Life Mate

Summary:

Kakashi Hatake has always fought to keep his wolf side buried. But one night, his instincts overpower him, and he marks Sakura Haruno.

Longing for her so fiercely that he can’t resist shifting into a wolf and visiting her under the cover of night, he finds himself being "cared for" by Sakura, unaware that the creature she tends to is, in fact, Kakashi himself.

Notes:

First of all, I changed the date because I edited the first chapter and made it longer. I also thought more about the structure of the story and realized I don’t want to make short chapters. So if you’ve read it before. The first chapter used to be around 600 words, but I’ve expanded it to about 2,000 words now. This is the word count I plan to maintain for the upcoming chapters.

It won’t be very long, around 10 chapters, maybe a little less or a little more.

Sorry for the edit! Sometimes my excitement to post gets ahead of me, and my stories aren’t always fully planned D:

Honestly, I'm not sure if updating the date is the best solution. If you think it's wrong, I'll revert to the old date.

Maybe it was better to leave the note and they'll realize it when I publish chapter 2... right?

I'm already regretting this; I don't like changing the date on purpose... Is it wrong or okay to do it in this case?

I've been thinking about this idea for months. I just wanted a wolf Kakashi. 🐺

Chapter Text

Beneath his usual calm and indifferent mask, Kakashi Hatake hid secrets that few could even imagine. One of them was his bond with wolves: an ancient and peculiar lineage that allowed him to transform into one of them, but only under certain conditions. Among them, his emotional state... and the full moon.

For years, he had kept that part of himself chained. The missions, the responsibilities, even the Icha Icha books helped distract his mind and keep the most primitive instincts at bay. But that night, everything collapsed.

The mission had been a disaster. He had lost blood, energy... and to his misfortune, his precious Icha Icha Paradise copy had been destroyed in combat. Just when he needed it most, on the eve of the full moon.

Without his distractions, without his usual self-control, the void began to grow within him, agitating with each heartbeat like a storm repressed for too long.

And, as if that weren't enough, the enemy's poison still ran through his veins: a mixture of aphrodisiacs and sensory stimulants designed to break the resolve of any shinobi. Kakashi resisted... until he could no longer.

That night, under the silver light of the full moon, his will gave way.

The transformation was abrupt. Painful. His body broke and reconfigured in a matter of seconds. His mind clouded; the man's consciousness receded, and the wolf emerged. It was not just a physical transformation; something more roared within him. It was an ancient need, an impulse that dominated him completely.

He needed a mate.

···

He prowled through the bushes, his silver fur stained with blood. He panted with each breath, the pain in his side further clouding his senses. He couldn't summon his dogs in that form, he could only wait: wait for the poison to lose its strength, wait to regain control... wait for the desire to seek his mate to calm down.

He didn't expect someone to find him.

And much less that they would touch him.

"Easy... I won't hurt you," whispered a familiar voice, tinged with concern, though her tone betrayed a thread of caution.

The wolf opened its eyes slightly. Sakura.

His former student knelt next to him. Her chakra activated in her palms, green and vibrant, as she placed them on his injured side.

She didn't seem to recognize him. She only worked quickly, focused on stopping the bleeding, ignoring the low growl.

Kakashi let himself be healed. The warmth of the chakra numbed the pain, but not the other burning, the one that was born at the base of his chest and pushed him towards her. Her presence was more destabilizing than the poison.

When she finished, Sakura stood up, sighing with relief. She remained silent. She was about to leave.

He couldn't let her go.

An instinct stronger than reason propelled him. With a muffled growl, he leapt to his feet, pushing her with the weight of his body. His muzzle brushed the skin of her neck; the scent of Sakura enveloped him.

Unable to stop his wolf side, he pressed his fangs against her neck. Not enough to hurt her, but enough to mark her. He had chosen her as his mate.

The wolf roared, but a spark of consciousness still reminded him of what he shouldn't do. But he had already done it.

There was no time for more: a chakra-infused punch hit him full force. He flew between the trees, crashing to the ground with a muffled whimper. Before losing consciousness, he could only think of her... of Sakura Haruno, and the mark that now united them, for better or for worse.

···

Days passed, and Kakashi was increasingly sure he didn't want a mate.

For him, this was for the worse. Absolutely worse.

He had made solitude a refuge, not a curse, but the mark burned under his skin, reminding him that he had someone. His instinct demanded closeness, but his will refused. He tried to cling to the idea that he could still resist.

However, the pain hit him like a claw, and every day that passed away from Sakura, a void grew in his chest, he could feel how his body began to yield, how the transformation filtered softly and monstrously through his veins, although he tried to keep his distance, the connection made it impossible.

His wolf side claimed him, along with the desire to see her, to have her near, to touch her.

He tried to distract himself with missions, reports, training, the Icha Icha, but the connection was an invisible thread tied to his heart. It pulled, throbbed, demanded.

And then he felt it again, stronger. There were no aphrodisiacs or moon; only the desire of his mate that he could no longer contain.

He dug his nails into the fabric of his pants, but soon found himself arching his back, panting. His hands were trembling, the fingers stretching, the nails creaking.

"No... not now..." he muttered.

But it was useless. The transformation came like an overwhelming wave.

Where a man had been, now there was a wolf with silver-gray fur and shining black eyes.

Without thinking, he crossed rooftops and alleys, ignoring the civilians. There was only one destination: Sakura. His reasoning had disappeared; he only followed the scent that would lead him to her.

And he found her.

In the same forest where she had found him before.

She looked at him cautiously, seeming to recognize him probably by his scar in his eye. She seemed prepared for any attack, but the wolf Kakashi would never hurt her, and so Kakashi took a slow step towards her, his ears back and his head bowed. His breathing was still labored, his muscles tense from the transformation, but his movements were careful.

He didn't growl, nor did he bare his teeth. He just approached slowly, letting the silence speak for him to show that he was not a threat, he just wanted to be by her side.

Sakura did not retreat, but her hand slid towards her pouch, where she probably kept a kunai, being alert.

The wolf brushed against her leg to leave his scent there.

Sakura didn't move. She didn't speak. But something in her expression softened.

"You're the wolf from that time..." she murmured with a mix of unease and unexpected tenderness. "Or are you a really big dog?"

Her fingers brushed his fur. A single caress, brief but trembling. Kakashi closed his eyes for a moment enjoying her touch.

"I'm glad you're okay," she said with a small smile. "Take care."

Kakashi watched her disappear between the trees.

He took a step.

He wanted to follow her, but something in his lack of self-control prevented him.

The tug in his chest still hurt, but there was calm in him because he had seen her, and felt her touch.

Then, when her chakra was far enough away, he turned and ran back to the village. The impulse devoured him, the transformation did not subside, the instinct still roared beneath his skin. He traversed the same path quickly, invisible among the shadows, until he reached his apartment.

He lay on the floor of his home and there, finally, his body began to tremble. A low moan filled the room as the wolf became a man once again.

Naked, exhausted, kneeling in the gloom, Kakashi slowly fell asleep with Sakura's scent impregnated in his being, and that was enough.

...

Weeks had passed, and that feeling was worse. Day after day, that feeling intensified, like an insatiable longing after having tasted what it was like to be with her.

"No. You're not going," he said again with fierce determination, sitting in the dimness of his house, his knuckles white from the pressure. But his body did not obey him. His senses were no longer human. His sense of smell was already looking for her. His ears already recognized her voice even if she didn't speak. And his chest... his chest ached just thinking of not seeing her.

Not even the rain that lashed outside could stop him.

He tried to resist, but he was already on his feet. He was already trembling. He already felt the fur growing. And then, he was no longer the same.

He ran without thinking towards Sakura's direction. When he arrived, his heart was no longer that of a man, it was the heart of a wolf hungry for her.

The longing was unbearable for his wolf side.

He wanted all of her.

He wanted to feel her breathe.

Stay by her side.

He wanted her to be his.

The wolf approached and stopped in front of the window, as the rain soaked him, she was probably sleeping, but even so he tapped with his paw several times and howled, then sat there. The glass separated them, just a few inches. And yet, it seemed a world. He just wanted her to let him in.

But he knew he couldn't force that moment. So he waited. And when the curtain moved just barely, when the soft light of the lamp filtered through the glass, they looked at each other.

They were filled with surprise.

But even so, the window opened just enough for his wolf body to slip inside the room.

Did she let him in because of the water that drenched him? Or because, in some way, she desired him as much as he desired her?

Without an answer, he entered her territory, which was filled with her scent. His muzzle explored the fragrance that enveloped her when a towel brushed his damp fur.

"You're all wet," she said, frowning slightly, as her hands gently rubbed the fur until it was almost dry.

When she finished, Sakura reached out to his face. The wolf leaned his head against her, seeking more contact, more closeness.

"Don't you have an owner?" she murmured, in a warm and curious tone. "Or are you lost?"

Without waiting for an answer, and ending that contact that Kakashi in no way wanted, she moved away and opened the refrigerator. Shortly after, she placed a small piece of raw meat in front of his muzzle.

"Are you hungry?" she asked gently.

Kakashi averted his gaze from the plate and fixed it on her. It was not hunger for food; it was hunger for her. Restraining himself seemed impossible. His instinct screamed to pounce on her, to possess her, to mark her again.

But his human side stopped him. He closed his eyes, breathing deeply, trapped between containment and impulse.

He could hear her sigh.

"I don't think it'll stop raining all night," Sakura whispered softly. "You can stay... but don't break anything!" she warned, showing her fist.

She arranged pillows and a blanket on the floor, improvising a bed before retiring to her own room.

...

Sakura fell asleep, and Kakashi remained in a corner, breathing with difficulty. He tried to control the impulse that consumed him from within. His wolf roared silently, wanting to make him lose control, with her so close.

Finally, the resistance gave way. He approached her room, and opened the door, and climbed onto the bed, positioning himself over her. Every beat of her heart reminded him of what he wanted: to possess her, to reinforce the bond that united them.

But Kakashi must not.

Seconds passed, and the transformation ended. His body returned to human form, naked and trembling, but the desire that yearned for her remained intact.

He leaned over her, measuring each movement, feeling how her warmth and her scent enveloped him completely. Every breath, every sigh of Sakura dragged him closer, and yet, the fear of what he could do to her kept him on the verge of self-control and total surrender.

Sakura slept, unaware of who was really over her. The rain gently hit the windows, muffling the sound of his racing heart. And he... he couldn't look away or ignore the desire that consumed him.

What he wanted to do to her.

But, above all... what he could do to her.
