Day 7: Anniversary

Notes:

Final one! I can't believe I managed to write one for every prompt. Even if they aren't very long I am actually really proud of myself, lmao. Hope you enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

For once, the suit he wears is black. His hair is still a bit damp from the shower he took earlier, and he clutches a bouquet of flowers to his chest. He walks along the desire path, trees standing tall all around him. The sun is setting in the distance, painting the sky in reds and oranges. It's quiet around him, only the occasional rustle of leaves as the wind sways the trees can be heard. He abandons the desire path and turns on to a gravel road, following it until he makes another turn onto the lawn. The grass is wet from an earlier rain shower, and water seeps through his shoes. He stops when he finally arrives at his destination.

He takes a breath. "Hi, Mr Edgeworth."

He puts the flowers down in front of his gravestone, then straightens.

"Miles was probably here earlier, since it's the anniversary of your death. I kind of hate that word. Anniversary. Feels too cheerful for this occasion. But what's another option? Death day feels too morbid, even if it's more accurate."

He puts his hands in his pocket and gazes out at the graveyard.

"You probably don't know who I am. My name is Phoenix Wright. I was friends with Miles when we were kids. I was the one with spiky hair, who cried a lot. I actually became a defense attorney because of Miles." He fishes out his attorney badge and shows it to the gravestone. "Your son was lost for a while there, Mr Edgeworth. He was tormented by false memories and guilt he shouldn't have carried in the first place. Someone took advantage of that and led him astray. But it's better now. Miles knows the truth about your death and the rightful person is behind bars. Your son has come a long way. He can still be a bit prickly. Like a porcupine. But he finally knows how to let people in. I am proud to say I am once of those people he let it."

He gets out a photo and unfolds it. It's of him, Trucy and Miles. Trucy is in the middle with Phoenix and Miles of either side of her, throwing up a peace sign and with a big smile on her face. He sets the photo down on the grave, propping it up against the bouquet.

"That's my family, Mr Edgeworth. My daughter Trucy and your son, Miles Edgeworth. They make me so damn happy. He makes me so damn happy. I didn't think I would ever love anyone after—" he brings a hand up to drag over his face. "But then, there he was." He laughs a bit. "You would've been so proud of him. He's a bit different from how he was as a kid. He's been through a lot. But he's so strong. I wouldn't have retaken the bar if it wasn't for him. I actually don't think I would've been able to get through those hellish seven years of disbarment if it wasn't for him. He helped me so much. With Trucy, Kristoph...He was my rock, Mr Edgeworth. And I love him so much."

He gets out a small ring box then.

"Miles used to say he didn't want to get married. But last I asked, it seemed like he'd changed his tune. He wants to get married. To me." He gnaws at his bottom lip. "I guess I'm here to ask for your blessing. Which now seems stupid. If I really wanted to do this properly I should've just asked Maya to channel you. But I can't right now, so...If you have any objections to me marrying your son, give me a sign."

Phoenix tips his head back to watch the sky. It's rapidly growing darker and the wind keeps rustling the trees. Two leaves fall off a branch and land on the grave, right at Phoenix's feet. The way they overlap each other makes it look like a heart. Phoenix smiles.

"I take it I have your blessing then?" He says, pocketing the ring box. "I promise you, Mr Edgeworth, I will make your son so happy. I will treasure him every day. I'm a bit of an idiot, so I can't promise I will never hurt him. But I will always apologize and try to make it up to him."

The wind gently caresses him. It feels like a hug. Like permission. Like a blessing.

"I will turn this day of grief to something worth celebrating. Because that's what he deserves." He takes one last look at Gregory Edgeworth's grave. "I'll come with him next time," he promises. "And when I do, we'll be husbands, and you can meet your grandchild too."

He brings his fingers up to his mouth and presses a kiss to the tips of them, before touching the gravestone.

"I'll see around, Mr Edgeworth."

Phoenix leaves then. Beyond the grave, Gregory Edgeworth smiles.

Notes:

In the first draft of this Phoenix was visiting his mother's grave, telling her all about his new husband, but I decided to change it! This felt more emotional in a way.
