Language of love.

Summary:

"Uncle Han, why do you keep saying so many things?" Yongbok asked curiously. "You always say nice things," she said. "Like, a lot."

"Yeah," Chan added. "Dada, you talk too much sometimes."

Jisung clutched his heart like he'd been stabbed. "Too much? This is how some people show love!"

"By talking a lot?" Yongbok blinked.

"Yes! Words are important!" He sat across from them, suddenly serious. "Telling people how proud you feel. Sometimes people don't know how much you love them until you say it out loud."

Or,

Yongbok and Chan are on a mission: to understand what love means by watching how their family shows it. From pancakes and praise to quiet help and sparkly surprises, they discover that love comes in many forms - and sometimes, it's just a really big hug.

Work Text:

The morning sun painted the kitchen in sleepy yellows and warm orange streaks, slipping through the open windows like honey. The smell of toasted bread and sizzling eggs filled the air, mingling with the faint melody of Jisung's humming. He was spinning in socks, flipping pancakes, and holding the spatula like a microphone.

"My wife is the prettiest, she is one of a kind, my boys got ninja skills, and my unborn babies already know I'm iconic," he sang dramatically, twirling as if he were on stage. "Breakfast is a performance, not a meal!"

"Dada, your pancake has a tail," Chan giggled, pointing at the vaguely cat-shaped blob on the pan.

"That's not a tail, that's flair," Jisung replied, shooting him finger guns. "Like me. Uncontrollably stylish. And unique."

From the hallway, Yongbok tiptoed in, holding a coloring book and blinking sleepily. She climbed onto a chair beside Chan, both of them now wide-eyed and mesmerized by the chaos that was Jisung in the morning.

Hyunjin padded into the room, tying her robe, her hair in a sleepy bun, and her eyebrows slightly raised. "Honey, have you been singing to the toaster again?"

"The toaster deserves love, Hyunee," he said with a grin. "Just like you. And your sleepy face. And your barely-awake glare."

Hyunjin rolled her eyes, but her smile betrayed her. "What time did you wake up?"

"Early. Needed to make breakfast for my queen," he said, dropping the spatula and placing a dramatically overcooked pancake on a plate. "It's a slightly burnt offering to your beauty."

Chan and Yongbok snorted. Hyunjin tried to suppress a laugh as she sat at the table. Jisung stood behind her and wrapped his arms around her shoulders, placing a kiss on the crown of her head.

"I love you," he whispered. "Even when your morning sulky face could kill a plant."

"I love you too," she replied dryly, "even when your pancakes look like crime scenes."

"Channie," Yongbok leaned into Chan and whispered, "Is that flirting?"

Chan whispered back, "I think it's married flirting." They both nodded, impressed.

Jisung turned to the kids, grabbing two mini plates and carefully placing little cartoon pancakes on them. "For my baby ninjas," he announced. "Because you two are sunshine. With legs."

"Uncle Han, why do you keep saying so many things?" Yongbok asked curiously.

"Huh?"

"Telling people how proud you are, or how pretty, or how smart and cool and absolutely unreasonably incredible they are - that's how they know you mean it. Sometimes people don't know how much you love them until you say it out loud."

Yongbok blinked, and Chan looked thoughtful. "Like... when you say mumma's sleepy face was pretty?" Chan asked.

"Exactly!" Jisung pointed with his fork. "She already knows I love her, but I say it anyway. Every day. Because she deserves to hear it."

Yongbok tilted her head. "So that's a love language?"

Jisung grinned. "Yup. Words of affirmation. If I didn't say 'I love my wife' thirty times before lunch, I'd probably combust."

The kids laughed again, but there was something else there now - a new layer of awe behind the giggles.

Yongbok gently leaned her cheek on the table. "Bokkie wanna try it," she said softly. "Can Bokkie say something too?"

"Of course."

Yongbok turned to Hyunjin. "Auntie Honey... Bokkie thinks you give the softest hug ever. And your babies are gonna be the luckiest babies."

Hyunjin froze, her eyes welling up instantly. She reached over and scooped Yongbok into her lap. "You have a heart of gold, princess."

Chan raised his hand. "I want to say one."

"Go for it!" Jisung beamed.

"Mumma," he said shyly, "I think your voice is like a bedtime song. It makes my tummy calm." The boy said, and Hyunjin pressed her hand to her heart and smiled so warmly, even the sun outside seemed to soften.

Jisung grinned and leaned back in his chair. "And that, kids, is love language number one."

Later that afternoon, the kids were left at Yongbok's place. The house glowed slow and golden, the kind of light that makes everything feel like a memory. The kids were sprawled on the living room rug with their coloring books and sticker sheets, debating if glitter counted as a real color.

From the open kitchen, the sound of a knife rhythmically tapping a cutting board drifted in.

Chan sniffed the air. "I smell... cheese."

Yongbok perked up. "Cheese sandwich?" asked the little girl as Chan got up and tiptoed over to peek inside the kitchen - and there he was.

Seungmin stood at the counter in a plain gray hoodie, sleeves pushed up, glasses sliding down his nose. He wasn't singing or dancing. He didn't even know anyone was watching. He was just... quietly assembling sandwiches.

One by one, he laid down slices of bread, added cucumber and grated carrot the way Yongbok liked, cut the crust off Chan's triangle pieces, and placed a strawberry heart toothpick in the middle of each plate.

"What's uncle doing?" Chan whispered, motioning to Yongbok. She joined him silently, watching through the doorway.

"Papa's not talking," she whispered.

"Maybe he's mad?"

But then Seungmin did something strange - he carefully tucked a napkin under the side of each plate and added a tiny sticky note beside each one.

Yongbok squinted. The note on hers said: 'Don't forget to chew! You smart little witch.' The one for Chan: 'Wolf boys eat vegetables. You're doing amazing.'

They blinked.

"He wrote us notes?" Chan whispered, stunned.

Yongbok nodded, eyes round. "And papa cut my bread like a bunny."

Just then, Minhee walked into the kitchen holding a small sewing kit. "Min, did you fix the tear in Bokkie's overalls?"

"Already did it this morning," Seungmin said, sliding the last sandwich into place.

"You did?" she blinked. "It was tiny."

"So's my baby witch. But it matters."

Minhee just looked at him for a second, something warm flickering across her face. "You didn't have to, you know."

"I wanted to," Seungmin replied, calm as always. "That's the whole point."

Then he handed her a mug of hot cocoa with two marshmallows - exactly the way she liked it. Minhee blinked again, then smiled.

"You're really something, you know that?" Minhee scoffed, still smiling.

He shrugged. "Just trying to keep my girls happy."

Outside the doorway, Yongbok and Chan exchanged glances. "Papa didn't say he loves mommy," Yongbok whispered.

"But he made her cocoa," Chan whispered back.

"And sewed Bokkie's clothes," she added.

"And wrote wolf boy notes."

They backed away, huddled behind the sofa like tiny love detectives. "I think I get it now," Chan said. "Some people don't say it with their mouth. They say it with their doing."

"Like sandwiches and tiny bunny bread." Yongbok's eyes went wide in realization.

"And sewing buttons."

"And carrying people's heavy things." Yongbok nodded, sage-like. "Love language number two. Doing things."

The day came with a gentle breeze and a soft orange sky, stretching across the backyard where the family gathered for their usual post-dinner sprawl. The grownups were chatting around the patio table, Hyunjin resting her feet on Jisung's lap while Minhee and Seungmin argued over who cheated at cards.

But Yongbok and Chan had their eyes on one person.

Changbin.

Trying-to-be-cool, and definitely-in-his-teen-feelings Changbin.

He sat on the porch steps, a game console in his hands, brows furrowed like he was defusing a bomb instead of building a pixelated castle. Every so often, he glanced toward the garden where Jeongin was sitting under a tree, reading a book and sipping something iced from a sparkly glass.

"Channie," Yongbok whispered to Chan, "Look. Binnie's trying not to look at Auntie Innie."

"He's failing," Chan whispered back.

Changbin's fingers paused on the buttons. He looked toward the kids suddenly. "Wanna play?"

They blinked. "You mean... with you?" Chan asked.

"Yup," Changbin said, scooting over and holding out the second controller.

The kids scrambled to sit beside him, excited. For the next fifteen minutes, they sat together building colorful towers and jumping through absurd in-game challenges. Every time they won a level, Changbin leaned in with a grin and high-fived them like it was a championship victory.

"You're so good at this," he told Chan. Chan beamed.

"Really?!"

"Binnie is fast," added Yongbok.

From across the yard, Jeongin closed her book and strolled over. "What are you guys doing?" asked the teen.

Changbin tried very hard not to throw the controller into space. "Playing," he said, suddenly nonchalant.

"Looks fun," Jeongin said, sitting beside them. "Got room for one more?"

"I mean... sure. If you don't mind losing," he muttered.

"Oh?" she raised an eyebrow, amused as the boy handed her the controller with trembling fingers.

"Press B to jump." Changbin began. "Press A to look cool. I don't make the rules."

Yongbok leaned into Chan again, whispering, "Binnie's showing Auntie Innie his best game. This is real."

Chan nodded solemnly. "He didn't even let me drive the glitter dragon."

They kept playing until the screen flashed 'Victory!' and everyone cheered.

Jeongin high-fived him. "Nice job, partner."

Changbin didn't smile. But his ears turned red, and his grip on the controller got weirdly tight.

Later, when the game was paused and the others went inside to get juice, Yongbok and Chan stayed behind with him.

"You always like spending time with us?" Chan asked.

"I mean... yeah," Changbin said, shrugging.

"Even when we're annoying?" Yongbok grinned.

He smirked. "Especially when you're annoying."

Chan tilted his head. "So your love language is... playing games?"

"Not just games," Changbin replied, glancing toward the garden where Jeongin had gone back to reading. "It's... when people show up. Hang out. Don't ditch you even when you suck at explaining things."

Yongbok and Chan looked at each other. "Quality time," the little boy said confidently.

"Oh," Changbin said, pretending not to care. "Yeah, well. Maybe."

Yongbok poked his arm. "You're good at it."

And for a second - just a second - Changbin smiled like someone had quietly told him he mattered.

Rain was tapping gently on the windows, turning the world outside into a misty watercolor. Inside, the Chan's playroom lights were dimmed, the couch blanketed with pillows, and the projector screen flickered with the soft glow of a paused video.

"Okay, okay - press play!" Yongbok bounced beside Chan on the beanbag, blanket curled around her legs. "Grandmama said this vlog was just for Bokkie and Channie!"

Jisung handed them bowls of popcorn and smiled, while Seungmin set up the video on the projector. The file name read: 'To our sparkling prince and princess - Alps Edition'.

The screen came alive. There they were - Grandpa Felix, in his usual stylish scarf and glowing smile, holding the camera. And Grandma Jeongin, elegant even in a ski jacket, waving from beside a snowy chalet.

"Hellooo, my darlings!" Jeongin beamed. "Guess where we are!"

"Still lost in Switzerland," Felix added dramatically. "But fear not - we've located the best hot chocolate in the country."

"And I got a chick-shaped cookie just for you, Yongbok!" Grandma Jeongin said, holding up the snack to the camera. "It even has sunglasses."

Yongbok gasped. "IT LOOKS LIKE BOKKIE!!"

Chan giggled and pointed. "That hot chocolate is bigger than Grandpa's face!"

Jeongin, now sitting on a wooden bench, smiled, snowflakes landing in her hair. She looked straight into the camera. "We saw twin icicles today hanging from a tree. And we both said - those are for the twins coming soon."

Felix chimed in, his tone gentler. "We may be far away, but we think about you every day. About all of you."

Jeongin leaned into him. "And every souvenir, every picture, every weird goat we pet - it’s for you. We always think of you. Even when we're not right beside you."

"We bought a lot of gifts and toys." Felix smiled, bright. "I took time selecting each. For all of you and the new little ones on the way."

The video ended with them waving in front of the Alps, yelling, "We love you! Be sparkly! Be good! Eat vegetables!"

The screen faded to black.

Yongbok and Chan just sat there for a moment, eyes wide, popcorn forgotten.

"They remembered the twins," Yongbok whispered.

"And chicks," Chan added softly.

"And me," she said again.

Jisung sat beside them, pulling them into a side hug. "That's their love. It's never-ending."

Chan whispered, "Their love language is... remembering... and giving a lot of gifts."

"Remembering and sharing," Yongbok said. "With sparkles."

Seungmin smiled. "You could say... gift-giving and words of affirmation."

Yongbok grinned. "Bokkie loves grandmama and grandpapa's sparkly love."

Chan nodded. "Let's send them a reply vlog!"

"Oh yes!" Yongbok clapped. "With Channie's wolves and Bokkie's chicks."

"And snow drawings."

"And ninja flips!"

Seungmin chuckled, looking at his brother. The kids were already halfway to the craft corner, tripping over blankets, hearts full of a kind of love that came through a screen - but still felt just right.

✨"Love is Remembering."
(Grandpa Felix- Gift Giving.)

The rain hadn't stopped all afternoon. It drummed softly on the windows and turned the garden outside into puddled wonder. Inside, the house was a little quieter now, everyone curled into their own corners after dinner.

Hyunjin was busy finishing a pastel sketch - smooth gentle swirls of a sunset garden she'd seen in Switzerland once.

Yongbok stood beside her, holding a crayon.

She had tried. Tried to draw a flower like Hyunjin's, tried to blend orange with pink like she'd seen her do, but all she got were wobbly lines and smudges. Her paper was wrinkled. Her fingers stained. Her eyes were hot.

"Bokkie can't do it like Auntie Honey," she said, her voice small.

Hyunjin looked up, surprised. "Bokkie-" Yongbok quickly folded the paper in half and hid it under the placemat. Hyunjin stood, gently wiping her hands. "Sweetheart, you don't have to be like me—"

But Yongbok had already shuffled away, trying not to cry.

From across the room, Chan saw everything.

He didn't say anything. He didn't ask what was wrong. He just walked straight to her, arms already open like wings. And then he wrapped her in the biggest hug his little body could give. A warm, smushy, five-year-old cuddle.

Yongbok sniffled. "Bokkie drew ugly."

"No," Chan said firmly. "You drew flower dust. And flower dust is cool."

Her arms slowly reached around his back, holding onto him tightly. "Bokkie just... Bokkie wanted to show it to Auntie Honey. But it was all wiggly."

Chan rubbed small circles on her back, just like his mumma did when he was sick. "Wiggly flowers are the funniest ones," he said. "They dance. Like you."

Yongbok stayed there, nose pressed into his shoulder. "It feels good. Bokkie is okay."

Chan nodded against her. "It's called... big hug."

"Big hug?" She sniffled again. "I like Channie's love language."

"Me too," he whispered. "It makes my tummy warm."

From across the room, Hyunjin leaned into Jisung, watching the scene. "I think... he just found his."

Jisung smiled softly, looping an arm around her shoulder. "He's always been a hugger."

"I wonder if they'll remember this when they're older."

"They will," Jisung said. "Love taught young sticks like glue."

Later that night, when the house had gone quiet and rain became a lullaby, Yongbok lay on the couch with her crumpled flower picture tucked under her arm. Beside her, Chan had fallen asleep mid-cuddle, his small hand still resting protectively over hers. Their feet were tangled.

And hearts full.

And just like that - the fifth and final love language was learned not through words, gifts, or games... but through the gentle strength of one very big hug.
