep, i assume?” You asked, not even noticing your volume to be even lower than the one Sans was using.

He smirked and buried his hands into the pockets of his hoodie, physically sinking into the softness and comfort it seemed to provide, “Everyone’s in their room, can’t be sure if they’re asleep or not, tho. You’ll meet my baby brothers tomorrow morning“

“Can’t wait,” You said, but quickly noticed the lack of enthusiasm in your voice and apologised, “Sorry if i sound like a zombie, i really appreciate your hospitality.”

Sans merely chuckled and dismissed your worries with a flick of his wrist, “No big deal bud, go get your rest, bring an agenda tomorrow ‘cause you’ll have to remember a lot of names,”

The corners of your mouth inched upwards into a genuine, amused grin. “Consider it done boss,”

“i’ll be in my room if you need anything, first door on the second floor,”

You nodded and gave him a thumbs up, thanking him one last time before taking your luggage and biding him goodnight as you faced today’s last boss: the stairs.

Not taking into account the fact that you nearly fainted twice, you safely made it to the third floor. As Sans told you, the bathroom was stupidly easy to spot, being the only room with a white door while all the others had mahogany doors, which morphed into a fucking atrocity at your poor exhausted eyes. Choosing to ignore this until you had your rest you unlocked and retreated into your new room as quietly as possible. Risking to wake someone up wasn’t in your plans and you hated when someone disturbed your sleep so you did your best to not disturb theirs and be like a silent, minuscule fly returning home.

Your room was cute, spacious enough, not that you inspected it the instant you stepped inside, fuck no. The only thing on your mind was sleeping so after finding the will to clean your hands with a wet wipe and change into something comfier you plopped down on your bed and went out like a light the moment your head hit the pillow, Morpheus gently claiming you to his blissful realm.

The next morning you woke up to multiple rings assaulting your phone, signalling you a waterfall of texts and the possibility of A.someone dying or B.you slept for five days straight and missed your meeting with the baby skels.

With a groan more pained than a dog in the middle of the road who’s about to die you sat up on your bed, whining at the sudden loss with your source of comfy warmth. After groggily rubbing the sleep out of your eyes with your hands you got out of bed and searched for your phone, luckily enough the rings made it easier to find.

As you picked it up you had just the time to check that the texts were mostly from your mom and one from Sans, telling you that him and almost everyone else was down in the living room, before it fucking died in your very hands.

“Ah great,” you muttered sardonically, moving to plug in your phone just as you got ready to meet everyone. Now that your body wasn’t powered just by sheer exhaustion your hands started trembling slightly with anxiety gripping at your throat.

It was the start of a new chapter in your life, yet it was the first time since high school you lived with just men. You knew very well monsters were a lot more open minded that humans, still, you couldn’t help but fear in case it slipped out that you didn’t exactly fancy tits and pussy like a lot of your peers would expect of you. A guy who likes boys? Pshhhh, the devil definitely infected you!!!!

With a sigh and a couple of breaths taken to calm you down you went to the bathroom to brush your teeth and came back inside your room once you were finished to put on something comfy yet casual, you didn’t wanna give them the impression like you were exaggerating your welcome, despite this being your house as well from now on.

Once that was done and your phone battery was a sad 7% you decided to finally go downstairs. Already from the second floor the buzz of idle chatter reached your ears, both calming down your nerves and worsening their state tenfold. When you reached the living room the chatter ceased, causing a pregnant silence to fill the space as a pack of skeletons was there to greet you. Full of anxiety, you waved at the lot of them and sheepishly introduced yourself while searching for Sans among them with desperation.

A few skellies definitely looked more eager than others.

…For now you’ll ignore the few ones that either ignored you or regarded you with suspicion.

Finally, you spotted him as he walked up to you and collected the attention of his cousins all on himself to clarify that you were in fact the human that will be living with them and that you’ll babysit the two young ones.

Speaking of them, before you could ask where they were, two thundering blurs tackled you into the ground with mirth shining in their laughter, drawing a rough ‘oof-‘ sound to escape your throat as you found yourself meeting the ground, butt sore and two rather tiny skeletons laughing on top of your chest and beaming at you.

Woah- you’re so squishy!” Exclaimed one, “You’re our new friend?????” loudly asked asked the other.

“Kids, dear god, go easy on him,” Sans scolded.

The first genuine laughter after a few weeks made it out your throat as you looked at the two skels, a smile stretching your lips and nerves fading away into the back of your head, “Jesus, you two are full of energies, not even a ‘hi, hello my name is…’?” You teased, making the both of them pout and flush with embarrassment.

A skeleton you didn’t know chuckled down at you but quickly offered you a hand to get back up on your feet, his outfit matched Sans’, who was watching you amusingly, but instead of having a blue hoodie, he wore an orange one, “The name’s Stretch, nice meetin’ ya,”

“My pleasure,” You said, giving him your name.

“I think it’s time these two introduce themselves as well, dontcha think?” Sans said, gently pushing the suddenly shy little skeletons towards you.

You kneeled down and smiled encouragingly at both. “I’m Rale,” muttered the spitting image of Sans, “I’m Lato! Hiii!”

“Hello you two, i hope we can be good friends,” They both melted at your words, losing their shyness and beaming once again.

“Brought the agenda?” Sans joked, drawing your attention to him, “Wasn’t joking when i said there’d be a lotta names to remember,” He winked at you.

A quiet chuckle made it past your lips, “i’m always up for a memory game,”

The first skeleton to introduce himself after Stretch and the two cute little ones was Sans’ younger brother, Papyrus. You immediately noticed that while Rale was The spitting image of Sans, Lato resembled Papyrus so much in an almost creepy way.

Their parents really said Copy and Paste , huh?

Papyrus eagerly shook your hand and introduced himself with a proud look, sharing with you his wish to be your friend, which made you internally go ‘AWWW’.

Then, it was Stretch’s brother’s turn, Blue, who matched Papyrus in terms of energy and friendliness. After him, Red and Edge were next, the former giving you a lazy wave from his spot on the couch, grinning at you and making his golden tooth quite visible from your spot. The collar he wore and his black and red attire caught your attention most of all. Fifteen years old you would have fell head over heels for him, it screamed My Chemical Romance from a mile away. Contrary to Red’s wave and smile, his brother Edge stared at you silently for a while with a sharp look, arms crossed in front of his chest, when he apparently deemed you to not be a threat worth fretting over he gave you a stiff nod and kept staring, you could catch a hint of disgust on his skull.

Ahah, okay…

Black and Rus came right after, Black sharing most of Edge’s stiff posture in his mostly black and purple attire, Rus on the other hand came right up to you to shake your hand and greet you properly. Like Red, he too had a glint of gold, but instead of just one tooth, both the sharper ones at the side of his mouth were shining gold, catching your attention for a few seconds.

Finally, Moon and Jupiter were last. Jupiter being the tallest skeleton in the room, with, mostly, jagged teeth and a patch over his left eye. Despite his slightly creepy aura he was so friendly and sweet that he completely shattered your initial sense of fear. Moon, his brother, wasn’t beating the creepy allegations tho, neither was he nearly as friendly as Jupiter, he didn’t openly show to dislike you like Edge and Black’s behaviour seemed to suggest, but after he regarded you from head to toe he gave you a gruff and forced “Hello,” and turned around.

The gods have to forgive you cause you tried so, so hard not to stare at the gaping hole at the side of his skull, and luckily, soon after noticing his massive, single red eyelight you found it a lot more enticing, it was like you were entranced with it.

After the introductions were out of the way, at the few looks you gave around the room to try and mentally connect every name to the respective skeleton Sans chuckled beside you, softly bumping your arm with his elbow, “Is your brain winning the memory game?”

“It’s trying to, give it a couple of days and watch it win,” You replied, smiling.

“‘Course pal.”

Breakfast was pretty interesting so far, while not all skellies were making the effort to chat with you the little ones were all over you, showing wonder and adorable curiosity at your whole “human nature” thingy. Your eyes were filled with amusement as you watched them touch and trace their phalanges over your skin, inspecting your arm and feeling all the possible dips in your meat and the bones in your hand.

It was so fucking adorable…!

Papyrus settled down on the table all the plates with the help of Edge and Black, distributing to everyone an abundant breakfast with eggs, bacon, toast and some fruit to the side. The sight and more so, the smell, made your stomach grumble in glee, savouring the moment it could be satisfied, causing you to let out a nervous chuckle and an embarrassed apology.

The eager skeleton was quick to reassure you, “NO NEED TO APOLOGIZE, HUMAN! EAT TO YOUR HEART’S CONTENT!!!” With a relieved smiled and a nod of thanks to Papyrus you picked up your fork with your free hand, since your other one was still being a subject of inspection and began eating with a satisfied smile. The kids being so curious over you wasn’t uncomfortable to you, on the other hand, you didn’t mind it one bit, it was such a cute sight. From some of the looks you noticed Stretch, Rus, Sans and Blue give the two children you knew you weren’t the only one thinking they were adorable.

In the middle of the chatter you weren’t participating to, Sans softly bumped your side, “They still don’t understand the whole concept of ‘personal space’ yet, give ‘em a good scolding if they overstep any boundaries,”

You chuckled, “I will, but now it’s cool, they’re cute.”

You brought the toast to your mouth and took a big bite out of it, you turned your head to the side, feeling a soft grazing of tips along your arm, “Human flesh is weird,” Rale whispered, a pensive look on, “It’s so soft, doesn’t it hurt?”

“Not at all, if you grip and pinch it it does start hurting a bit tho, especially where the skin is more flaccid, it’s more sensitive,” You explained, rolling your sleeve and showing your underarm, just above your armpit, “like here, see?” You said, moving your arm, flesh wiggling softly along with the motion, drawing a fascinated noise to come out the two’s mouth.

Save cute interactions like this one, breakfast was pretty uneventful so after offering to wash the dishes as a thanks for their hospitality and spending some quite awkward minutes with Black as he helped dry everything up with a towel, you went back to your room, wanting to settle down properly.

Back at the third floor you thought you could relax a bit from the socialisation, your social battery was beginning to run out, not because you didn’t enjoy it, most of the boys were so cute and eager to make you feel at home, yet, getting to know so many personalities at once was a bit draining. It was the right time for some well deserved me-time, y’know? But then, you began hearing faint shouting coming from one of the first doors on the same corridor as yours.

Your curiosity spiked, sure, but you weren’t nosy, you wouldn’t listen in to the obvious argument that was progressively getting louder and louder. Nope.

Fate decided that giving you mercy wasn’t an option today.

You turned your head one second, hearing some pretty awful words getting thrown here and there. A word slammed open, a fuming Red storming out while Edge tried to threaten him into getting back inside.

“RED! GET HERE, YOU FUCKING MONGREL!”

“Nah, ya fuckin’ heard me. Don’t tryna talk to me ‘bout this again, paps.” Red hissed, glaring at his taller brother menacingly. Somewhere deep down your chest ached and throbbed, recognizing the scene as something that would often happen between you and your brother as well.

Noticing you lingering in the corridor Red glared venomously at you too, and you flinched, mouthing a tiny ‘sorry’ before hurrying inside your room. Words and shouts from outside still seeped through the walls despite being muffled.

A sigh escaped you. Siblings fight all the time.

It’s okay. It’s normal. Siblings fight.

You and your sweet, loving older brother used to always fight like that…!

Yet, you and him haven’t talked in nearly 5 years. And the reason why makes your heart shatter every time your mind bounces back to him.
