“Sing us a ballad, Ophelia!” Laertes said with ale in hand.
“Your voice is so beautiful, dearest,” Hamlet agreed, bringing fire to her cheeks.
Well! She couldn’t exactly say no to that. She climbed onto the stage and cleared her throat.
“And will he not come again?
And will he not come again?”
She cut herself off. How strange. Why was she singing such a sad song on such a happy occasion? But her audience was smiling and cheering, so she must be doing something right. So she started up again.
“No, no, he is dead,
Go to thy deathbed...”
