Chapter Text
When Klaus arrived at the school with Hope, he didn’t expect to see her—Caroline Forbes. The headmistress of his daughter’s future school. The baby vampire he thought he’d lost to time and circumstance. The one who taught him he was capable of love. The one that got away.
But she was no longer that baby vampire. Time had passed. She had grown, matured—still forever seventeen, yet somehow, she wore her age gracefully in the lines of her face, in the way she carried herself.
The late afternoon sun filtered through the trees, casting long shadows across the courtyard. The building stood tall and peaceful, but the air between them crackled with something heavier—something unresolved.
Caroline stood at the entrance of the school, clipboard in hand, unaware that Klaus and Hope were walking toward her. Hope took in the sight of her—blonde hair pinned back neatly, a no-nonsense look in her eyes—until those eyes widened the moment Klaus stepped closer.
“Hello, love,” Klaus said softly, a smile playing at his lips.
Caroline froze, her mouth parting in shock. “Klaus… hi,” she managed, her voice slightly trembling. “I thought—you were dead?”
“A lot of things have happened, love,” he replied with a half-smirk. “But I assure you, I am very much alive.”
“Yeah, I see that,” she chuckled, trying to mask the flutter in her chest. But it was hard. Seeing Klaus again was like being slammed with a thousand unspoken memories. Her heart remembered even if she didn’t want it to.
Then her brow lifted. “Wait—don’t tell me you're the mysterious parent who refused to give any information unless it was in person?”
“That would be me,” Klaus admitted with a nod.
Hope stood quietly beside him, watching the exchange with wide, curious eyes. She’d never seen her father look at anyone like that—so unguarded. So… open.
Caroline finally turned toward her, noticing the girl for the first time. Auburn curls, sharp blue eyes—so much like Klaus, but softer.
“And you must be Hope,” Caroline said warmly, extending a hand.
“Yes, I am. Nice to meet you,” Hope replied politely, shaking her hand.
“I’m so happy to finally meet you,” Caroline said, flashing her Miss Mystic Falls-winning smile. But the smile faded just slightly when she turned back to Klaus.
Hope watched them closely. There was a story there. She could feel it—not just in the silence between their words, but in their eyes. Her father had never looked at Camille like that. And definitely not her mother. Caroline, whoever she was to him, wasn’t just a figure from the past. She was something unfinished.
“Last time I saw you,” Caroline said after a beat, her voice quieter now, “you were walking away from Mystic Falls like you’d never come back.”
Klaus's smile faltered just slightly. “I never forgot you, Caroline. Even if I had to leave.”
Caroline looked down briefly, then squared her shoulders like a switch had flipped. Professional again.
“Well,” she said, breaking the moment, “why don’t we head inside? I’ll give you both a tour of the school and a rundown of everything.”
As they followed her into the school, Klaus glanced over at Hope, whose eyes hadn’t stopped darting between them.
There’s history here, Hope thought. And I’m going to figure out exactly what it is.
Klaus, on the other hand, was thinking about something else entirely. He hadn't brought Hope here just for education. There was a reason he’d chosen this school—her school. And now that Caroline Forbes was back in his life, whether she liked it or not, things were about to change
