It’s been 1 full year since guest and Matt had died in the war. They never came back. Daisy was left alone to take care of her and charlotte. He missed the man. And she loathed herself for letting him go. His body now ash and her memories of him now a blur.
Sitting on the bench that leaded to the war memorial. Daisy flicked her lighter a few times before it finally ignited.
She suddenly felt a familiar presence to the right side of her. Turning her head she saw molly.
“Those aren’t good for you. Especially if you’re taking care of a child.” Molly sat down in front of daisy with a slight smile on her face
“How’s it been daisy? We haven’t catched up in a while haven’t we. You don’t look so good. “ Molly looked at daisy with those patient eyes.. usually daisy would be the one doing that.
Daisy stared at molly for a while with a slightly irritated expression before sighing and extinguishing the cigarette.
“your right.. I feel a little disappointed in myself. But ever since my husband passed away I don’t think I’d be able to survive without it.”
Daisy turned her head away from molly. This was rather embarrassing. How would he feel now seeing her like this.. he wouldn’t care actually. He’d still love her.
Her vision blurred.. she was about to cry again. Daisy wrapped her arms around herself and looked down
“How have you.. I mean.. you were with him during it.. how does it not hurt. How do you make it go away.”
Daisy felt a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “I’ve experienced lost time and time again. This time is no different. I still miss him.”
Molly noticed Daisy looked like she was gonna cry harder. “I don’t wanna lie to you. You’ll never stop missing him Daisy.”
Molly wrapped her arms around Daisy. “But..—“ daisy cut Molly off. Her voice sounded sharp and on edge “You didn’t answer my question. How do you sound so fine during this. Did you even love him?”
Daisy realized what she just said and covered her mouth. Molly had a slightly surprised expression on her face. But she still looked gentle.
“I-im sorry.. I didn’t mean to say that.”
“I know, and to answer your question.. I did.. I loved that man with all of my heart..”
“The hurt never really went away for me.. I still feel nauseous just thinking how a year ago he was with me.. that dumb smile on his face. I distracted myself with other things.. but it didn’t work.. the only reason why Im this stable right now is because I’m helping you. I guess seeing someone go through the same thing I am right now doesn’t sit right with me. And seeing someone heal through what I’m going through.. it makes me feel better. Especially if it’s you Daisy. It hurts to see you hurt. I care about you.”
Molly realized she was rambling and turned her head away from Daisy. “Now look who’s the calm and level headed one—“
Daisy suddenly rested her head on mollys shoulder. “Thank you.”
And they sat there in silence. It was comforting. And maybe Molly was right. Maybe it would get better.
Maybe they would heal.
