They are in a Training Match between Karasuno and Nekoma. Currently they are in the second set and it's 10 to 12 for Nekoma.
Kageyama sights as he's trying to come up with a strategy "We can't let Nekoma get to 15 points first." he thinks.
Kuro makes a well done jump serve. Noya recieves the ball with his signature move "the rolling thunder". He succedes in recieving the ball but sadly it flies over the net.
Kenma sets the ball to Lev who hits the ball with a loud sound. Right in front of him jumps Hinata up to block him. Instead of blocking Lev, the ball hits Hinatas face.
Hinata was used to getting hit in the face. The training with Kageyama when they had their first quick attack, the times when he wasn't good at recieving and the ball hit the redheads face instead, and the many times he got hit in the face in general when playing volleyball for example. Getting hit in the face wasn't a foreign concept to him.
The only unusual think about it was how Hinata looked utterly terrified and in pain while he held his nose. The smaller one had a pained expression and was shaking slightly. He removed his hand from his nose for a split second to look at his hand. Seeing that his hand was stained red he put his hand on his nose again, as quickly as he removed it.
For any other person this wouldn't have been such a big problem but Shoyo was horrified. From one moment to the other he goes completely pale as he shook even more, now probably because of panic.
Kageyama thought he was just being dramatic and "He was hit in the face a lot of times and walked out fine" but looking at the other one he got a bit concerned.
Daichi was the first one to ask: "Hey Hinata, did you get hurt?" but Shoyo just held his nose and stared at the floor like it was the most beautiful thing in the world.
"My nose is bleeding" he whispered his voice cracked and it was clear that he was freaking out. Noya and Tanaka ran over to him. Noya spoke:"Come on let us see." Tanaka added: "It's probably not that bad."
"Am I dying?" Hinatas voice shook and his breathing sped up. He was on the werge of crying.
The two second years laughed and Noya spoke: "Of course not. You're just gonna have to patch that up and then you'll be okay." Tanaka joined in: "Yeah there's nothing to be worried about. Just let us see your nose."
Normally this would've worked but Hinata said: "I think my nose is broken." A few tears rolled down his cheeks while removing his hand completely
A few looked horrified while a few other people try to reasure him
Tsukishima laughed his ass of while saying: "You look like someone hit you in the face with a frying pan." while Yamaguchi argued: "Come on It's not that bad." After that he whispered to him: "He's gonna have a panic attack or something if you say stuff like that." Tsukishima just rolled his eyes
Lev yelled: "I'm so sorry Hinata I didn't mean to hit you in the face!" Kenma added: "Are you okay Shoyo?" which Kageyama thought was a stupid question because Hinata doesn't fucking look okay now does he?
"I don't think so" Hinata answered, tears streaming down his face. "I think I'm going to die." They stopped laughing immediately. "Hey, It's gonna be alright. I think." Noya tried to comfort him but It sounded like a lie.
His nose doesn't look as bad as Hinata is saying but it definetly looks worse than Kageyamas nose looked in that match against Johzenji.
Yachi gave him a tissue and said "Come on Shoyo lets go to the nurses office so she can look at your nose."
But instead of moving, Hinata just stood there frozen, he was hyperventilating at this point, while covering his face with his hands.
Kageyama wants to say something to him. Even though the two of them fight all the time, he doesn't wanna see Hinata like this. He has to say something to him.
... because deep down he really cared about Shoyo. He cared so, so much. And he knew if the shoe was on the other foot, Shoyo would say something to him.
"Hey Hinata." Kageyama tries to get his attention as he walks closer to him. Shoyo doesn't respond.
Kageyama stood in front of him. "Hinata listen to me. I want to tell you something." he says, trying to make his voice sound softer so he wouldn't freak Hinata out more. Still no response.
"Hinata, you idiot, listen to me." but whatever he says doesn't matter because he won't listen.
"Hinata!" Kageyama almost yells in hopes to try and catch his attention. Defeated, Kageyama tries one last time to get the redheads attention:
"Shoyo, I'm trying to talk to you dammit"
Everyone stared at Kageyama now.
Yachi was shoked. A few people chuckled. The whole Nekoma team stared at Kageyama in awe.
This was the first time Kageyama called Hinata by his first name which shouldn't have been that suprising. "Kenma also calls him Shoyo and no one bats an eye." Kageyama thought. But deep down he knew this was different.
Shoyo removed his hands from his face slowly to look at Kageyamas face. His eyes were blootshot. The shorter one opened and closed his mouth a few times but no words came out.
"Hey listen, you're gonna be fine. Stop crying your eyes out because of a fucking nose bleed." Kageyama spoke, his voice as calm and collected as possible.
Shoyo tried to calm down. Swiping at his eyes with one hand while his other one was still holding his nose. But no matter how often he wiped his tears away, he just couldn't stop crying and his breathing was still just as fast.
Kageyama realised that he needed to do more than that to calm him down so he continued talking. "Do you remember when I was hit in the face in that match against Johzenji?" Shoyo nods and Kageyama continues
"Well my nose looked like shit then but it was okay like 15 minutes later and yes your nose looks worse then mine did in that match but you're not going to die."
Shoyo didn't look convinced. He took a deep breath to try and calm himself down. "How do you know that?" Shoyo asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Kageyama crouched a bit in an attempt to kind of be on the same height as him. After that he puts his hands on Shoyo's shoulders and speaks again "You're just going to have to trust me when I say this. You're going to be fine." He spoke slowly and in a calm tone so that Hinata would finally get the message.
Shoyo was about to respond when Kageyama added: "So here's what you're going to do." He stood up normally again but leaves his hands on Hinata's shoulders for a little longer.
"You're going to take a damn breath, then you're going to wipe those stupid tears off of your face and then go with Yachi to go to the nurse."
He moves a little closer to Shoyo and whispered in his ear: "And when you can play again I'm going to give the first ball to you. You know which attack. How does that sound?" Kageyama removed his hands from the others shoulders and took a step back.
Shoyo took a few deep breaths. His face lit up a bit. He nodded in agreement and added: "Yeah, sounds great." after that Hinata smiled at him. It was a genuine and warm smile that screamed "Thank you" It was the kind of smile that Kageyama wouldn't get out of his head for months.
After that Shoyo wiped his tears out of his face. Before going to the nurse with Yachi, the shorter one looked at Kageyama and quietly spoke: "Thank you Kageyama."
The way he said it left a stunned expression on Kageyamas face which he hid within seconds
"You're welcome, but don't get hit in the face like that again!" he replied, with a small smile
