Vought Declassifed: Vampire Bat Movie Concepts

Summary:

A poster series based off the movies pitched in cryptophasiac's The Boys fusion, featuring Vampire Bat, Gerard's super-powered drag persona.

Notes:

I've had the honour of being part of creek's vampire bat project since the earliest stages, spitballing ideas over discord, sending outfit ideas and cute bat pictures, and obsessing over the moment frank finds out who gerard is. creek was kind enough to let me, heina, and anya into their creative process. the 'yes and--' relationship we had while they were writing this fic was really something special. i really appreciate all the trust in letting us dig through your docs!

I had a lot of fun taking the concepts from the pitches in the fic and trying to flesh them out, imagining what kind of movies they would be, what genre, who would be in them, etc. every poster feels like a little mini-world of potential. I hope you enjoy! warnings for vague spoilers, i just couldn't wait to post

Notes:

i had a lot of fun imagining what these movies would be like, what genre they would be, and who would be in them. 'bitten by the night' gave me the most trouble; for some reason i just wasn't happy with it for a long time. i played around with a bunch of concepts for 'death from above' before the final one you see here hit like a lightning strike and came together in like 2 days. 'corroded' was a whole lot of nothing until i found the images of bert and gerard, and everything after that slotted together really satisfyingly. i had a lot of fun with "corrosion" effects on the title. 'out of darkness' came together really fast with the first concept i tried. i imagine it as a pseudo-artsy teen drama. i'm really proud of the reflections and shadows on the wings. the wings on 'the real vampire bat' were also pretty fun, i got really into the light and perspective.

when i learned that 'the fabulous vampire bat' was supposed to be animated, i was like "yeah of course, that suits gerard so well. what an awesome concept." while at the same time despairing at my ability to pull it off. but i decided to channel henry darger for a moment and give it a try, and i'm glad it did! it very much still looks like it was drawn with a trackpad, but i'm super proud of it. i'd love to use the technique more

The credited names at the bottom of each poster are a mix of made up people and real actors I lifted from the IMDB pages of vaguely similar movies from around the time the fic is set. credits are not exhaustive; reverse image search isn't perfect, unfortunately.
