Among the Shadows of the Forest

Summary:

Gojo Satoru has done a lot of stupid things in his life.
Taking home a cursed fox just because her eyes looked “too human” might top the list.

Except… she’s not a fox.
She’s not even a “she.”

And satoru is already in deeper than he thinks.

Notes:

Hello this is my first time posting a fanfic in my entire life :) and I'm happy to finally get this out of the drafts, making it clear here English is not my native language. And I used the translator to post it here, I hope someone reads it and likes it.

Chapter 1: — The Fox

Chapter Text

The forest smelled like rain, wet soil… and something else.
Something ancient. Watching.

Gojo adjusted his sunglasses, even under the dull, overcast sky. The mission was simple: track a faint cursed energy anomaly, file a report, and be out before lunch.

At least, that was the plan.

But there were no birds. No insects. Just the low whisper of leaves and a soft, almost imperceptible sound.
Breathing?

He moved silently between twisted roots and damp branches, senses sharp.

Then it hit him — a gentle scent of lavender.
Soft. Out of place.

Gojo froze.

His eyes narrowed.

Beneath a crooked tree, a small fox lay curled in the underbrush. Its silver-gray fur was tangled and stained with dried blood. One of its paws looked twisted, and its chest rose and fell in shallow, uneven breaths.

But it wasn’t the wounds that made him stop.
It was the eyes.

Amber. Wide. Afraid. Aware.

That wasn’t an animal’s gaze.
It was someone’s.

Gojo crouched slowly, keeping his posture low and open.

“Hey… easy, little one,” he murmured, voice soft and warm, the kind used with frightened children. “I’m not gonna hurt you.”

The fox didn’t run. But it didn’t approach either.
Its ears twitched. Its body trembled. And its eyes never left him.

Gojo tilted his head. She was still assessing him.
There was fear, yes. But something more. Curiosity? Recognition?

And something inside him stirred.

He was used to cursed spirits. To monsters. To broken people and twisted things.
But this small creature — bleeding, trembling, hiding like she had nowhere else to go — didn’t feel like a threat.

She felt… lost.

And somehow, that tightened something in his chest.

He reached out slowly, like snowfall.

“You smell like rain and magic,” he whispered, almost to himself. “And fear.”

That’s when it shifted.

A faint flicker of cursed energy — like a candle in the dark. Barely there, but clinging to her body like a second skin.

Gojo’s instincts lit up.

She wasn’t ordinary.
She was something else.
And beneath that cursed energy…

She smelled like an omega in distress.

What the hell was this creature?

He hesitated. He could leave.
Maybe he should.

But her eyes... there was something in them.

Something he didn’t understand.
But he felt it anyway — like a pull beneath his ribs.

He sighed, shrugging off his coat.

“I don’t know what you are... but you’re not dying here.”

He gently wrapped her trembling body in the fabric. She flinched — barely — but didn’t resist.
She was too warm. Feverish. Weak.

When he lifted her, she let out a small, broken sound.
Half-whimper.
Almost... human.

“…Yeah. Same,” he muttered under his breath.

---

As he walked back toward the road, the lavender scent grew stronger in the air — clinging to his coat, his skin, his breath.

Behind him, deep in the shadows of the forest, something moved.
Eyes watched.
He wasn’t the only one interested in that creature.
