Work Text:
Rowan’s keys jingled in his hands as he fumbled for the proper key to enter their apartment. His slightly more than tipsy state caused him to enter without realizing how loud he was, considering it was well past midnight and his wife would have been well asleep by now.
Though, to his surprise, he found his wife, looking at him over the couch, where she sat legs crossed over each other, beautiful blonde locks in a messy bun, and wearing one of Rowan's shirts.
Trying to internally sober up as fast as possible, Rowan dropped everything and rushed to the couch. “Aelin, why are you still up?” Coming right to her side, Rowan’s hands went to cup her cheek, God’s, even in her clearly exhausted state, she was still the most beautiful person he had ever laid his eyes on, he thought, pure admiration swimming in his eyes

Aelin let out a tired chuckle, falling into Rowan’s arms, “Holy shit, you look like a mess,”
Aelin had heard the door unlock, and paused her true crime show to watch her husband stumble into the apartment, the first few buttons undone on the dress shirt he had worn to work, that did wonders to show off his muscles, and his cropped silver hair a disheveled mess. “What did Fen and Lorcan do to you?”
Rowan replied with a grin, “You don’t want to know, but why are you still up baby? I told you that I was going out tonight, and you were supposed to be sleeping when I got back.”
Aelin wrung her hands together, as she looked up at Rowan to reply sheepishly “I’m sorry, I tried, I really did, but I couldn’t go to sleep without you.”
”Oh Aelin, you could have called me or something so I could leave those drunk bastards to have their own fun, and you wouldn’t have stayed up alone for hours on end.” Rowan said, placing a kiss on her temple, with his hands carefully tracing circles along Aelin’s back,
”But I didn’t want to take you away from having fun, even if Fenrys likes me better anyway.” Aelin said, Rowan snorted in response. His amusement was then prolonged when Aelin swiftly sat up, her face full of seriousness. “Wait, no one hit on you right? Because if they did, I swear to all the gods that I’ll find her and-“
Aelin’s rampant speech was quickly cut by a smothering kiss from Rowan. “Hey! I wasn’t done and I was also being very serious” Aelin huffed in mock anger, toying with the wedding band on Rowan’s finger.
“First of all, you never have and never will take me away from any fun, secondly, I’m well aware of your capabilities if someone were to ever lay their eyes on me, and thankfully no one did, but lastly, it’s really late and we both need to get some sleep.” Rowan responded, as he swiftly picked Aelin up bridal style and brought them to their bedroom, and shriek escaped Aelin’s lips in surprise.
—
Once Rowan had gotten out of his work clothes and made sure Aelin had everything she could ever need to sleep well, he had finally gotten into bed and brought Aelin close to his chest. Placing a final kiss to Aelin’s head before going to sleep, he settled into the perfect cuddle situation that they had worked out over the years.
”Um, Buzzard, go brush your teeth, your breath smells of the things that you, Lorcan, and Fenrys did together.” Aelin whispered, pushing against Rowan’s chest with a singular hand to emphasize her point.
“Yes ma’am.”
