Chapter Text
The shift came softly, like dawn breaking, quiet, gradual, but impossible to ignore.
It began with a warmth in his chest, a strange fluttering in his core, and then the scent. A delicate sweetness unfurled in the air, like spring flowers caught in sunlight, soft, airy, and sweetly submissive. It clung to the curtains and drifted through the small, sunlit room like a whispered secret.
Taehyung, barely eighteen and still more fawn than man, sat curled up on his window seat, long legs tucked beneath him, a book trembling in his pale hands. The walls of his room, painted soft cream, dotted with sketches and dried flowers, blurred at the edges as his vision swam. He dropped the book.
His breath hitched. His skin prickled.
It was happening.
He whimpered softly, curling tighter into himself as his presentation bloomed to life. His scent, once subtle, now spilled freely from him, pure omega, rich and painfully sweet. Taehyung clutched the edge of the cushion beneath him, his body trembling as unfamiliar waves of warmth rolled through his limbs. His small frame felt heavy, his senses too sharp, his thoughts fluttering like fragile wings.
Across the hallway, Namjoon stiffened.
He had just stepped out of the shower, towel slung over his shoulders, when the scent hit him, a rush of warm honey and something so delicately innocent it made his heart lurch.
"Seokjin!" he called, already halfway down the hallway. “It’s Tae!”
Both he and his mate burst into Taehyung’s room, worry etched into their features.
Taehyung was curled up against the pillows, cheeks flushed, lips parted, hair clinging to his damp forehead. The moment he looked up at them, big brown eyes glassy and dazed, Namjoon’s breath caught in his throat.
“He presented,” Seokjin whispered, stepping forward slowly, carefully. “He’s an omega.”
Namjoon knelt beside the bed. “Tae, sweetheart,” he murmured, brushing a trembling hand along his baby brother’s cheek. “It’s okay. I’ve got you.”
“I feel strange,” Taehyung whispered. “Everything’s… loud.”
“I know,” Namjoon said, voice soft. “It’ll pass. You’re safe, okay? You’re safe here.”
As Seokjin gently tucked the blankets around Taehyung, his touch soft and voice even softer with murmured reassurances, a hush began to settle outside the hut. The shift was subtle at first, birds stilling mid-chirp, the wind catching its breath but Namjoon felt it instantly. A deep, instinctual thrum in his chest answered the silence, the air thickening with something primal and magnetic.
The head alpha’s eyes narrowed as he slowly stood, his gaze locking with Seokjin’s.
“He’s close,” Namjoon said quietly, already knowing.
Seokjin stilled, then nodded, a knowing glimmer in his eyes.
The bond had been awakened. It reached out like a pulse through the forest, calling, beckoning.
And someone, some alpha, was answering.
Namjoon’s jaw tightened, not in resistance, but in quiet acceptance.
“It looks like,” he murmured, “my baby brother has found his mate.”
A sharp breeze rolled in through the open window, rustling the sheer curtains and with it came the unmistakable ripple of Alpha energy.
Far beyond the tree line, from the heart of the pack’s training grounds, a powerful growl split the air. It was low, primal, an instinctual sound that rolled like thunder. And then, footsteps. Heavy. Controlled. Coming fast.
Jungkook.
The head alpha of the Jeon Pack stood just outside the front door of Namjoon’s house, his figure tall and commanding, half-shadowed by the amber spill of twilight. The breeze danced through his black coat, stirring the dark strands of hair that fell across his forehead, but his body was perfectly still, coiled, precise, straining against invisible reins.
He had felt it before he even scented it.
That gentle, devastating tug deep in his gut, the call of a bond that existed before time itself. His omega. Somewhere close, vulnerable, sweet, and newly bloomed. When the scent reached him, syrupy with purity and submission, honeyed with innocence, his instincts surged to the surface like a roaring tide. He had followed it without thought, driven by something more ancient than reason.
But when he reached the porch steps, Namjoon was already there, blocking the doorway with a firm stance and guarded eyes.
“You can’t come in,” Namjoon said, voice calm but edged with steel. “He’s still presenting.”
Jungkook’s jaw tightened. His pupils were dilated, every breath a struggle between dominance and restraint. “I don’t want to touch him. I just… I need to be here, to see my mate, Namjoon hyung.”
“I know,” Namjoon replied after a long beat. “Believe me, I do. But he's not ready yet. His body is still changing. The scent is pulling too strong. You're an alpha, Jungkook. The head alpha. You stepping inside right now… that’s not safe for him.”
Jungkook didn’t argue. He stood there, fists clenched at his sides, his broad shoulders rising and falling in heavy, restrained breaths. His gaze was locked on the threshold as if he could see straight through the wood and walls and into the small bedroom where his mate lay trembling.
Seokjin emerged next, the door slipping open just enough for him to pass through. His face was composed but his eyes were weary, touched with worry.
“He’s in heat-like symptoms, but it’s still early,” Seokjin said quietly, standing beside Namjoon. “His scent is… strong. Overwhelming, even to me. You being inside right now would only make things worse.”
“I would never hurt him,” Jungkook said, and though his voice was low, it held an unshakable truth. “You both know me. I’ve waited my whole life for this.”
“We know,” Seokjin replied, his gaze softening. “But he's fragile, Jungkook. His body doesn't even know how to process this yet. We can’t risk instinct overtaking care—not yours, not his.”
Jungkook lowered his head slightly, jaw ticking. “How is he?”
Seokjin smiled faintly, though it was laced with protectiveness. “Scared. Confused. But… he’s beautiful, Jungkook. So ethereal. His scent is pure and untouched. He’s trembling like a leaf but he’s strong. And his scent is forming.”
Jungkook exhaled slowly, like he was holding back a growl. “I knew the moment I smelled him,” he murmured. “I’ve never felt something so… right.”
Namjoon studied him for a long moment, then gave a short nod. “Then wait. Let him finish this safely. Seokjin will stay with him until it’s done. When he’s settled, you can talk to him. But not before.”
Jungkook didn’t argue. He stepped back from the door, just once, and stood on the porch in silence. As the wind curled around him again, it carried that sweet, soft scent of omega, his omega, fluttering through the night like an invitation he had to resist.
Inside the hut, Seokjin returned to Taehyung’s room. The boy was curled beneath a soft blanket, flushed and shivering, the air around him thick with sweetness and submission. His cheeks were damp from silent tears, his hands clutching the edge of his pillow.
Taehyung stirred beneath the blankets, the delicate line of his brow creased as another wave of warmth rolled through him. His senses were a blur, everything felt far too bright, too loud, and yet, beneath the dizziness, there was something else.
A scent.
It cut through the haze like a ribbon of firelight in fog, deep, woodsy, powerful, threaded with something darkly sweet and heady. His breath caught in his throat as the scent wrapped around his senses, divine, overwhelming in a way that made his skin prickle and his heart race. His body reacted before his mind could catch up.
Something deep inside him whispered—no, screamed—mate.
But it was distant. Foggy. Like a voice underwater. He didn’t understand it, not yet. His thoughts were too soft, too scattered. The heat clouded everything.
He let out a soft sound, something between a sigh and a whimper. “Someone’s here,” he murmured, his voice barely more than a breath. “He smells like… like…”
He trailed off, pupils dilated, lips parted in confusion as he blinked toward the ceiling.
Seokjin, seated at his bedside with a cool cloth pressed gently to his forehead, gave him a fond, soothing smile. His hand never stopped its slow motion, brushing through Taehyung’s damp hair with care only an older brother figure could give.
“Yes, love,” Seokjin said softly. “There’s someone outside.”
Taehyung blinked again, dazed. “He smells… I don’t know. It hurts, but I like it. I feel… warm.”
Seokjin leaned down, his voice just above a whisper, meant only for Taehyung. “That scent you're drawn to—that’s Jungkook.”
Taehyung's breath hitched at the name, lashes fluttering. The fog didn’t lift, but something inside him clenched, pulsed, recognized.
Seokjin continued, voice tender, careful. “He’s your fated one, Taehyung. Your mate. That pull you feel? That ache? It’s your bond starting to awaken.”
Taehyung whimpered again, curling slightly under the sheets. His body didn’t fully understand it yet, but his instincts clung to that name, that scent, like a thread in the dark.
And outside the walls, just beyond reach, Jungkook waited. Silent. Still. Drawn to the boy he couldn’t yet touch but already his.
