Chapter Text
A-13's servos pulsed with a rhythmic cadence, he delved into the mine's depths with an unyielding persistence, akin to a sparkbeat that refused to falter. The faint glow of his biolight had begun to wane, a subtle yet insistent reminder of the impending need for replenishment. Yet, he could not permit himself the luxury of pause, not now, when the weight of his circumstances hung precariously in the balance. His derma contorted into a grimace, a mute confirmation of the silent rebellion that churned within him against the fate that had been inexorably imposed upon him.
Being one of the lowest castes in Cybertron left him no choice but to toil in this endless darkness. His knee joints creaked with each movement, a mechanical sigh that mirrored his emotional exhaustion. A-13's thoughts were a maze of frustration and longing, his spark feeling trapped and yearning for something more.
That pervasive sense of desperation could be palpably felt in the gladiatorial Pits of Kaon, a locale notorious for its darkness and depravity. Despite being technically illicit, arena combat persisted as a clandestine indulgence, it is tolerated by the High Council as a necessary outlet for a populace constrained by the rigid caste system. The pits, originally conceived as a diversion for the laborers in Kaon's vast foundries, had evolved into an entrenched institution, operating in the shadows of Cybertron's legal framework.
Primus, how he yearned for the rush of combat, a sensation that stirred a deep ache within him. He would not dare consider himself formidable; no, his actions were merely a desperate attempt to fill the void that gnawed at his spark. The relentless drudgery of his daily toil only served to erode his sparktime, threatening to extinguish the very essence of his being. The gladiatorial arena offered a fleeting respite, a means to rekindle the flame that flickered within him. A few dents in his frame were a small price to pay for the fleeting sense of vitality it brought. For in those moments of raw, unbridled combat, he felt truly alive, his spark burning with a fierce intensity that momentarily eclipsed the desolate reality of his existence.
But for now, he needed to shake off the thoughts that had claimed him. His reverie was interrupted by the stark reality of his new assignment: he had been temporarily reassigned to a mining team that was reportedly understaffed. The vacant position had necessitated his transfer, and he was now expected to fill the gap, his mechanical form a mere cog in the machinery of the mine's operations.
Refusal was not an option, for he knew that any dissent would be met with swift reprisal from those of higher caste, who would not hesitate to burden him with even more arduous tasks. The team to which he had been assigned consisted of fifteen mechs, none of whom he recognized, their unfamiliar forms a testament to the vast and impersonal machinery of the mining operations. Yet, as his optics scanned the group, one figure caught his attention, standing out amidst the sea of unfamiliar faces with a presence that seemed to resonate more deeply than the others.
"Huh," he murmured, shaking off the thoughts that had claimed him. That mech was indeed formidable, his imposing frame evoking the image of a gladiatorial challenger. It would not have been surprising if such were the case, given the mech's intimidating stature, which seemed chiseled for the brutal arena. Yet, as A-13's gaze lingered, he realized he had been staring for too long, for the mech had caught his attention, turning to meet his gaze. The sudden awareness of being observed sent a jolt through A-13, prompting him to offer an awkward smile before hastily looking away, his helmet tilting in a gesture of uneasy deference.
He’s charming alright.
